Why does Aussie TV suck?

Why does Aussie TV suck?
Oh face it, you’re all thinking it. It’s like when you go to the video store, and you look for a movie to hire. As soon as you see that it’s Australian, you automatically toss it back. It’s just second nature. That’s not to say there aren’t some fantastic Aussie films out there, but there’s such a stigma attached to them that we rarely give them a chance.
TV is pretty much the same. In the last few years we have had little to no good quality Aussie TV. The networks are required to air a certain amount of home-grown stuff, and they’re filling up their quota with crappy reality shows like The Biggest Loser and What-not-to-whatever. What happened to programs like The Secret Life of Us and Always Greener? Blue Heelers was recently cancelled. Teen drama Headland was shut down as soon as it started. The only real dramas that currently spring to mind are McLeod’s Daughters and All Saints, and soaps like Neighbours and Home and Away.
So what happened?
After the House season finale this week, the new Aussie show Tripping Over will commence on channel 10. So let me ask you this - does the fact that is it Australian automatically mean that you won’t watch it? Or will you give it a shot?
It stars some of our top actors, including Lisa McCune, Brooke Satchwell, Rebecca Gibney and Daniel MacPherson, and is from the creators of SeaChange and Cold Feet. According to ninemsn: “Tripping Over is set in London and Sydney and explores lives in transition. Five young people - three from London, two from Sydney - go on a path of discovery and converge for a one night stop-over in Bangkok. Their safety nets are stripped as they realise that death is capricious and life is an opportunity to be seized.”
Is this the start of a new era of Australian television? Or will it rate badly and slip into oblivion like everything else these days?
