Veronica Mars - Charlie Don't Surf
October 25th 2006 11:18
This episode felt waaaay more on track than last week did. More in tune with the dark angsty stuff this show is known for.
The fraternity accused of the serial rapes occurring on campus come to Veronica for help to clear their name, and this request comes in the form of Dick (sparking the most hilarious scene by far in the episode.) I love Ryan Hanson and Kristen Bell when they have their mini snark fests. “Go work your little pixy spy magic and fix this!”
Anyhow, Veronica agrees, thinking it will give her the opportunity to pinpoint the true perpetrator. I like that the discovery of her own rape last year is driving her forward on the case this year, though I would have preferred to see how she was dealing with that discovery a little better. Considering how dramatic and heart wrenching the season finale was, they’ve done very little to follow up on it, and it’s a little disappointing so far.
In non-college land, a woman comes to Keith asking him to find out if her husband is being unfaithful, and that woman is none other than Laura San Giacomo, reuniting Enrico Colanatoni with his old Just Shoot Me cast mate. They start to get a little close and bond over the case along the way, and as her episode arc isn’t over yet, I’m sensing romance on the horizon for Veronica’s old dad.
Logan, worried that his trust fund is being eaten into by employees of his late father, enlists Veronica’s help to find out where the money is leaking, and discovers he has a secret half-brother. Considering Aaran’s track record in all things seedy, this isn’t exactly a surprise. Logan and his new brother Charlie- played by Gilmore Girl’s own Logan, Matt Czruchry- play catch up, waxing nostalgic over Logan's stellar celebrity upbringing, including a hilarious little story about Trina (Alyson Hannigan's character) shooting Nicole Ritchie with a BB gun. HAHA. I love Rob Thomas. But Logan's happiness is shortlived when Charlie turns out to be a reporter for Vanity Fair chasing a story, which Veronica only discovers after Logan has spilled his guys to the guy. What an ASSHOLE. Like Logan hasn't had enough people using him already. Veronica of course, feels guilty for being her and looking into it. These kids just can't catch a break, can they?
I’m glad they took the time to rehash Logan's abusive childhood, which is always good continuity. The guy comes from some pretty crappy parents, and it’s nice to see they’re not forgetting it. Jason Dohring’s portrayal of Logan is heartbreaking as usual (seriously, someone just give the guy an award already)
It’s also good to see Logan and Veronica lasting this long in a relationship. I still think it’s a shame that so many other supporting characters are taking a backseat to the current storylines though. Wallace, for example, had a pathetic five second scene, and Mac, Weevil and Lamb weren’t even in the episode at all. I guess that’s the downside of having such a big cast.
But yes yes yes, Veronica Mars is still kicking ass. Always a good thing.
