The X-files: I Want to Believe...It's HERE!

July 28th 2008 00:29
First off, I just want to say a huge thank you to Paula for taking over while I was gone! You did a great job Paula!

That being said, this is the post that I was both looking forward to and dreading the most. I have seen The X-files: I Want to Believe, but where do I even begin?

Hi my name is Meggie and I’m a die-hard X-phile…Okay, wait, maybe that’s a little too far back. If you’ve been around here in the last year you’ve notice that it’s no secret that I am a fan of The X-files for a very very long time. It’s crazy to think that I’ve known Mulder and Scully longer than most of my real life friends, and I don’t deny naming my first laptop “Queequeg” (or the fact that I dissolved into a fit of ridiculous grinning when I typed in “Queequeg” just now and Wikipedia first listed “Queequeg was the name of Special Agent Dana Scully's dog on The X-Files” before mentioning the legendary Moby Dick harpooner.)

I don’t deny arranging my junior high and high school schedules so that I wouldn’t miss an episode, and THE Poster is still hanging on my wall. I watched reruns of the show consistently throughout those hard college project nights, and just when I finally was about to give up hope on another movie…I graduated from college, and *gasp!* the rumors are true! It’s FINALLY happening!

Thus began my year of The X-files. I won’t go into the details (I mean most of you were here yourself right?), but all I can say is I am one happy phile right now.

I should never have seen the movie on vacation, because I missed most of the trip thinking “I can’t wait, Mulder and Scully, I can’t wait, Mulder and Scully, Ican’twait!” and then, “Ahhhhh! I can’t believe I just saw it, Mulder and Scully, I can’t believe that happened, Mulder and Scully, Mulder and Scully…” LoL

Honestly though? The shock of seeing my favorite characters back on (in this case the big) screen was almost overwhelming. It was so different yet so the same. I don’t really know how to explain it. I mean, (rollover for spoiler warning) Mulder and Scully are finally a couple! And Chris Carter wrote it that way! *insert sounds of X-philes falling off their movie theater seats as their jaws hit the floor*

There are times when my brain literally just went “poof!” into nothingness because I couldn’t believe what I was seeing…or hearing! I’m sure you all know the parts I’m talking about…

****SPOILER WARNING**** Do not read this part if you don’t want to be spoiled. If you do, highlight below...

-“Scratchy beard”

-“ I have a little something to help with that”
“A little something?”
“Thank you.”

-Scully actually admitting out loud that she fell in love with Mulder?? Yeah, that was a fall-out-of-the-chair moment.

-Skinner!!!! Got all teary-eyed when he told her that they would find Mulder (definite teary-Scully “We will find him” flashback for me there) And I loved the ‘we know Mulder’ conversation in the car-totally made me laugh. And when Skinner went out to help Mulder?? Awwwww! Laughed again when Mulder realizes it’s him and is like, Skinner? What are you doing here? LoL

-The Kiss. Enough said. Oh wait, I do have one thing to add...curse you CC and your tricky camera work! I love the back of Mulder's head and all, but I love the front even more.

-The rowboat!! Oh man this was the best. It left me ridiculously happy after so much angst. Mulder and Scully finally get a happy ending? On vacation? In their swimming suits?? Are you sure CC wrote this? LoL

****End of major spoilers****

Every scene in this movie from beginning to end with Mulder and Scully is amazing. The depth of history these characters and actors have with each other is something that can never be duplicated. It’s so touching and beautiful and heartbreaking and funny all at the same time.

And it’s nice to finally have a movie that is character driven. No need for blow-out-your-ears explosions every five seconds and complicated monsters that take up half the budget in CGI. This movie is about real people and real feelings in a situation that could definitely happen in real life. As Chris Carter has said before, something is only as scary as it is believable, and he’s stuck to his guns on this one. From the second you start watching, with the music and the great left-hand corner titles, you think, “Oh yeah, this is The X-files.”

You don’t need to be a fan of the show to get the movie. My aunt who has never seen the show before went with me and said she liked it, so there you go. It’s not all just a ploy to get you in the theater, you can trust the filmmakers on that one. That being said, if you’ve never seen Mulder and Scully before this movie, go, GO NOW and buy the DVDs because you NEED to see them as they were for 9 seasons to fully bask in the wonderful-ness that is Mulder and Scully.

Hard core fans, fear not, there are plenty of great nods back to the show. The sunflower seeds? The Poster? The pencils in the ceiling really made me smile. Mulder and Scully banter like they always did, and although they go through a lot of angst in this movie, who can blame them? Would you be all happy-go-lucky if you’d been through all they’ve been through?

Now I know you’ll be totally distracted by Mulder and Scully (I know I was!), but if you can manage to tear your eyes away from them for a few seconds you’ll catch lots of X-files cameos. Chris himself is reportedly sitting in the hospital (totally missed it myself, will look for it next time), and the actress who played none other than Samantha Mulder has a cameo as an FBI Agent who makes eye contact with Mulder while walking down the hall. If you like Bad Blood as much as Gillian Anderson (and me) you’ll recognize the woman playing the missing FBI Agent, and that doctor sure looks familiar…as does that big black poodle walking the halls.

Sure I kind of missed having them in the FBI (I mean what’s an X-file without Mulder losing his gun right?) but all in all, I am very happy with this movie. After the shock of seeing it (and missing half the plot due to my distractions…hehe) I was kind of depressed. Not because the movie was bad (because it wasn’t!), but more because it was like the day after Christmas. Kind of that, “now what?” feeling. But over 24 hours I thought about the movie, listened to the soundtrack, thought about it some more, talked to fellow philes, and focused on that last scene and all the GREAT Mulder and Scully moments. And as I did, one big well of happiness seemed to bubble up and burst inside me and I haven’t stopped grinning since.

I just want to say a million times thank you to CC, FS, DD, and GA for giving us this amazing chance to see Mulder and Scully again. You guys worked so hard for so long to give us fans what we wanted, and we love you for it!

Oh and yes, David if you’re wondering, you all totally “Nailed it!”

Here’s to XF3...and 4…and 5…and that XF2½ Mulder and Scully’s Vacation…and…ahhh I love it.

PS-(spoiler warning, highlight )...All I can say is I am so glad Scully did not have to sew Mulder’s head back on. That poor man has been through enough! LoL And I'm still wondering...just who's in that helicopter at the end and do they have a camera with them?

YAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!! Oh man, I had some total post-XF2 -partum depression too!! Overall, I will say this: I very much enjoyed the movie. It wasn't the most amazing movie ever and there were some things I wish they would have done differently, but they did a damned good job. Chris' cameo was GREAT a la Alfred Hitchcock and (spoiler, please highlight) P.S. I apologize because this is going to be loooong... the bedroom/bathroom scene was FREAKING AWESOME!! Scratchy beard!! Lil' something? Thank you. HAHAHA. Oh Lord, and her finally saying that she loves him... SWOON!! They both did a fabulous job, as well as Billy Connolly and Mitch Pileggi. I felt Xzibit and Amanda Peet served their purpose-- how can you write much depth into those characters? The plot was freaky as all hell. Oh, and when I met Chris and Frank again at Comic Con I thanked them for the "easter egg" ending and said "I just want them to be happy!" And Frank said, "I know, because they've been through so much." I have to say, their relationship was more angsty than I expected it to me, and their conversation about William made me very sad for both of them. Albeit it was nice to hear Mulder talk about him. All that said, I was fairly disturbed by how jaded Mulder had become and how much Scully had evolved. I wish that there had been more banter between them, and OF COURSE, a little more lovin.' I'm going to see the movie again soon because (I really, really hate to admit this) I was slightly underwhelmed. I think it was because of all the build up and the spoilers. Paula, you know I love you, but I shouldn't have read your little tidbits. Oh well, there will be plenty of chances to watch it again, and again, and again!!! Bring on XF3: 2012!!! =) P.S. I didn't recognize the FBI Agent or the doctor/Samantha actress!! I need to bust out my DVDs. Oh, and was one of the other FBI people Gillian's stunt double-Mitch's wife??? Oh X-FILES I HEART THEE!!!!

Ahhh! Amy I totally felt the same way! (get ready for the spoiler highlights ) Throughout the whole thing I was like, wow that angst...this is so sad! I was not prepared for so much of it. I missed more of their usual banter and wished they weren't split up so much of the movie (as in location, her at the hospital, Mulder out running around in the snow). I missed them investigating together. I actually kind of missed their suits and guns too. LOL Through the darkest parts of the movie I remember thinking, why can’t they just have a scene together where they aren’t both so sad or fighting? That being said, I still laughed a lot despite all the darkness. I loved all the funny lines/parts, they were GREAT! And I love that Frank said that he wanted to give them some happiness after all they've been through. After the movie I spent an hour in a sort of 'that was so depressing' mood, and then I started thinking about it and focused on the happy parts and realized I really liked it…pretty soon I realized I didn’t just like it, I LOVED it! I went to see Mulder and Scully and that’s what I got. By that last scene they finally seemed to be back to normal again, and I’ve totally accepted that they needed to go through all that angst and darkness to get to the light happiness of the end. And that rowboat scene? Best ever!! I was so glad I didn’t know what it was ahead of time. Haha I really have to see it again because I missed so much the first time around…and then I have to see it again…and again…and , well you get the point.

ok, first of all ILTM!!!!!!! Very very much! I already had the chance to discuss it with Meggie, but what the hell... never enough talking about XF Spoiler warning! I absolutely adore the bedroom scene! That was my favourite in the whole movie! Better than the kiss which of course I loved a lot I loved the pencils (that was my flashback moment!) And Scully.... she was just awesome! Her love confession.... I had to watch that scene over and over again because I just couldn't believe it! I didn't like agent Whitney very much though When she called Mulder "Fox" I was like "WTF?" And when she fell my only comment was "bye bye" and a huge grin LOL Xzbit also wasn't my favourite, but I am so happy Skinner was there! When he said "Mulder wouldn't do anything crazy" and the look Scully gave him.... ahhhh hilarious

So... now I am gonna watch it again, and again and again and then probably some more.... and I'll be waiting for XF3!!!

Oh and Amy I love you too!!! LOL

Went to the movie again today. Caught "Samantha" and CC's cameo this time, and I dont' know how I could have possibly missed the fish in the bedroom the first time around! I appreciated the slower pace this time (the first time everything seemed to be spinning just because I was like, Ahhh! Mulder and Scully! LoL) and it reminded me of how they used to make really good thrillers. You know, before the whole 'everything has to be special FX, blood, sex, CGI and explosions' thing. And yes Paula (spoiler highlight)...I too silently yelled "you can't call him FOX!!" Both times. LoL Man I can't wait for the DVD...

PS-just found out from the "Supernatural" Comic Con panel that Mitch Pileggi is going to guest star this season as Sam and Dean's grandpa in a time-travelling episode! Awesome!

Yes, I saw that right after I posted here. LoL I knew that girl staring at Scully when she was yelling on the phone had to be someone important since we saw her for such a long time. Very cool. Loved all the cameos!

It's good to see a thoughtful movie that portrays outer limit possibilities in a very realistic way. This sounds like a certain tv show that gained a big cult following in the mid-90s but was never whole-heartedly accepted by the mainstream...

Welcome JThom! And yes, it does sound suspiciously familiar...

Regardless if you are a fan of the TV show or not, this movie is about one thing: Intelligence.

If you have been brainwashed into expecting all movies to be about CGI, explosions, or sex scenes, then you will be disappointed.

This movie requires thought, intelligence, and an understanding of common sense.

I realize most of our generation and the one below it do not have these abilities anymore, but if you think you can try, go see the film. Enjoy it.

If however you can not or will not try the above, help out other fans by buying a ticket for the X-Files and seeing something else once inside.

Thanks for stopping by Raskolnikov! I agree, to anyone who hasn't yet, SEE THE MOVIE!!
