The Office
October 10th 2006 10:53
The Office is probably the funniest comedy on TV right now. The only other recent comedy even in the same league is Arrested Development, and that was, of course, cancelled. So I feel pretty safe in making this declaration.
The humour is so cringeworthy you can’t help but laugh. The characters are so awkward you can’t help but fall in love with them. It’s made as a mockumentary, documenting the lives of those in a boring, everyday office workplace. Michael Scott is the manager of the Dunder-Mifflin Paper company, and annoys his employees to no end with his crazy antics. His completely weird ‘assistant to the regional manager’ Dwight Schrute is desperate for his approval, and will go to any lengths to get it. Pam Beesly and Jim Halpert are the only two normal people in the office, and mock their co-workers endlessly while hiding their own growing feelings for each other.
The US version has managed to prove its worth to fans of the UK original, walking away with an Emmy for best comedy series. The cast is made up of a variety of well known comedians and writers like Steve Carrell and Rainn Wilson, and half the dialogue is unscripted and improvised, only adding to the unique brand of hilarity. The cast even have their own myspace pages, where they regularly interact with fans! Channel 10 has just finished airing the second season (which is available on DVD with 2 hours of cut scenes and a 17 minute long blooper reel) in some disappointingly late timeslot, and will hopefully start the third season sometime next year.
