Supernatural Malleus Maleficarum
February 1st 2008 05:05
Well I’ll never look at a “Book Club” quite the same again. This week Supernatural is FINALLY back with a slightly depressing, darker episode. A group of four women get together for “Book Club” each week, and use hexes to make their lives easier…pottery business blooming, lower mortgage, that kind of thing. It all seems to be going great until one of their fellow witches tries to get back at an ex (with a rather nasty maggot burger). Sam and Dean, who have been investigating the man’s wife’s murder (all her teeth suddenly fell out, causing her to choke on the blood), end up catching up to the guy’s car and quickly getting rid of the hex bag just in time. The witch who was trying to hex him ends up getting the tables turned on herself, and dies from suddenly slit wrists.
Sam and Dean show up at her house, where Dean backs into a bloody rabbit hanging from the ceiling. He reminds Sam just how much he really hates witches, and asks why a poor rabbit always has to wind up dead every time? They wind up talking to the dead woman’s friends, and decide that they’re definitely hiding something. Sam decides that the murdering witches have to be taken care of, and this surprises Dean. He starts to wonder why Sam is suddenly starting to be okay with killing people.
Ruby shows up, warns the boys to get out of town because there’s a demon there who wants to get them. Dean pulls out The Colt and Ruby warns Sam to stop his brother. Dean will have none of it, and fires just as Sam lunges at him and knocks The Colt off track. When they turn around, Ruby’s gone. Dean can’t believe that just happens.
Back at the hotel, Dean finally confronts his brother about his odd behavior, asking him why Sam stopped him from killing a demon. After all, that’s what they’re supposed to do. Demons want to kill them, they want to kill the demons. Sam asks Dean what he’s going to do, run after Ruby and kill her with the gun that she fixed for them? Dean says, yeah if that’s what it takes. When he asks Sam why he’s acting so weird, Sam begrudgingly admits that Dean’s going to be gone soon, and he’s going to be left alone in this fight. The way he sees it, if he’s going to win the war without his brother, he’s going to have to be more like him. Dean doesn’t like the idea of sweet little Sammy becoming more like him.
But before he can argue any more about it, Dean starts to cringe. When Sam asks what’s wrong, Dean realizes it’s way worse than a stomachache. He feels like there’s knives ripping apart his stomach! Suddenly he starts coughing up blood, and tells Sam to hurry up and look for the hex bag. Sam desperately rips apart the room, trying to find what’s killing his brother, but it’s no good.
As Dean lies dying on the floor, Sam grabs The Colt and bolts out the door. He floors the Impala and breaks down the door of the house where the witches’ book club is going on. He threatens to kill them all if they don’t stop hurting his brother, and they all jump up, hands in the air, insisting they have no idea what he’s talking about! He gives them five seconds before he shoots, and one of them finally stutters that they were just trying to lower one of their mortgages! This takes Sam by surprise.
Meanwhile, back at the hotel, Dean is still being tortured. Suddenly the door busts open and Ruby stomps in, grabs Dean, throws him on the bed, and forces some nasty looking black liquid into his mouth. Whatever it was it saves his life. However unhappy he is that it came from a demon, at least Dean’s glad he’s alive.
Sam studies the three women he’s holding at gunpoint, and finally targets the one who hasn’t been in the papers for sudden great luck. She finally drops the act and shows her true black-eyed self. Sam fires The Colt and is shocked when she stops the bullet in midair!
The other two women are terrified and appalled to find out that they’d ended up selling themselves to her! Tired of playing with them anymore, the demon girl smacks one of them handlessly, snapping her neck, and pins Sam to the wall as she moves on to the second.
Sam tells her she has him now, why not let the girl go? The demon laughs it off, telling him to wait his turn, and heads for the last girl, then changes her mind. She tells him that there’s another demon who wants to lead the fight in the war, and he doesn’t like Sam very much. She tells him it’s nothing personal, just good PR. She starts to press him into the wall with her powers, and just when Sam is about to be crushed to death, the door bursts open and Dean flies in. The demon girl pins him to the wall and smiles. “Two for one.”
She starts crushing both brothers into the wall, taking great pleasure in torturing them, until Ruby shows up. She tells her to stop, then slinks up and tells the other girl that she’s been trying to find her this whole time, that she wants to come back to her and that she led the Winchesters to her as a present. Dean mouths, ‘I told you so!’ to Sam and watches as Ruby continues to try and get back on the demon’s good side.
Suddenly she whips out her special knife, but the other demon is too fast. A fight ensues, in which she reveals to Sam and Dean that Ruby used to be human. That she sold herself to her when she became a witch. The last of the book club women finally snaps out of her shock and tries to put a hex on the demon trying to exorcise Ruby. It stops her long enough to distract her from killing Ruby, but ends in the last of the book club’s human deaths. The demon turns back to Ruby to finish the job, but Dean stabs her in the back repeatedly with Ruby’s knife.
He stares at Ruby wordlessly, then heads over to help Sam. Despite the fact that she saved his life, Dean clearly still hates her. She tells them to get out. They hesitate by the door, and she flips on the black eyes to make sure they leave. Dean pulls Sam out the door without a word.
Back at the hotel parking lot later on, the lights start flashing. Dean turns to find Ruby standing there. They stare at each other for a second, then Dean finally asks her what she’s doing there. She tells him that she needs his help getting Sam ready. Dean tells her that there’s not really a way to get him out of his deal is there? She admits that there’s not.
When Dean says, “So you used to be human?”, Ruby tells him that all the demons she’s ever met had been human once. Most of them forgot what it was like and became the horrible thing they are now. She tells him that one day the same thing will happen to Dean. She tells Dean that he needs to help her get Sam ready, to make him more like Dean before he dies. He’s going to need to be tougher if he’s going to win the war.
When Dean asks her why she wants them to win, she replies, “Isn’t it obvious? I’m not like them.” She disappears, leaving poor Dean to let this new horrible string of news sink in.
Quotes of the week:
Sam: This is Old World black magic Dean. I mean warts and all.
Dean: I hate witches. There always spewin’ their bodily fluids everywhere—it’s creepy! You know, it’s downright unsanitary!
~*~*~
*Dean’s slooking at the dead body and backs up into a dead rabbit hanging from the ceiling*
Dean: AH! Freakin’ witches, I mean seriously come on!
Sam: Guess we know where she got the rabbit’s teeth.
Dean: Paul sure knows how to pick ‘em, huh? It’s like Fatal Attraction all over again. *turns to look at the rabbit, angrily* And why does a rabbit always get screwed in the deal?! *sadly* Poor little guy.
~*~*~
Dean: *on the phone* I'd like to report a dead body. 309 Mayfair Cirle. My name? Sure my name is *hangs up*
