Networks unite to stand up to cancer

September 6th 2008 00:27

Tonight (Fri. Sept. 5), you may notice a slight change in your regularly scheduled programming. The stars are coming out to shed some light on a disease that kills 1,500 Americans every day—that's one person every minute— (and over 700 million people worldwide) through an international and commercial-free broadcast to raise money for cancer research.

Hosting the special will be CBS’s Katie Couric, ABC’s Charles Gibson, and NBC’s Brian Williams.

Said Couric on the event,
Television is a notoriously competitive business. For the three major broadcast networks to join forces is a wonderful example of the power of working together, and we’re very grateful to have the opportunity to reach people all over the country through this show.

Celebrity guests include Meryl Streep, Sally Field, Hilary Swank, Forest Whitaker, Charlize Theron, Jennifer Aniston, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Christina Applegate, Danica Patrick, Lance Armstrong, Elizabeth Edwards, Robin Roberts, America Ferrera, Salma Hayek, David Cook, Dana Delany, Abigail Breslin, Scarlett Johansson, Masi Oka, Marge and Homer Simpson, James Taylor, Dave Grusin, Josh Groban Melissa Etheridge, Halle Berry, Ellen DeGeneres, Jack Black, Jimmy Fallon, David Spade, Scarlett Johansson, and Jimmy Smits.

Included: Delany undergoes a mammogram; Couric and Breslin visit patients at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Contributors to the event include some big names: “Seinfeld” creator Larry David, Susan Sarandon, Keanu Reeves, Jodie Foster, skateboarder Tony Hawk, Morgan Freeman, model Christy Turlington Burns, Edward Norton, Ryan Seacrest, and the cast of “The Daily Show”.

The show will include live sessions by the performing artists, a phone bank of 50 celebrities taking contributions as it transpires, educational film pieces and "cutting edge" research presented by Couric, Gibson and Williams.

Stand Up to Cancer airs tonight on ABC, NBC, and CBS at 8/7c.
Fox, on the other hand, will still be airing the season premiere episode of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?
