Lost: This Place is Death Recap

March 5th 2009 02:32

While sitting in the car with Aaron, Sun gets a call from her daughter, asking when she’s coming home. She tells her she’ll be there soon, and that she’s found a friend for her in America.

Telling her daughter goodbye, Sun gets out and approaches Ben, gun drawn. Kate, Jack, and Sayid, all look at her shocked. What is she doing? Where’s Aaron? Sun tells Kate that Aaron’s in the car, and aims the gun at Ben.

She’s here to kill him because he killed Jin. Jin tells her that he didn’t kill Jin. Nobody did. Why? “Because Jin’s still alive. And I can prove it.”

~*~*~

On The Island, Jin is very confused to find himself with a young Rousseau and her shipwrecked French team. He looks around, wondering where his camp went. Behind him, one of the Frenchmen is listening to his radio. “8…15…16..23…42…”

Rousseau runs over to him to ask if he’s alright, and Jin asks, “You Rousseau? Danielle Rousseau?”

“Yes, that’s right.”

“Where you from?”

“We sailed from Tahiti.”

“When?”

“November 15.”

“No, what year?”

She looks at him confused, and answers, “1988.” Jin’s eyes widen and she asks, “Why?”

The rest of her party joins them, asking what’s wrong.

“I need…go find my camp,” Jin answers, trying to figure all this out.

Rousseau stops him. “What camp?”

“You were on this island before?” one of her friends asks, and Jin searches for the right words. “You…see helicopter?”

“First a boat, now a helicopter,” one of the Frenchmen replies in French. “Next think you know he’ll be talking about a submarine.” He looks at his friends. “Come on. I know which way to go.”

“Are you sure?”

“The signal is strong,” he replies, still speaking in French. Poor Jin just looks back and forth between them, having no idea what’s going on. “There must be an antenna on this Island. If we go there we can call for help.”

Jin starts to walk off, and the second man asks him in English if there is a radio tower on the island. When Jin just looks at him, he thinks. “Umm…okay.” He gets down and draws an antenna in the sand. “Like that. Is there a radio tower here?”

“Yes,” Jin answers, but that’s not what he’s looking for. “But I must find my camp because, maybe, uh, helicopter go there.”

Rousseau asks him if he knows where his camp is from here. No, he doesn’t. How about from the radio tower? Yes.

“Then go with us to the tower. Then we find your camp.”

Jin has no choice. “Okay.”

They get ready to move out. Jin watched one of the men kiss Rousseau’s forehead before she comes over to ask him, “Are you ready to go?”

“Yes.”

“Who are you hoping to find?”

“My wife.”

They start off into the jungle, and stop when Danielle suddenly gasps, grabbing her stomach.

“Danielle? What’s wrong?” the man who kissed her forehead asks. She insists it’s nothing, and tells her he knew this was a mistake. “You’re seven months pregnant—”

“Robert, I’m fine,” she answers in French. “She just gave me a little kick.”

“She?”

“She!”

He laughs. “How many times do we have to do this? Alexander is a boy.”

“Alexandra,” Rousseau answers with a grin. “it’s going to be a girl.”

“Uh-uh.”

“Si.”

Robert kisses her forehead again, and suggests they stop here to rest for a while. He asks his friend for some water for her, but he answers that Nadine has the canteen. Okay, but uh, where’s Nadine?

As they all start to look for her, Jin senses something is very wrong here. As the Frenchmen and Rousseau call for Nadine, he listens.

“That’s what happen when you bring women,” one of the men comments. “She’s probably off chasing a butterfly.”

They all listen. Nothing….then suddenly a low growl in the jungle. Everybody starts.

“Did you hear that?”

Jin is immediately alert.

“What is that?” one of the guys asks him.

Jin looks at him. “Monster.”

~*~*~

“Who saw Nadine last?”

“She was right behind me.”

They decide they need to look for her, but Jin insists, “No. We must go!”

“You shut up.”

Jin has no choice but to follow them as they call out for Nadine. Suddenly with a Black Smoke growl, dirt bursts up into the air. Nadine’s body falls to the jungle floor in front of them.

Jin: Run!

They all start to run, but the rude Frenchman gets caught by the black smoke.

It grabs him by the leg and starts dragging him into a deep hole. His friends and Jin all jump for him, forming a line, trying to pull him back. They hold onto him for a while, but the black smoke won’t give up.

They pull, it pulls, suddenly, the man’s arm snaps off.

They all stumble back, horrified. Suddenly, the man’s voice calls out to his friends for help. “I’m hurt!” Robert starts forward to enter the black hole, and Jin tries to stop him. Robert insists they don’t leave a man behind. The men start for the hole, and when Rousseau starts forward, Jin stops her. “No. You don’t go with baby.”

Good point. She stays behind with Jin, rifle in hand.

They stare at the strange hieroglyphics on the ruins the men just disappeared into. Suddenly the sky starts to light up and Jin grabs his head. Rousseau looks at him, confused. “What’s wrong?”

FLASH

Jin is now in a different time. The arm that he just saw ripped off a few seconds ago is still lying in front of him, but is very old. Making his way through the jungle, Jin finds a large leaf with some rainwater gathered on it. He takes a long drink, then finds his way back to the beach.

On the beach, he finds an old music box, still playing it’s tinkling tune. He notes the deserted camp and the horrible smell. He follows the smell, finding two of the Frenchmen dead. Suddenly, he hears Rousseau shouting at Robert that he’s not Robert. That the monster changed him somehow. Robert insists that that’s not true. As she holds him at gunpoint, he insists that he would never do anything to hurt her or their baby. As she lowers her rifle, he pulls another one out and fires.

*click*

The gun doesn’t fire. Rousseau takes the moment to shoot Robert. Suddenly she spots Jin. “You!”

“No—”

“You disappeared!”

“No, please, wait!”

“You’re sick too!”

“No!” Jin holds up his hands, trying to explain, but she doesn’t give him the time. She shoots, Jin runs. She continues to shoot as he rushes through the jungle. The white flash is back. In stutters in and out a moment, then FLASH. Jin’s face-down on the jungle floor. Rousseau and her gun are gone.

Jin gets up and a rifle cocks behind him.

“Turn around slowly.”

Jin turns around carefully, arms up. When he spots Sawyer, his eyes light up in surprise. Sawyer’s follow.

“Jin?”

“Sawyer?”

“Jin!” Dropping the aim on his gun, Sawyer lets out a very surprised laugh and rushes to grab his friend into a hug.

Jin laughs, hugging him back as Sawyer exclaims, “You’re kiddin’ me! I thought you were on that boat, I thought you were dead!”

“No, in…water,” Jin explains.

Finally some good news! Letting out another laugh, Sawyer grins, slapping Jin on the shoulder. “Well what do you say?”

Jin grins, his gaze travelling to Juliet and Locke. Suddenly his smile fades. Turning back to Sawyer, he asks, “Where is Sun?”

~*~*~

“Where’d that guy come from? I thought he was in the boat?” Miles asks, and Daniel tells him that the blast must have thrown him into the water. Jin’s been travelling through time just like all of them.

Sawyer is trying to explain to Jin that the flashes make them travel through time, but he’s not getting it. Frustrated, Jin stomps over to Charlotte. “Translate, please. Translate.”

“You heard the man,” Sawyer says, looking at Miles. “Translate!”

Miles just looks at him. “Uh, he’s Korean, I’m from Encino.”

Jin asks Charlotte something in Korean, and finally she translates, “He wants to know how you’re sure his wife is off The Island.”

Everyone looks at her in shock.

“You know Korean?” Saywer asks, and Miles is just as surprised. “Obviously.”

Charlotte translates, telling Jin that Locke is sure, but they need to get to The Orchid. Why? “A way off the island.” She tells him Locke is planning to leave here and bring back all of his friends, including his wife. He thinks it’s the only way to stop the flashes.

Jin looks at Locke, confused. “Bring Sun back?” Locke nods. “Why you bring her back?”

“Because she never should have left.”

~*~*~

Flash back to Sun with her gun trained on Ben. “I’ve spent the last three years thinking…believing that he was dead. You say you have proof he’s alive, I want to see it.”

“Why don’t you put down the gun? No one wants to see it go off—“

“How do you know he’s alive!” Sun shouts, shoving the gun against Ben’s throat.

Everyone can only stand by and watch. Kate takes Aaron to her car.

“There’s someone,” Ben answers calmly. “Someone here in Los Angeles. Let me take you to them and I’ll s how you the proof.”

“Someone? Who?”

“The same person that’s gonna show us how to get back to The Island,” Ben answers, and suddenly Kate interrupts, “Is that what this is about?” She looks at Jack. “You know about this?”

“No, no—“

“And that is why you’re pretending to care about Aaron? To convince me to go back there?” she interrupts, angry.

“I wasn’t pretending anything!” Jack insists, but Kate thinks they’re all crazy.

“Kate—“

“Jack! Don’t!” She gets in her car and leaves.

Sayid starts to walk off and Ben asks him where he’s going.

“I don’t want to have any part of this,” he answers. “And if I see any you—“ he points to Jack, then nods to Ben “—or him again, it will be extremely unpleasant for all of us.” Sayid leaves.

Sun still has the gun at Ben’s jaw. He tells her he just needs 30 minutes. That’s as long as it’ll take to get to the person who has the proof. “Or you can shoot me and never know.”

Sun stares at him a second, then, “Let’s go.”

~*~*~

Back on The Island, Locke leads the way.

“How far?” Jin asks.

“Just over the next ridge.”

“How you will leave The Island?”

“I’m not sure yet.”

“I’ll go with you.”

“No, no it doesn’t work like that,” Locke insists as they continue through the jungle. “It’s a one man job.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know why, Jin, it just is. But I promise I’ll bring Sun back.”

Jin stares at him for a moment, then walks after him in silence.

At the back of the line, Daniel asks Charlotte if she wants to take a break.

“Let’s just get there.”

“So, speak any other languages?” Daniel asks.

“Just Klingon,” she jokes. Then, in all seriousness, asks, “Dan is this really going to work? “

“It does make empirical sense that if this started at The Orchid, then that’s where it’s gotta stop. As far as bringing back the people who left in order to stop these temporal shifts? That’s where we leave science behind.”

Suddenly Charlotte sways, and Daniel catches her. “You okay?”

The high-pitched whine begins to grow and Charlotte looks up at the sky as it begins to whiten. “Oh no!”

Everybody grabs their head in pain as—FLASH! It’s now night.

They barely have enough time to catch their breath before it starts again. “Come on!” Sawyers shouts at the whitening sky and Charlotte cries out in pain as—FLASH! It’s day again.

Everyone lets go of their heads, trying to get their bearings, and Charlotte suddenly falls to the ground.

“Charlotte!” Daniel kneels down next to her as Sawyer and Juliet rush over to help. “Charlotte?”

“Juliet?” Sawyer asks, and she looks up.

“Huh?”

“You have a little—” he indicates her bloody nose, and she answers, “You too.” Great. Just great.

“Charlotte can you hear me? Charlotte, it’s Daniel—”

Suddenly, Charlotte’s eyes snap open, and she frantically begins speaking Korean to Jin. Jin listens, alarmed and confused.

When they ask him to translate, Charlotte switches back to English. “Don’t let them bring her back! No matter what,” she tells Jin. “Don’t let them bring her back!”

Locke glances from Charlotte to Jin, and Charlotte vehemently tells Jin, “This place is death!”

~*~*~

Sun and Jack are now driving in the car with Ben. Sun glances out at the night. “You said we’d be there in 30 minutes.”

“I didn’t account for traffic,” Ben answers sharply.

They drive in silence a moment then Jack suddenly tells Sun that he’s sorry, for leaving Jin. When they were on that freighter things just happened so fast. “I knew he was down below…we should have waited for him.”

She turns to look at him. “Why are you telling me this now, Jack? Are you going to ask me not to kill Ben if he’s lying about my husband?”

“After what he just did to Kate, if you don’t do it, I will.”

Ben’s had enough. Suddenly slamming on the breaks, he turns to face them.

“What are you doing?” Jack asks, exasperated.

“What I’m doing, is helping you!” Ben shouts, fed up with their complaining. “And if you had any idea what I’ve had to do to do keep you SAFE? To keep your friends safe, you’d never stop thanking me!” Sun and Jack exchange a look and Ben continues, “You wanna shoot me, then shoot me, but let’s get on with it! What’s it gonna be?”

Sun stares at him, unphased. “Drive.”

Ben nods curtly and starts the car back up.

~*~*~

On The Island, Daniel uses a damp cloth on Charlotte’s face as she asks, “Why can’t daddy come with us?”

“Charlotte? Can you hear me?”

“You know what my mom would say about me marrying an American,” she answers, then turns to Daniel and proudly adds, “You know, I know more about ancient Carthage than Hannibal himself.”

Everyone is very confused. What’s she talking about? Daniel has no idea. Locke urges them all to get going, and Daniel tells him they’re going to have to carry Charlotte. “No,” Locke answers. “She’s gonna hold us up.” Daniel stands up. “We can’t just leave her.”

“Flashes are getting closer together,” Sawyer answers. “Maybe when your nose starts bleedin’ you’ll realize we gotta get out of dodge now. We’ll come back for her just as soon as we can.”

“No,” Daniel answers. “No way, I’m not leaving her behind.”

“Let them go without me,” Charlotte says, finally making sense.

“Charlotte no,” Daniel answers, bending back down to talk to her. “I’m not gonna leave you behind.”

FLAAAAAAAASH

“We have to move, now!” Locke shouts, and Charlotte agrees. “He’s right, go.”

“Charl—”

“No, no just go!” Suddenly Charlotte fades into another world. “Oh turn it up, I love Geronimo Jackson!”

Daniel sighs, and Juliet gently reminds him that they’re running out of time.

“Go,” Daniel finally says, and Miles looks at him. Is he sure? “I’ll stay with her.”

“Let me ask you something, John,” Sawyer asks, walking over to Locke. “If we don’t even know when the hell we are, what happens if The Orchid ain’t around anymore?”

Judging from Locke’s expression, he didn’t think about that before.

“Look for the well,” Charlotte suddenly answers. “You’ll find it at the well.”

“Yeah we’ll be sure and do that,” Sawyer answers, humoring her.

“Let’s go,” Locke announces and starts into the jungle. Juliet and Miles get up, and Jin hesitates, giving Charlotte a concerned look. Sawyer pats his shoulder, nodding that this is the right thing to do, and Jin follows. Miles takes a last look at his fellow scientists and heads after Jin.

~*~*~

While walking through the jungle, Miles wipes at his bloody nose. This is not good. They all continue to walk, Locke leading the way, and finally they get to The Orchid.

“We’re here,” Locke announces, looking up at what remains of The Orchid.

“Thank God,” Juliet says, letting out a relieved sigh. “What are the odds that we’d end up in the same time as this thing?”

On cue, The Island flashes.

The Orchid is gone.

Sawyer turns to look at Juliet. “Just had to say something?”

Suddenly Locke turns and heads back through the foliage. They follow him, wordlessly, until he gets to an old well with a rope leading down.

Locke sets down his knife and tries to grab the rope as everyone stares at the well. Miles wants to know how Charlotte knew it was there. Nobody has an answer.

~*~*~

Back in the jungle, Charlotte coughs, telling Daniel, “I’ve been here before.”

“You’ve been here before?” he asks, soothing her hair.

“I grew up here,” She answers. “On The Island.” Daniel frowns at her. Maybe he isn’t just talking jibberish. “There was this thing, this Dharma Initiative,” Charlotte explains. “And then I moved away with my mom. Just my mom, I never saw my dad again. And then when I got back to England, I’d ask my mom about this place, yeah? But she would say that it wasn’t real, and that I’d made it up! That’s why I became an anthropologist, to find this island again. It’s what I’ve been searching for my whole life.”

“Charlotte,” Daniel asks, leaning closer to gently ask, “Why are you telling me this?”

She gives him a pained look, answering, “Because I remember something now…When I was little, living here, there was this man, crazy man, he really scared me.” Close to tears, she adds, “And he told me I had to leave the island and never ever come back. He told me that if I ever came back, I would die.”

Daniel gives her a comforting smile, shaking his head. “Charlotte, I don’t understand.”

“Daniel,” Charlotte cries, finally understanding. “I think that man was you.”

~*~*~

Sawyer stares down into the dark well as Locke prepares to descend down the rope. “You’re goin’ down ther?”

“Uh-huh.”

“What exactly are you hoping to find?”

“A way off The Island.”

“Expectin’ a subway?”

Locke can’t help but grin at Sawyer. “Goodbye James.” He walks around to the other side of the well, preparing to get in. “Miles, I’ll see you when I get back.”

“No!” Jin suddenly shouts. “Stop.” Locke looks at him, surprised, and Jin answers, “You don’t bring Sun back.”

“Well I have to bring them all back, that’s how it works,” Locke answers.

“How you know?” Jin asks, not so sure this plan is going to work.

“I-I just know.”

Suddenly Jin grabs the rope, holding the machete up to it and warning, “I will cut this.”

“No,” Locke quickly answers, holding out a hand. “You do that you’ll kill every one of us.”

“This Island is bad,” Jin answers. “You don’t bring Sun back, you promise. You promise you don’t bring my baby!”

“Alright,” Locke finally answers, treading carefully. “Okay, you have my word.”

“Promise? John?”

“I promise.”

Jin lets go of the rope, slicing the machete into a nearby tree branch.

“I won’t go to Sun, Jin, but she might find me,” Locke says. “If she does, what do I tell her?”

“You tell her I’m dead. You say I wash up, you bury me.” Sun takes off his wedding ring and hands it to Locke. “Proof.”

Locke takes it and puts it into his pocket. “I’ll be back as soon as I can.” He climbs onto the edge of the well and grabs the rope.

“You sure you don’t want us to lower you down?” Sawyer asks, and Locke replies, “Where would be the fun in that?”

“John,” Juliet says before he starts down. “If whatever you’re attempting to do actually works? Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” Locke starts down, but he’s only just into the well when the whining begins again.

Miles looks up at the sky. “Uh-oh.”

As the sky begins to brighten, and a bright light begins to flow up the inside of the well, Locke starts to get knocked around. Sawyer grabs the rope, shouting at Locke to “hold on!”

FLAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSHHHH

“Ahhhh!” Locke falls to the bottom of the well, snapping his leg in half. He shouts out in pain, but no one hears him.

Above ground, Jin opens his eyes and Miles looks at Sawyer, who’s still hanging onto to the rope. “I think you can let go of that now.” Sawyer opens his eyes and sees the rope, now buried in the ground.

“No! No—”

“James, stop—“

“No!” Sawyer shouts, dropping to his knees to begin digging.

“James, stop,” Juliet tries again, but he just angrily shouts back, “Come on and help me!”

Jin stares down at the buried rope in horror as Juliet kneels next to Sawyer. “James…we can’t help him.”

Knowing, she’s right, Sawyer reluctantly stops digging. Doesn’t make him feel any better about it though.

~*~*~

In the jungle, Charlotte coughs again and Daniel holds her face, urging her to stay with him. “Everything’s gonna be okay,” he tells her. “You know back at The Hatch? I talked to Desmond.” He takes her hand. “I told him to find my mother. She can help us Charlotte, she will help us.”

“How can your mother help us?” Charlotte cries, more blood seeping out of her nose.

“She can.”

Charlotte breaks into another coughing fit, then suddenly stops and smiles at him.

“What?” Daniel asks gently, soothing he hair.

“I’m not allowed to have chocolate truffles before dinner.” With that, Charlotte fades away one last time.

“Charlotte? Charlotte, no…” Daniel cries, holding the hand of the woman he loves. Charlotte is dead.

~*~*~

At the darkened bottom of the well, Locke is still crying out in pain. He looks down to see the bone sticking out from his leg and lets out a shout. “James! Can you hear me?...Can anyone hear me?!”

Footsteps sound in the darkness, and Locke turns. “Who’s there?”

A figure steps forth, taking a lantern off the wall. He turns to face Locke. “Hello John.”

“You.” It’s Jack’s Dad. As he walks toward him and kneels down beside Lock, Locke asks, “What are you doing here?”

“I’m here to help you the rest of the way.”

Locke is confused. “I don’t understand…”

“You came to see me in the cabin,” Jack’s dad answers, staring down at him. “You asked me how to save The Island and I told you you had to move it…I said that YOU had to move it, John.”

Fighting the pain in his leg, Locke argues, “But Ben said he knew how to move it. He told me that I had to stay here and lead his people.”

“And since when did listening to him get you anywhere worth a damn?”

Good point. Locke doesn’t know what to say to this, and Jack’s dad kneels down again to say, “The good news, is that you’re here now. Are you ready to go?”

“I-I, don’t know what to do,” Locke admits. After all he’s been through, none of this is making any sense anymore.

“There’s a woman living in Los Angeles. And once you get all of your friends together, and it must be all of them, everyone who left. And once you’ve persuaded them to join you? This woman will tell you exactly how to come back.”

“Who is she?”

“Her name is Eloise Hawking.”

“What if I can only convince some of them to come back?” Locke asks, worried.

“I believe in you, John. You can do this.”

Locke takes this in, then answers, “Richard said I was going to die.”

“I suppose that’s…that’s why they call it a sacrifice.”

Locke fights the pain and his own mixed emotions and finally answers, “Alright…Alight, I’m ready.”

“Good.” Jack’s dad gets up and carries the lantern further into the tunnel, pointing. “On the other side of this column here, a wheel slipped off its axis. All you have to do is give it a little push.”

Locke crawls forward, painfully asking, “Can you help me up?”

“No, sorry I can’t.”

Locke stares at him, lets out a long breath, then cries out in pain as he lifts himself up to a standing position by using the nearby rocky wall.

Using the wall as a crutch, Locke inches forward, blinking against the bright yellowish-white light that surrounds the wheel. It flashes on and off, highlighting Locke as he lunges forward from the wall to a column in the middle of the room. He lets out a cry of pain and takes a second to catch his breath, glancing from the rattling wheel to Jack’s dad and back.

“Good luck, John.”

Locke hobbles forward, grabbing onto one of the spokes in the heel. He tugs. At first it doesn’t move. He pulls again, and this time the wheel turns. White light begins pouring into the room and Locke looks to Jack’s dad.

“Say hello to my son.”

As the flash grows, Locke calls out, “Who’s your son?”

FLASH

Jack, Sun, and Ben get out of the car at their destination. A church. Ben nods to Sun. “May I?” She nods and takes out Jin’s wedding ring. He holds it out to Sun. “Take it.” She takes it, reading the inscription. It’s definitely Jin’s.

“How do you have this?” Sun asks Ben, shocked.

“John gave it to me.”

“You said John never came to see you,” Jack reminds, and Ben turns to him to answer, “That’s true Jack, I went to see him.” Turning back to Sun, Ben says, “Jin gave it to him before he left The Island.”

“Why didn’t Locke tell me himself?”

“I don’t know. Maybe he never had a chance before he died. I’m sorry I had to bring you here before I told you Sun, but all those people back on The Island? Jin included? Need our help. There is a woman in this church, and she can tell us how to get back to your husband. But we’re running out of time Sun, so I need to you to decide right now. Will you come with me?”

Sun stares down at the ring in her hand then nods. “Yes.”

“What are you doing here?”

They all turn to see Desmond walk up. Even Ben is surprised. “I assume the same thing you are.”

“You’re looking for Faraday’s mother too?” Desmond asks, and Ben just gives him a strange look then quickly turns and heads for the church. Hmm…

All four of them walk in to find the same white-haired woman from before lighting votive candles.

“Hello Eloise,” Ben says, and Desmond looks up from shutting the door, shocked to see the woman who refused to sell him Penny’s ring.

“Hello Benjamin,” Eloise answers simply. She glances around at the people he’s arrived with and adds, “I thought I said all of them?”

“This is all I could get on short notice.”

She sighs. “Well I supposed it will have to do for now…Alright,” she says, glancing at them all with a hint of a smile on her face. “Let’s get started.”

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Dun, dun, duuuuunnnn! I loved Sawyer and Jin's reunion in this episode! And even though Charlotte was never my favorite character, I do feel sorry for her. And Locke. Poor guy is just so determined to believe. I couldn't help but feel bad for him when he was struggling towards the wheel. Great episode! Have I mentioned I'm really lovin' this season?
