Lost: The Lie Recap
February 21st 2009 19:12
Three Years Ago
Everyone who was rescued from The Island is sitting on Penny’s boat talking about what they’re going to do when they get back to civilization. Lapidus joins them.
“Dude, they’ll find out.”
“Not if we stick to the story,” Jack tells Hurley.
“I don’t know Jack,” Sayid answers. “It could be a risk.”
“It’s the only way we have to do this.”
Lapidus hands Desmond a beer. “They’re still at it, huh?”
Jack is sitting on one side of the boat, addressing Sayid, Hurley, and Sun sitting at a nearby table. Desmond, Penny, Lapidus, Kate, and the baby sit nearby, listening.
“Look we’re running out of time. We’ve got to make a decision now,” Jack tells them all. “Are we all okay with this?”
“This is a decision that will affect the rest of our lives,” Sayid answers. “I am not taking it lightly.”
“Kate?” Jack asks.
“Yeah.”
“Sun?”
She nods.
“Frank?”
“What?”
“Sorry you got dragged into this,” Jack says, “but we need to know you’re with us.”
“Whatever you guys decide I’ll just roll with it.”
Jack asks Hurley if he’s with them, and Hurley hesitates. “I don’t think we should lie, dude.”
Jack tries to convince him that they need to protect the people they left behind, but Hurley doesn’t understand how lying will protect them.
“It protects them from Charles Widmore,” Jack argues. “The guy hired a boatload of people to kill all of us. You think the plane crash, you think after telling the truth he’s gonna leave them alone?”
Hurley looks at Penny for help. “Look, he’s your dad right? Can’t you just, like, call him off?”
Penny shakes her head regretfully. “There’s no calling my father off.”
“I mean The Island disappeared,” Hurley says, still not convinced. “We all saw it, it’s gone.” He makes the “bloop” sound of disappearing.
“You think anyone’s gonna believe that?” Jack asks. “Believe any of it? They’re gonna think you’re crazy.”
Hurley stares at him. “Not if someone backs me up.”
His words hang in the air as the boat continues to bob gently in the open ocean.
“Sayid, come on,” Hurley tries. “They’ll think I’m nuts if I tell the truth, but what if we all do? I mean, if we can stick together, we can make them believe us.” He pauses a second, then adds, “I don’t want to spend the rest of my life lying, to do?”
“No,” Sayid answers, but adds, “I don’t believe we have a better choice.”
Hurley is crushed that no one else is going to back him up.
“I’m sorry Hurley,” Sayid tells him. “But we have to lie.”
“You know what dude?” Hurley asks, grimly, staring at the white table in front of him. “I’m gonna remember this. And some day you’re gonna need my help, and I’m telling you right now.” He looks at him. “You’re not getting’ it.”
~*~*~
Three years later, Hurley is frantically driving away from the safehouse, an unconscious Sayid in the passenger seat next to him.
“Wake up Sayid!” Hurley shouts, reaching over to shake his friend. “Sayid? Sayid wake up! Sayid!” It’s no use, he’s out cold.
With absolutely no idea what to do, Hurley weaves all over the busy road as he reaches over to pull Sayid’s seatbelt on. In his nervousness, he looks down to click the buckle in and takes out a mailbox. A siren sounds, and Hurley glances in his rearview mirror to see a cop car pulling him over.
“No, no, no, no, no, no, what do I do?!” Hurley asks the unconscious Sayid. When he doesn’t get an answer, he frantically shakes Sayid. “What am I supposed to do!”
With no other choice, Hurley pulls over, shutting off the car and watching the policewoman get out of the car and whispering to himself, “Okay, okay, okay, just stay calm.”
The cop knocks on the window, and Hurley just stares at her. "What the hell were you thinking?"
“Ana Lucia?” Hurley stares at her, somewhere between relieved and surprised.
“You were driving like a maniac,” she chastises. “And why’d you pull over?”
“I just…” Hurley stutters, “I thought—”
“You didn’t think,” she interrupts. “What if I were real? What if a real cop stopped you? They already have pictures of you covered in blood, with a gun in your hand.”
Hurley glances down at his shirt and answers, “Actually it was ketchup. We went through a drive-through and uh—”
Ana Lucia just shakes her head. “Well, you need to pull yourself together. You’ve got a lot of work to do.”
“I do?”
“Let’s start with the basics,” she instructs. “First off, you need new clothes. Then you need to go to a safe place, and take Sayid to somebody you trust.” Hurley glances at Sayid, and Ana Lucia asks, “You getting all this?”
Hurley nods, calming down. “Yeah…”
Ana Lucia pats the door frame. “Then get to it. And stay away from the cops.” Pointing at him, she makes sure he’s listening as she adds, “Do not get arrested.”
“Thanks Ana Lucia,” Hurley answers, still looking at her as if he’s not sure if he’s really seeing her.
She starts to leave, then, “Oh yeah—” She puts on her sunglasses. “Libby says hi.”
Hurley sits there a moment, then notices that the cop car in his side mirror is gone, now just an empty space in front of an old truck. He sticks his head out the window, sees no Ana Lucia or cop car, and then turns to Sayid. “Well,” he says, starting the car back up again. “You heard her.”

Back on The Island, Bernard and Rose are arguing about which is the best way to build a fire. She thinks he has too much wood, it’ll smother the fire. He thinks that it’ll be fine, and that his way is much better than just rubbing two sticks together hoping they’ll catch fire. Besides, “if we don’t have enough wood, the leaves just burn out!”
“Who cares about fire?” a man named Neil interrupts. “Any minute the sky could light up, and who the hell knows what could happen this time?”
“Neil—“ Rose stands up, irritated. “—we are trying to focus on what we can control here. You can either help us be quiet.”
“Who’s shirt is this?” Sawyer suddenly calls out, and Neal turns around. “It’s mine.”
“Can I have it?”
“What does it matter?” Neil grumbles. “We’re all gonna be dead by sundown.”
“I’ll take that as a yes.” Sawyer puts on the shirt and goes over to join Juliet, who is looking over Daniel’s raft.
“Still in one piece?”
“As far as I can tell.”
“I figured it would have disappeared with the rest of our stuff.”
“I guess whatever we had with us when moved is along for the ride,” she answers.
Sawyer notices her staring at something and asks, “What?”
“Look who’s back.”
They both turn to see Daniel walking out from the jungle. He goes over to give Charlotte a hug, and they join him.
“Welcome back Dr. Wizard,” Sawyer quips,
“I think it’s ‘Mr. Wizard,” Miles corrects.
Sawyer glares at him. “Shut up.” Turning to Daniel, he says, “You were gone for two hours. What were you doing?”
“Yeah, you’re absolutely right, I’m sorry,” Daniel answers, stumbling over his explanation. “I left my pack in the jungle, and I was coming back, and I-I just, it was a while before I realized that I was just—uh, it was really long.”
“Well, you figured out when the sky’s gonna light up again?” Sawyer asks, and Daniel tells him that he doesn’t know. Well, does he have a plan?
Juliet thinks they should take Daniel’s raft, but he doesn’t think that’s a good idea. They can’t just sail out, he needs to calculate a very specific bearing. “And in order to do that—” he pulls out some gold device from his bag “—I need to determine where we are now…In time.”
“And what are the rest of us supposed to do?” Charlotte asks, and Miles decides that he’s “gonna go find us something to eat.” He stands up and Juliet asks how he’s planning on doing that.
“Don’t worry about it.” Miles heads off into the jungle.
Juliet glances between Sawyer and Daniel, and decides, “I guess we’ll get the water.
~*~*~
Speaking of water, Hurley tosses a glass at Sayid, slapping his face lightly. “Dude wake up!” Nothing. “Come on, I can’t do this on my own!” Hurley digs through Sayid’s wallet and pulls out some money. “I” promise I’ll pay you back!” He puts Sayid’s sunglasses on his unconscious friend, and tells him to, “Wait right here.” He shuts the door, and Sayid’s head lolls to the side.
Hurley rushes into a gas station and goes to the nearest clothes rack. He rifles through the shirts until he finds a bright yellow one in his size and goes up to the counter to pay for it.
The girl at the cash register looks down at the shirt with the little dog on it, and asks, “Shih-tzu?”
“I…like Shih-tzus,” Hurley answers, not looking at her.
Reading the shirt, she answers, “It looks like you heart them.” Noticing his ketchup-stained shirt, she asks, “Rough night?”
“Yeah.”
The girl glances out at the car and Sayid. “Your friend’s pretty wasted.”
“Yeah.”
“I know you from somewhere, don’t I?”
Hurley glances at the muted TV behind her. The one that’s currently showing the news with a picture of him with the gun on the balcony and the words “Triple Murder Suspect” under it.
“No,” he answers worriedly.
The girl isn’t convinced. “I do, yeah you definitely look familiar.”
“I just have one of those faces,” he answers, wishing she’d just let him pay for the shirt already.
“You’re lying.”
The words catch his attention, and Hurley looks up. They stare at each other for a long time, and he finally answers a stilted, “I don’t…believe in lying.”
“I remember!” the girl finally answers. “You’re the guy who won the lottery. And you crashed in that plane.”
“No,” Hurley lies, not looking at her. “I must look like him…” He chances a glance at the TV as the girl answers, “Hey, buy a ticket here. If you win, we get a commission—your good luck.”
“Sorry, wrong dude,” Hurley quickly answers, tossing the money on the counter and telling her to “keep the change” as he rushes out.
After putting on his new “I heart Shih-tzus” shirt, Hurley tosses his old clothes into the seat and gets behind the wheel again. Sayid is still out cold. Hurley puts on his seatbelt and starts the car. “Okay, we’re outta here.”
Hurley and Sayid drive out, just missing Kate and Aaron as they drive into the gas station.
~*~*~
Kate turns off the car and takes off her sunglasses, opening the glove compartment to look at the map. Aaron tells her he wants to go home, and she tells him to go back to his book. She pulls out her cell phone and brings up Jack’s number. She stares at it for a moment, then shuts the phone. Suddenly it rings. The number says it’s an unknown caller.
Kate answers the phone. “Hello?...I-I can’t believe it’s you….No, hi, how are you?...Wait, you’re in LA? Of course I can meet you where—I know exactly where that is, I’ll be there in a half an hour.” Kate hangs up the phone and tells Aaron they’re going, “to see a friend.”
~*~*~
Ben unscrews a vent and pulls out a cloth-covered box, which he then puts into his bag. Jack enters and finds his coat, patting his pockets. Ben looks up.
“Are you looking for your pills, Jack?” When Jack doesn’t answer, he adds, “I flushed them down the toilet.”
“Thank you,” Jack answers. “I was just going to do that myself.”
“Yeah I figured you were.”
Jack notices the bag and asks if Ben’s going somewhere. He’s checking out.
“Where are we going?”
“*You’re* going home,” Ben tells him. “And find yourself a suitcase. If there’s anything in this life you want, pack it in there. Because you’re never coming back.”
Jack takes a deep breath, nodding as he thinks about this. Finally he answers, “Good.”
“Good,” Ben agrees. “I’ll pick you up in six hours.”
“And where will you be going?”
“John’s casket is outside in a carpet van,” Ben answers, picking up his bag. “I need to move it somewhere safe.”
“Safe?” Jack asks, still not quite believing all this is happening. “He’s dead, right?”
Ben stares at him a moment, then just answers, “I’ll see you in six hours, Jack.” He leaves.
~*~*~
Hurley’s dad makes himself a sandwich, grabs a drink, and heads out into the living room, clicking the TV on to “Expose”. The show begins and he takes off his jacket, pulling back the recliner and taking a big bite of his sandwich. He’s just gotten comfortable when there’s a knock at the door.
He gets up to go to the front door, but notices the frantic knocking is actually coming from the patio door. “Hmmm.” He changes course, and goes to see who it is. He opens the door and stops short, shocked to see Hurley standing there with Sayid thrown over his shoulders.
“Hey Dad. How’s it goin’?”
~*~*~
Hurley brings Sayid through into the house, asking if his dad has seen the news.
“No, I just got up,” His dad answers, asking, “Why, are you wanted again?”
“Uh yeah, kinda,” Hurley answers, carrying an unconscious Sayid to the couch. “Is Mom here?”
“No, she’s out shopping.”
Hurley settles Sayid down on the couch and his dad lifts Sayid’s eyelids. “Oh man, he’s out.”
“Is he breathing?” Hurley asks nervously, and his dad answers, “Barely. What happened?”
“He got shot by a dart.” Hurley leans over to shake Sayid. Still nothing.
“A dart?” his dad asks, confused. “What, were you in the zoo or something?”
“No we were in the safehouse.”
“The Safehouse?!”
“Sayid took me there. To protect me,” Hurley answers, getting frantic. “These two guys jumped down and they shot him with darts and now he’s in a coma or something!”
Hurley’s dad points out how none of this makes sense, and asks what he’s doing out of the mental institution to begin with.
“Sayid pulled me out. I’m in danger! We both are!”
“Danger? From who?”
Hurley glances down at his unconscious friend. “I’m not sure exactly.”
Suddenly the gate intercom rings. Hurley’s dad goes to answer it. It’s the LAPD wanting him to open the gate. Hurley begins to pace and his dad turns to ask, “Just what kind of trouble are you in?”
“Dad, please,” Hurley begs, “Just don’t tell ‘em I’m here!”
His dad thinks a second then agrees. “Alright, but then you’re gonna tell me the truth.”
~*~*~
Hurley watches through a small window in the door as his father talks to the LAPD. They leave and Hurley lets out a relieved sigh, leaning his head against the door. His opens the door. “You killed three people?!”
“No, Sayid did,” Hurley answers quickly. His father glances to the unconscious man. “Oh well that’s better. Come on let’s get him to the couch.”
“He saved me.”
“I think we should call a lawyer, right now.” He grabs Sayid’s feet as Hurley picks up his shoulders.
“No, no, no,” Hurley answers as they take Sayid into the next room. “We can’t go public! They’re after us!”
“Who?” his dad asks, exasperated. “WHO is after you?”
“I don’t know,” Hurley admits. “Sayid knows. He can explain.”
“Sayid ain’t explaining nothing,” his dad answers as they make their way back to the couch. “We need to get him to a hospital!”
“Did you not hear me?” Hurley asks, sitting down on the couch next to Sayid. “People are trying to kill us! If we go to the hospital they’ll find us, like, like the Godfather! It’s the last place to go and everyone knows it! They-they smother you with pillows and make it look like an accident!” Panicking, Hurley shakes his unconscious friend, shouting, “Sayid! Please wake up!”
“That’s not gonna work, we need a doctor,” his father insists. The words finally get through to Hurley. Looking at his dad he tells him, “I think I know what to do.”

*ding* A hotel elevator opens and people get out. Kate and Aaron step in.
“Mommy can I push the button?”
“Sure you can sweetie, but we’re going all the way to the top so I need you to press number 31.” She bends down to pick him up so he can reach the button. “You see it? Okay, you get it, 3 1.” Aaron presses the right button and Kate grins. “Yeah! That’s the one! You pressed it, you pressed 31!” She swings him around happily.
They walk down to the end of the hall and press the bell. The door opens and Kate tells Sun, “Hi.”
Sun smiles. “Hello, Kate.”
~*~*~
Ben walks into a butcher shop and takes number 342. The lady behind the counter finishes helping a customer then looks at him. “Hello, Ben.” He walks over to the cash register and she adds, “If it’s a porterhouse you’re lookin’ for, we’re all out.”
“No, no porterhouse,” Ben answers, glancing over the meat on display. “I do, however, have something very important in my van, Jill, and I need you to watch it for me.”
“Is it what I think it is?”
“It is.”
“He’ll be safe with me.”
Ben glances around the shop, asking if Gabrielle and Jeffrey have checked in yet. She tells him that they have; that “everything’s moving right on schedule. How’s it going with Shepherd?”
“He’s with us.”
“Really?” Jill’s skeptical. “What’d you do, bribe the man with some pills?”
“Cut the man some slack,” Ben warns. “He’s been through a lot, we all have.”
“Right,” Jill nods an apology. “Of course…Sorry.”
“So keep him safe Jill,” Ben tells her. “Because if you don’t…everything we’re about to do won’t matter at all.”

On The Island, everyone sits around in the dark waiting to see if Bernard will be successful with the fire starting. Sawyer doesn’t look to optimistic. Vincent yawns.
Suddenly some sparks ignite, and Rose jumps excitedly. “You got it! You got it, you got it—” Just as quickly as they appeared, the sparks are gone.
“Why’d you do that?” Rose asks her husband, who reminds her, “Because you’re supposed to fan the flame, Rose.”
“I thought you said you knew how to start a fire,” Neil whines, and Rose reminds, “And I thought you said that you didn’t care.”
“I care about surviving!”
“I think you need to take a time-out, *Neil*,” Rose answers, shooting him a warning look. She’s had just about enough of his whining.
Neil lets out a huff and walks off.
“You’ll get it Bernard, you will,” Rose encourages her husband, and he starts again.
Charlotte walks over to hand Daniel a mango. She found them in the jungle. He thanks her, then notices something is wrong.
“You all right?”
“I just can’t seem to shake this bloody headache,” she answers, rubbing her temple.
“Well I’m, sure it’ll pass…” Daniel answers, trying to be encouraging despite what he knows.
“It’s not just that,” Charlotte answers. “It’s the weirdest thing. Earlier I was…I was thinking about my mom and all of a sudden I couldn’t remember her maiden name. I mean, isn’t that odd?”
“Don’t worry about it. Listen, all of us have been under a lot of stress, okay?”
She studies him for a moment, then realizes there’s something he’s not saying. “Daniel,” she asks, alarmed. “Do you know what’s happening to me?”
He stares at her a moment, but before he can answer, Miles calls out, “Dinner!” They look up to see him walking in from the woods with a dead boar.
“That’s great! Wow, where did you get that?” Bernard asks, impressed.
“I found it,” he says, dropping it to the sand in front of everybody.
Sawyer stands up, staring from the boar to Miles. “What do you mean you *found* it?”
“It died in the jungle, I found it,” Miles answers, wiping his brow. “Don’t worry, it’s fine. It’s only been dead three hours.”
“What?”
“Who’s got a knife?”
“Oh a knife? You need a knife?” Neil mocks. He points towards the jungle. “It’s over by the Cuisinart next to the stove.”
“What’s your problem?” Miles asks, and Neil whines, “My problem is we don’t have a knife! We don’t have ANYTHING! And it wouldn’t matter even if we did, because Bernie the dentist can’t even start a fire.”
“Hey ease up there Frobert,” Sawyer tells him, and he angrily replies, “It’s NEIL you inbred!” Sawyer takes a warning step toward him as he continues to complain, “And I’m not gonna ease up! Because I’m tired, and I’m hungry—” Juliet stops Sawyer before he can hurt Neal, as the man continues to shouts, “And I’m screwed—We’re ALL screwed!”
“Calm down, Neil,” Juliet says calmly, “We’re gonna get through this.”
But Neil’s on a roll. “How are ANY of us gonna get through this?! Didn’t you hear what I just said?! We can’t even get FIRE!” Right on cue, a flaming arrow hits him square in the chest.
Shocked, everyone turns around to see more flying at them from the jungle.
“RUN!” Sawyer shouts, and everyone is quick to obey.
Flaming arrows rain down around them as everyone rushes to take cover in the trees. People are dropping left and right, a man is shot in the back and falls to the ground, on fire.
“Split up! Everybody get to the trees!” Sawyer shouts, helping someone up. Charlotte trips and Daniel helps her up. A man is shot in the chest and Juliet stops to shove sand onto the flames. Sawyer spots her and rushes back. “Come on, he’s dead!”
“No—”
“Do you want to be dead too?” he shouts, and this gets her to her feet. She hesitates again, and Sawyer assures her that there’s nothing she could have done. They have to get out, now! They rush into the trees after everyone else.
~*~*~
Hurley glances out the window at the car across the street, then hastily shuts the curtains, turning back to his dad and exclaiming, “Dude, the cops are on a stakeout?”
“You just escaped from a mental institution! There’s dead bodies everywhere, of course they’re on a stakeout!” his father answers exasperatedly, adding, “They think you’re crazy enough to come back home!” He studies his son a second, then asks, “So, are you?...Crazy?”
“Do you think I am?”
“Either that or you’re lying to me…”
His dad’s answer gets to him, and Hurley stares at him a moment, then answers, “Well I’m not crazy. And I have a really good reason why I’m lying to you.”
“Well what is it?” his dad asks, still confused.
Before Hurley can answer, his mom suddenly calls out, “Why is there a dead Pakistan lying on my coat?!”
Both Hurley and his dad rush to look down in the living room, and Hurley quickly assures her that, “he’s not dead, Ma.”
She looks up. “Well, he’s not breathing.”
“He’s not?!” Hurley’s eyes widen and both he and his father hurry down the stairs to check on Sayid.
“Don’t worry Carmen, we have a plan.”
“A plan? What are you talking about?” she asks her husband, totally confused as she watches Hurley bend down next to Sayid and put his hand in front of his mouth.
“He is breathing! Kind of,” Hurley announces, and quickly adds, “Dad we gotta go now!”
“What’s happening?”
“Mom, please—”
“No ‘Mom please” me!” she answers, asking why he’s all over the news as Hurley and his father lift Sayid to carry him out again. “Do you know what they are telling about you?”
“Yeah Mom, I know,” Hurley answers, pushing open the door behind him. “Look, everything’s gonna make sense, I promise!”
“It better!” she warns as they carry Sayid out the door and into the garage.
Outside, the police watch Hurley’s father drive out of the driveway. They nod to him and he waves. “Officers…”

Kate finishes pouring the tea for herself and Sun, and asks her friend how low she’s in LA. Sun tells her that she’s not there for long, just there on business. She pulls out a baby picture of Ji Yeon to show to Kate.
“Awww, she’s beautiful,” Kate answers, grinning at the cute photo.
Sun thanks her and tells her Ji Yeon is with her grandma right now. “I hope someday you get to meet her.” She glances over to Aaron, who’s asleep on the couch. “It would be nice to see her and Aaron play together.”
“Yeah,” Kate answers, not looking Sun in the eye. Sun picks up on her friend’s hesitation and asks if she’s alright. “I’m fine,” Kate answers, taking a sip of tea.
“Are you?”
Kate lowers the glass, looks over at Aaron, then finally admits, “Somebody knows we’re lying.” She tells Sun about the men who came to her house; the ones that wanted the blood sample to test to see if Aaron was really her son.
“Who do these lawyers represent?” Sun asks, and Kate just shakes her head, telling her that they wouldn’t tell her who they were there for.
“Then they’re interested in exposing the lie,” Sun answers seriously. When Kate asks why, she explains, “Because if they were they would just do it. They wouldn’t come to you in private. They don’t care that we’re lying, they just want Aaron.”
Kate doesn’t understand. “Who—who would do that? I—”
“I don’t know,” Sun admits. “But you need to take care of them.”
“What do you mean, ‘take care of them’?” Kate asks.
“Wouldn’t you do anything you had to in order to keep Aaron?”
“What kind of a person do you think I am?”
Sun thinks about Jin running onto the deck of the ship, trying to wave down the helicopter, then answers, “The kind of person who makes hard decisions when she has too.”
(Flash to Kate telling Sun to “get the baby on the chopper, I’ll get Jin.”)
“Like you did on the freighter.” She continues to remember all that happened. “You told me to get on the helicopter and you told me you’d get Jin.”
Clearly, Kate still feels bad about this. “Sun, I hope you don’t think-“
“But you did what you had to do. And if you hadn’t…we probably all would have died instead of just my husband.”
Fighting back tears, Kate tells her she’s “Sorry, I’m so sorry.”
Sun smiles and takes her friend’s hand, assuring her that “I don’t blame you. So,” she asks, trying to bring the conversation to a happier topic. “How’s Jack?”
~*~*~
“Hugo said I could trust you,” Hurley’s dad tells Jack as they walk through a parking garage. “I wasn’t so sure, but he swore I could so, can I?”
“Yes, of course.”
“Alright.” He opens his trunk to show Jack Sayid, still unconscious and under a blanket.
Jack immediately checks Sayid’s pulse, asking what happened to him, and Hurley's dad tells him that his son said he got hit with some kind of dart.
“Where’s Hurley now?”
“At our house, freaking out.”
Jack knows he has to work quickly. He goes to get his car so that they can get Sayid to the hospital.
“No,” Hurley’s dad answers, following Jack quickly through the parked cars. “No, Hugo said whoever did this? They’ll come back after them.”
“All due respect, Mr. Reyes,” Jack answers, still walking. “But you brought him to me, so I’m gonna do what I think is best for Sayid.” Jack reaches his truck and pulls the door open.
“Alright, fine, take him to the hospital. But all due respect, Dr. Shepherd, when this is over, you’re gonna do something for me.”
“What?”
“Stay away from Hugo. Whatever it is you talked him into, something tells me you don’t have his best interest at heart. So stay away from my son.” With that, he’s gone.
Jack watches him walk off and gets into his car.
~*~*~
Pulling up to the hospital, Jack gets on the phone.
“Hello?”
“Ben,” he answers, throwing the truck into park. “You’ll never guess who just showed up at my door.”
“Who?”
Jack gets out of the car, going around to the back and answering, “Sayid.”
~*~*~
Hurley sits at the table in front of a bowl of fruit and his mother uncaps a glass bottle and hands it to him. “Who is Sayid? I thought he was your friend.”
“He is my friend,” Hurley answers, adding, “But he also has this double life where he does crazy ninja moves and spy stuff. But he’s a good guy.” His mother points out that a good guy doesn’t kill three men. “He doesn’t kill any men.”
“Mom…”
“Don’t mom me. You are in terrible trouble, Hugo,” she says, walking around to sit down next to him. “The News thinks you did this. And if the News does, everyone does.” She looks at her son. “Why is this happening? How can ANYBODY want to hurt you?”
Hurley shrugs, not looking at her. “I don’t know.”
Taking his face in her hand, she makes him look her in the eye. He doesn’t want to. “Tell your mother the truth.”
Hurley looks his mother in the eye and can’t lie to her. Finally he breaks. “We lied, Ma,” he answers, voice cracking.
“What do you mean you lied?”
“The Oceanic Six, we lied about the crash.”
Confused, she asks him, “And what did happen?”
Hurley stares at his bottle for a long time, trying to figure out how to start, then finally says, “Okay…See, we did crash. But it was on this crazy island. And we waited for rescue, but there wasn’t a rescue. And then there were other people on The Island. We called them “The Others”. And they started attacking us. And we found some hatches and there was a button that you had to push every 108 minutes or—“ He hesitates. “Well I was never really clear on that. But, The Others didn’t have anything to do with the Hatches, that was the Dharma Initiative. They’re all dead, The Others killed them, and now they’re trying to kill us. And then we teamed up with The Others because some worse people were coming on a freighter—Desmond’s girlfriend’s father sent them to kill us—so we stole their helicopter and flew it to their freighter, but it blew up. And we couldn’t go back to The Island because it disappeared. So then we crashed in the ocean, and we floated there for a while until a boat came and picked us up. And by then there were six of us.” He glances at his mom. “That part was true.”
Hurley hesitates a long moment, then close to tears, adds, “But the rest of the people? Who were on the plane?...They’re still on that island.”
Watching how much this is affecting her son, Hurley’s mom places a comforting hand on his. “I believe you.”
Hurley wipes away his tears and looks at her.
“I don’t understand you,” she admits. “But I believe you.”
“A lot of people died, Ma. And now this bad stuff is happening because—“ his voice breaks. “Well—” He shakes his head, clearly very troubled. “We shouldn’t have lied.”
~*~*~
Sawyer and Juliet are walking through the jungle in the dark. Sawyer stumbles. “Ow!” Juliet turns to him, asking, “you okay?”
“Yeah I’m fine, I just stepped on something,” he answers, irritated. He pulls up his foot to find a twig sticking out just beneath his toe. “Something jammed—” He pulls it out, swearing, and telling her they need to keep going to hook up with everybody at the creek.
“It’s a long creek James, which part.”
“I don’t know, the wet part,” Sawyer answers sarcastically as they start to walk again. “Sorry if my plan’s not up to Others s—” They both stop short, hearing footsteps in the leaves.
Ducking down behind the foliage, Sawyer and Juliet wait to see who it is. Someone in khaki pants and carrying a gun walks by. They watch another person walk by, listening to the crunch of footsteps on leaves, and the surrounding nightlife.
“Who were those people?” Sawyer finally whispers. “Are they yours? Did they shoot the arrows?”
“You want to crawl out there and ask them?”
“You don’t have to be a wise—” Suddenly Sawyer’s cut off as someone grabs Juliet by the hair and pulls her back. Another someone grabs Sawyer, pulling him to his feet and putting a machete to his throat. The third soldier points a gun at them, demanding, “What are you doing on our island?”

In the hospital emergency room, Jack sets Sayid on a bed and hooks him up to oxygen and an ECO preview. It’s not good. Jack searches through the medicine then fills a syringe, injecting Sayid. The heart monitor continues to beep. No change. Cursing, Jack grabs a small flashlight to check Sayid’s eyes. “Come on Sayid, come on…”
Suddenly Sayid springs to life, grabbing Jack by the throat. “Sayid! It’s Jack!” Jack finally manages to croak out, and Sayid lets go, falling back to the bed and breathing hard. “What happened?”
“You’re fine,” Jack answers, closing the door and pouring Sayid a glass of water. “You’re in the hospital. Hurley’s father brought you to me.”
“Hurley’s father?” He take the glass and sips.
“They say you’ve been attacked.”
“Where’s Hurley?”
“At this parents’ house.”
“Who’s with him?”
“I don’t know, his mother maybe?”
Sayid finally looks at Jack. “Does anyone else know he’s there?”

Hurley’s warming up a hot pocket in the microwave. It dings and he pulls it out with his bare hand. “Ow!” He quickly tosses it to a napkin on the counter as Ben suddenly appears in the doorway. “Hello Hugo.”
“Ahh!” Hurley throws a hot pocket at him. It hits the door frame, gushing its contents all over the wall. “Get away from me,” Hurley warns. “Get away!”
“Hugo, I know you’re in trouble, and I can assure you I’ve take care of everything,” Ben answers in his calm Ben way. He nods behind him. “I have a car waiting for us out back. The police didn’t see me come in. I can get you out of here.”
“No way, dude,” Hurley immediately answers. “Sayid warned me about you.”
“I’m taking you TO Sayid,” Ben answers. “That’s why I’m here, Jack called me.”
Hurley stares at him.
“How else would I know that they’re together?”
“No,” Hurley decides. “You’re playing one of your mind games. They would never trust you.”
“In their defense, I’m not an easy person to trust,” Ben admits. “But they came around when they realized that we all want the same thing.”
“What’s that?”
“To go back to The Island.”
Hurley stares at him. Go back? What?
“Come with us Hugo,” Ben urges. “And this will be over. You can stop hiding, you can stop worrying about the stories and the deceptions…If you come with me, you won’t ever have to lie again.” He smiles.
Hurley is torn.
“Please,” Ben says. “Let me help you.”
Just when he thinks Hurley is finally going to come with him, Hurley answers, “Never, Dude,” and runs out.
Ben wasn’t expecting that. He rushes after Hurley, then stops when Hurley runs outside and shouts “Hey you got me!” to the police. “That’s right, you got me!” he shouts, putting up his hands as they jump out of the car, weapons drawn. “Drop down to your knees!” One warns, and he does, telling him that he’s the murderer. “I killed four people—er, three people. However many are dead, I killed ‘em,” he quickly tells them, letting them handcuff him. “I killed ‘em all! Just get me away from here.”
As the police officers cuff him and read him his rights, Hurley glances over at Ben hovering in the shadows and smiles. “Just get me out of here.”
Ben walks off and Hurley grins. Not getting the best of him this time, Ben!

Sawyer and Juliet are tossed to the jungle floor and held at gunpoint. “I’m going to make this quite simple for you,” the leader shouts at them, gun pointed at Juliet. “You’re going to tell me what you’re doing, how many of you there are, and how you go here.”
“Let her go,” Sawyer answers, and the man shouts, “Unless you’re answering my questions, don’t speak!” Sawyer glares at him, and the soldier warns, “I want you to tell me everything or I’ll cut off her other hand.”
Juliet: What?!
Sawyer: Other?!
“The first one isn’t negotiable, it’s just to show how serious I am.” One of his fellow soldiers pulls out the machete. One man holds Juliet still as the other pulls out her arm.
“No!” Juliet tries to pull her hand back, but it’s no use.
“Hold on, just hold on, chill out!” Sawyer tries. “We’re not supposed to be here! Something’s happening to The Island, there are these flashes—”
“Do it!”
“NO!”
“Wait! A second!” Sawyer shouts angrily as Juliet struggles to free her arm. “I’ll tell you whatever you want to know just
“DO IT!”
“NO!” Juliet screams, and suddenly the guy with the machete is hit in the face. He falls back, and in everyone’s surprised hesitation, the leader is taken out. Sawyer takes the opportunity to go after the third guy, knocking him to the ground and Juliet rushes over to grab the leader’s gun. Sawyer’s taking his anger out on his guy, as the third one gets back up, head bleeding and machete drawn. Suddenly he gets his own knife to the gut. Juliet swings around, facing the darkened jungle. Who’s out there?
Slowly, Locke limps out of the trees, retrieving his knife. “James,” he nods to Sawyer then “Juliet.” They stare at him as he adds, “Nice to see ya.”

A cloaked woman with white hair is frantically writing out an equation on a chalkboard as a giant pendulum swings behind her. The chalk clacks against the board as she frantically writes, then erases what she’s just written. An old computer beeps behind her, and she leaves the chalkboard to go check it out. The pendulum continues to swing over a giant map on the floor, marking its path as it goes.
“EVENT WINDOW DETERMINED” the computer flashes, and she hastily begins to type. She glances back at the swinging pendulum, studies it a moment, then turns back to the computer, typing furiously again.
The woman gets up finally and walks across the room, opening the hatch-like door and using a flashlight to find her way to the winding metal stairs.
Upstairs in a church, Ben finishes lighting a votive candle and turns to face her. “Any luck?”
“Yes.”
“Really?”
“Yes,” she answers unrolling something at the foot of the cross. “What about you?”
“I’m having some…difficulties.”
“Well you better get busy,” she answers simply, still not looking at him. “Because you only have 70 hours.”
“What? No, no, that’s not enough time,” Ben says, his cool demeanor faltering. “I need at least—”
“What you need,” the woman interrupts, “is irrelevant.” She turns to face him. We’ve seen her before. It’s the woman who refused to sell Desmond Penny’s wedding ring. “70 hours is what you’ve got.”
“Look, I loss Reyes tonight,” Ben answers, taking a step forward. “So what happens if I can’t get them all to come back?”
She stares at him through the flickering candlelight. “Then God help us all.”
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Dun, dun, duuuuunnnnn! Yes! Is anyone else really lovin' this season? Finally we seem to be getting somewhere!
