Lost: Meet Kevin Johnson
March 22nd 2008 06:41
THE ISLAND:
Locke holds a team meeting, where he brings in Miles and Ben tells everyone that his man on the boat is no other than…Michael! Hurley and Sawyer exchange a shocked/upset look and Sawyer asks Ben, the traitor who killed two women and sold them all out so he could get off The Island Michael? Yeah, that one. Ben lets them all know that they’re not going to want to give him up, because once that happens, the freighter crew’s orders are to kill everyone on The Island.
After the meeting, Ben calls over Alex, Karl, and Rousseau to show them a map to the Temple, a sanctuary where the rest of “them” are. He orders Alex to go there because once they find out she’s his daughter, they’ll use her to get to him. Alex doesn’t want to go and asks Ben if the people coming are more dangerous then him. He says yes. Ben tells Alex that her mother will protect her. She, Karl, and Rousseau head off.
THE BOAT:
Sayid and Desmond get shocked away by an alarm and rush out on deck to find captain Gault from trying to escape. He reminds them that the rules of desertion are still in effect for everyone. He orders the deckhand to clean up the mess. Kevin Johnson (a.k.a Michael) steps up and Sayid wastes no time asking him what he’s doing there. Michael tries to tell him now is not the time, but when Sayid won’t let it drop, he finally says that he’s’ there to die.
The next morning Sayid and Desmond track Michael to the engine room and Sayid orders him to tell him how he got there. Starting from the beginning…
FLASH:
A worn down Michel (with a new haircut since we last saw him) is writing a note and looking at a photo of him holding baby Walt. When he finishes the note, he pins it to his jacket, hops in his car and drives full speed straight into a large metal container at the end of the street.
Much to his disappointment, Michael wakes up in the hospital. He’s not dead after all. A nurse comes in to tell him it’s a miracle he’s still alive. She steps forward to give him some extra blankets and…it’s Libby. Michael screams at seeing the woman he accidentally shot and killed, and suddenly wakes up in the real hospital with the real nurse. She asks him what his name is and tells him he had no ID on him, just a note pinned to his chest. He’s lucky to be alive. She asks him if she should call Walt. He says no.
Michael leaves the hospital, goes to his mom’s house, and asks to see Walt. She won’t let him, says she thought they both died in that plane crash and that now she’s the one that has to tell Walt that everything is going to be okay when he wakes up screaming in the middle of the night. He’ll barely talk to her, and he doesn’t want to see his dad. Michael asks her to tell Walt that he loves him, then starts to leave. He looks up to see Walt in a window, but Walt closes the curtains before Michael can do anything about it.
Michael then tries to pawn his watch off. The owner asks him about the Korean writing on the back, and Michael just says it was a gift. The guy offers $300 but Michael says he’s not looking for money…He wants a gun. With bullets. The man hesitates, but finally gives in.
In the alley, Michael nervously loads the gun. Just as he’s about ready to pull the trigger…a voice asks him for the time. And who should that voice belong to but…Mr. Friendly! Michael jumps up, tries to shoot him, but Friendly is too fast. He twists the gun out of the way and Michael drops it, trying to punch the other man instead. Mr. Friendly blocks the blows but Michael finds an empty champagne bottle to smash against Friendly’s head. Friendly finally grabs the gun and holds it to Michael’s head. Michael tells him to shoot him but Mr. Friendly won’t.
Michael asks him how he found him and Friendly just shakes it off. Did he really think they were going to let him go without keeping tabs on him? Friendly wonders why Michael wants to kill himself, then it dawns on him that he told Walt about killing Ana Lucia and Libby and now can’t stand the guilt and the fact that Walt knows he’s a murderer. He then tells Michael that he can try and kill himself as much as he wants but The Island won’t let him die. He then tells Michael that he has more work to do. He tells him the hotel he’s staying. He’s ready when Michael’s ready to talk.
Even more desperate, Michael goes home and puts the gun to his head. He squeezes his eyes shut, works up the nerve and—Click. Nothing happens. Hands shaking, he checks the barrel. Nothing wrong there, all six bullets still in check. He gets ready to pull the trigger again, but is interrupted by the news. On TV a reporter is telling him they’ve found the Oceanic Flight 815 wreckage…along with all 324 passengers at the bottom of the ocean.
Shocked and confused, Michael finally goes to Friendly’s hotel, where he tells him that a man named Widmore stages the entire fake plane crash because he doesn’t want people to know where the real plane ended up. Michael asks for proof and Friendly shows him pictures of a cemetery in Thailand where the 324 bodies were dug up and the purchase order for the 777. He also shows Michael the shipping logs from where the freighter dropped it all into a very deep trench—one deep enough that no one would go down to try and recover the bodies for later identification.
Friendly tells Michael that he wants him to be a spy on a freighter that Widmore has leaving from Fiji in a few days. He’ll be a deckhand and work for The Others. His name will now be Kevin Johnson. When Michael asks him why he’d want to work for them, Friendly tells him that if Michael wants to redeem himself for what he did, he better take the spy offer.
Michael insists that he can’t go back to The Island. Mr. Friendly simply states that he’s not going back to The Island. He’s going to get on the freighter so that he can kill everyone on board.
Michael shows up at the port in Fiji and meets George, Naomi, and Miles. Naomi tells him a crate has been sent to him and Michael thanks her and steps onto the boat. Miles looks up from peeling his orange and says, “You’re name’s not Kevin.” This catches Michael off-guard, but Miles just grins and tells him not to worry about it. Everyone on the boat is hiding something.
Friendly calls and asks if he got the package, and when Michael starts to get cold feet, he simply reminds him, “Claire, her baby, Sawyer, Hurley, Sun and Jin, Jack…” If he doesn’t work for The Others, then everyone on The Island dies. Michael begrudgingly says that he’s in.
Later on, Michael opens the crate sent for Kevin Johnson and finds out that it’s a bomb. Apologizing to Walt, he punches in the code, arms the bomb, and…almost..hesitates…okay. He presses the “execute” button. Instead of the explosion he was expecting, a tiny white flag pops up. Michael unrolls the piece of paper and finds two words: NOT YET.
Later, George finds Michael and tell shim he has a call from someone named Walt. He says it’s urgent. Michael rushes to the radio. “Walt?” It’s not Walt. It’s Ben. Michael’s at his wits end. Why send him a bomb that doesn’t work? Ben seems surprised. “You mean you actually activated it?” Exasperated, Michael says that he did, but he just got a note telling him:
Ben points out that there are innocent people on the freighter who have no idea who they’re working for. He points out that he may do anything to win, but he won’t kill innocent people. Michael reminds him of Ana Lucia and Libby, but Ben reminds him that Michael killed them, not Ben. Ben then tells Michael that he needs to make a list of people who are on the freighter and report back. Then he needs to disable the radio room and engines. If he does this, the boat never reaches The Island and his friends will live. Ben tells Michael that if he does this, he can consider himself one of the good guys.
FLASH:
Sayid and Desmond stare at Michael as he finishes his story. Michael tells them that yes, he is working for Ben. Sayid is not happy to hear this. He grabs Michael and forces him into the Captain’s quarters, where Sayid tells Captain Gault that Michael is not who he thinks he is. Sayid tells him that Michael was on Flight 815 with him, that Michael is the traitor one who sabotaged the radio and engines.
THE ISLAND:
Rousseau, Alex, and Karl stop for a short break on their way to the Temple. Alex and Karl are joking with each other when suddenly WHOOSH silenced bullets fly through the air, hitting Karl in the chest! Alex is shocked as she watches her boyfriend fall to the forest floor. He’s dead.
Rousseau rushes to her daughter who is still trying to help Karl, but she tells him he’s gone. They’re under attack, they need to move! She drags Alex behind a tree, tells her they’ll run on the count of three, and then tells Alex she loves her very much.
One…two…thr—BAM! Rousseau is hit! After surviving all these years on The Island Rousseau is finally killed. Alex is doubly shocked with the death of her mother, and finally jumps up and frantically tells her unseen assailant(s?) not to shoot! “I’m Ben’s daughter!”

I think this is the longest we've ever spent in one flashback without jumping into the future or back to The Island. I'm liking Desmond and Sayid on the boat and I'm still wondering why Desmond doesn't get off if Sayid does...It was interesting to see Michael back finally, and although I'd heard someone else was going to die, for some reason I didn't think of Rousseau. Saw it coming once Michael's story finally ended, but still...she'd come so close to being rescued!

PS-Just watched The X-files episode "Sunshine Days" (a.k.a. The Brady Bunch episode) again and had forgotten that "Ben" was the guest star! lol I couldn't help thinking, "Hmmm...I forgot that's what he was doing before he went to The Island. I knew he had something else weird going on!!"
