Lost is back! (6x01, 6x02 recap)
February 3rd 2010 20:09
The final season of Lost kicked off last night with a bang! Literally. When we last saw them, our favorite Island castaways were about to explode a hydrogen bomb named Jughead. This season starts exactly where the last ended--with Juliet trapped down with the bomb and hitting it with a rock until--*FLASH*
Jack wakes up on the plane. That's right, THE plane, and this time it doesn't crash. In fact, it lands safely at LAX, complete with Boone, Charlie, and all the other people who died on The Island. Sadly, it appears as if none of them are really that much better off for surviving the plane trip. Locke's still tied to his wheelchair (and missing his knives, which got lost somewhere in transit), Jack's been notified that his father's casket never made it on the plane (could he be with Locke's knives?), and after unsuccessfully trying to kill himself by swallowing his stash in the plane's bathroom, Charlie is arrested upon arriving back home. Meanwhile, Kate escapes her handler, but not the handcuffs, runs into Sawyer in the elevator upon her escape, and cuts in line in front of Hurley at the taxi line to commandeer Claire's taxi at gunpoint. Sun and Jin run into their own problems, when Jin can't understand the 'They say this watch you're carrying is a business gift' question, and gets taken into the back by security. Sun, who's still afraid of her husband and planning on escaping, denies knowing any English, and wonders what Jin's doing with a ton of cash stashed away in their suitcases. So, this is how it was supposed to be, huh?
Maybe not.

Back on The Island, Kate wakes up in a tree, ears plugged and ringing, and eventually runs into Miles, who can't hear a word she's saying. They find the exploded hatch, now long buried, and discover that they're back! (In their present time anyway.) Kate spots Jack and Sawyer laying on the floor behind her and rushes over to make sure they're okay. Jack is a little confused, but relieved they're alive. Sawyer just wants to kill Jack. It didn't work, and now Juliet is dead!
A voice calls up from beneath the buried mangled metal, and suddenly every realizes that no, Juliet is not dead! They rush over to dig her out.
Two minutes away by the Dharma van, Hurley wakes up, Sayid unconscious on the ground in front of him. Seeing that day has suddenly turned to night, Hurley starts to freak out.
"What just happened?"
Jin appears. "I found a flashlight."
"Dude, who cares? The sky just went from day to night, what happened?!"
"I think we moved through time."
Hurley just stares at him. "How do you know that?'
"White flash, headache, can't hear. Happened to me before."
They hear Sawyer shouting, and Jin rushes off to go see what happened, and as everyone else tries to figure out a way to get Juliet out, Hurley is visited by Jacob in the jungle. Yes, THAT Jacob, who is now dead, and tells Hurley that he must not let Sayid die. He tells Hurley to have Jin take him and Sayid to The Temple. "Tell him to take you to the hole in the wall where he was with the French team. Through that opening you can get into The Temple." He asks about the guitar case he gave him. Yep, Hurley still has it. Good, bring that too.
Jin rushes back in to help with Sayid. They need to get back to everyone else to use the van and it's chains to dig out Juliet. It works, Sawyer jumps down to lift the rest off her, and he and Juliet have a tearful goodbye. She asks him to kiss her, then tells him there's something very important she needs to tell him. She dies before she can tell him.
Kate offers to stay behind to help Sawyer bury Juliet, but Sawyer brushes her off. He doesn't want her help. He asks Miles to help instead, and after everyone has left and Juliet is buried, Sawyer orders Miles to tell him what Juliet was going to tell him. Miles tries to tell him that's not how it works, but Sawyer simply shoves him to the dirt and waits. Wearily, Miles does his thing and finds out what Juliet was going to say: "It worked."

Sun, Lapidus, Richard, Illana, and the rest of the second crash survivors are all waiting outside the big foot, having no idea that Ben just killed Jacob. They're also wondering who that other Locke is, seeing as how the real one, the dead one, is now laying out on the sand for all to see. As Richard tries to keep Illana's men out of The Foot, Ben comes out to tell Richard that Locke wants to talk to him. Richard takes him to see Locke's body, and Ben is shocked.
The men with the guns wrestle their way inside to see this fake Locke, and as they start shooting, Locke suddenly disappears. Where did he go? One of them spots something on the floor, and suddenly they're all attacked by the Smoke Monster. Ben huddles in a corner until it's all over, then nervously gets up.
Locke reappears and apologizes. "I'm sorry you had to see me like that."

Kate, Jack, Hurley, and Jin carry Sayid to the hole in the wall, climb in, and are on their way to The Temple, when they're attacked and taken hostages by some other Others--or, as I like to call them, the Templars--Others living at The Temple. They take them back to The Temple, where their leader orders them all to be killed. Hurley quickly shouts that Jacob sent them, and to prove it shows them the guitar case. The case is opened, to reveal a giant Egyptian symbol of life. The leader of these other Others picks up the symbol, breaks it in half and pulls out a piece of paper. He asks them a question in Japanese, which his second in command translates into "What are your names?" They all tell them him, and suddenly there are orders to get Sayid to "The Spring". Why? Because if he dies, they're all in a lot of trouble.
Kate, Jack, Hurley, and Jin follow the men carrying Sayid into The Temple to The Spring. But there's another problem. "The water isn't clear. What happened?" There is confusion among all, and after their leader cuts his hand and dips it into the water and nothing happens, he asks what happened to Sayid. Jack takes the responsibility even though he didn't shoot him ("But it's my fault."), he warns them that there are risks. His men then carry Sayid into the water, face-down, as their leader turns over a giant hourglass.
Underwater, Sayid suddenly jerks awake, and Kate, Hurley, Jack, and Jin start to worry. They're not helping him, they're drowning him! Sayid continues to struggle, and just before the hourglass empties, falls limp. The men carry him out and lay him on the ground. Their leader holds his hand out over Sayid, then stands up, saying something in Japanese.
"Your friend is dead," his second translates. They all walk out.
Unable to accept this, Jack walks over and starts doing CPR. Kate stops him. It's no use, Sayid is gone.

Miles and an unconscious Sawyer are dragged into The Temple, and Hurley is ordered to go have a private conversation with the leader and his translator. The man wants to know what Jacob said to Hurley, and when Hurley tells him, responds that Sayid was behind saving. Hurley suddenly realizes something.
"Wait a second, you're not translating anything I"m saying to him. Which means you totally understand me, dude."
"I don't like the way English tastes on my tongue," the man answers calmly, then asks in Japanese when Jacob is going to get there.
When Hurley tells him that Jacob was dead, there is suddenly a mad dash to secure the area. A dark ash-like substance is laid around the perimeter, flares are sent up, and our heroes are told, "This isn't to keep you in, it's to keep him out."

Back at the beach/Foot, Ben asks, "What are you?"
"I'm not a what, Ben, I'm a who," fake-Locke answers.
"You're the monster."
"Let's not resort to name-calling."
Ben accusing him of using him to Jacob because he couldn't do it himself, and fake-Locke tells him that the last thought that ran through Locke's head before Ben killed him was, "I don't understand." He calls it sad, but fitting. "Because when John first came to The Island, he was a very sad man, a victim. Shouting at the world for being told what he couldn't do--even though they were right. He was weak, and pathetic, and irreparably broken. But despite all that," he says, leaning forward towards Ben. "There was something admirable about him. He was the only one of them who didn't want to leave. The only one who realized how pitiful the life he left behind actually was."
Fake-Locke leans back and Ben asks him, "What do you want?"
"Well that's the great irony here Ben, because I want the one thing that John Locke didn't. I want to go home."
~*~*~
Back in The Temple, Hurley tells Sayid goodbye, letting him know that, "If you ever want to talk, I"m here." He pulls back to find Miles looking strangely at the body, and asks, "What?"
Miles looks puzzled ."Nothing."
Sawyer wakes up as Kate's washing the cut on his head and asks where they are.
"We're in a temple," she tells him.
"We got caught by the Others again?"
"Yeah. Only this time, they're protecting us. I think."
"Course they are."
Sawyer sits up and spots Jack, and Kate reminds him that Jack was just trying to help. Sawer glares at Jack and says he's not going to kill him. "He deserves to suffer on this rock like the rest of us."
~*~*~
Fake-Locke comes out to tell everyone how disappointed he is in them, then walks over to Richard, who stares at him wide-eyed.
"It's good to see you out of those chains," he tells him.
"You?"
"Me."
Fake-Locke knocks Richard out and throws him over his shoulder. He begins to walk back into the jungle.

Jack is summoned to a private conversation with the leader, and when he resists they start to struggle. Suddenly Hurley shouts, "Jack!" and everyone freezes.
Sayid sits up. "What happened?"
WHOOOHOOOO! Lost is back! Finally! And Sayid lives! I'm getting a heavy Fountain of Youth vibe from the Spring. Anyone else? Oh, and did I mention that in the parallel they-made-it-to-LAX world The Island is now at the bottom of the ocean? Or that Desmond was on the plane? The confusion, the frustration, the heartache, the questions-that-are-answered-w ith-even-more-questions--I love this!
Hurley: Look, my friend Jin is gonna be here any second so you better stop ignoring me--
Jacob: Your friend Jin isn't going to be able to see me.
Hurley: Why not?
Jacob: Because I died an hour ago.
~*~*~
Hurley: Who are you, dude?
Jacob: I'm Jacob.
~*~*~
Sawyer: What?
Miles: It worked
Sawyer: What did she want to tell me?
Miles: That's what she wanted to tell you, it worked.
Sawyer: What worked?
~*~*~
Sawyer: We got caught by the Others again?
Kate: Yeah. Only this time, they're protecting us. I think.
Sawyer: Course they are.
