Lost: Dead is Dead

April 20th 2009 22:50

Ben wakes up from being knocked out by Sun to find Locke at his side. He’s shocked, but not surprised, as that’s exactly what he thought would happen. He tells Locke that he’s come back to The Island to be judged. Locke guesses correctly that Ben still feels guilty for the death of his adopted daughter, Alex. Meanwhile, Caesar gets suspicious of Locke, tries to stop him and Ben from taking a boat, and Ben shoots him in the chest.

Once they arrive at the main Island, Ben and Locke go to the rundown Dharma barracks, where they find Sun waiting in Alex’s old room. Sun shows Ben the picture of her friends in 1977 and tells Ben that Jack’s dad told her and Lapidus to wait here for Locke. Lapidus thinks it’s crazy, seeing how Locke is dead. Ben tells them to look out the window. Locke is outside.

Lapidus decides to return to the other island to take care of his passengers, but when he arrives, he’s met by Ilana at gunpoint. She wants to know if he knows “what lies in the shadow of the statue.” Lapidus has no idea what she’s talking about.

~*~*~

In flashbacks, we find out how Ben found Alex (Widmore ordered him to kill Rousseau, but when he found the baby, he spared both their lives), and Ben taking care of her growing up with The Others. Widmore is eventually banished from The Island for breaking the rules and fathering a daughter with an outsider, and Widmore warns Ben that someday Ben will be standing right where he is now.

~*~*~

Flashforward to Ben after Alex’s death, back in the real world. We finally find out why he was all bloody and beaten up when he called Jack to get Locke’s body: He’d called Widmore to tell him he’d found Penny and was going to kill his daughter. After hanging up, Ben approaches Penny’s boat, and is surprised when Desmond looks up from picking up groceries. When Desmond asks what he’s doing there, Ben shoots him, then turns to shoot Penny. The only thing that stops him is little Charlie coming up to ask his mother what’s wrong. Ben’s hesitation causes him to be taken down by Desmond, who beats him up for trying to kill Penny. Bloody, Ben falls off the dock and into the water.

~*~*~

Back on The Island now, Ben goes into his secret room of his old house, crawls down to a muddy pond and pulls the plug, summoning the smoke monster. He goes outside to wait, but the only thing that comes out of the jungle is Locke. Locke decides they need to go find the smoke monster, and Ben tells him he only knows how to summon it, not where it actually is. Much to Ben’s surprise, Locke tells him that he knows where it is.

Locke takes Ben and to the ruins of The Others’ old temple, where he tells them they have to go underneath it. Before entering, Ben tells Sun that if she ever gets off The Island, to tell Desmond he’s sorry. She has no idea what he’s talking about.

As they’re crawling underground, Ben falls through the floor and gets separated from Locke. While Locke goes to find something to help Ben climb out, Ben surveys his strange surroundings. He walks past the hieroglyphs to what looks like a very old stone grate. The smoke monster seeps into the room, slowly swirling to encompass him.

Inside the slowly swirling smoke, Ben sees his memories of Alex. How he was supposed to kill her and Rousseau, but spared them, Alex growing up, her murder right in front of him. Slowly the smoke dissipates, and suddenly Alex appears right in front of him. A wave of emotion hits Ben, and he apologizes for what happened to her, admitting that it was all his fault. She agrees, and suddenly shoves him up against the wall, telling him that she knows he’s planning to kill Locke. She warns him he better not, that instead he has to swear to follow Locke’s lead on The Island, and Ben agrees. The smoke monster lets him live.

RICHARD: The Island chooses who The Island chooses, you know that.

~*~*~

BEN: I don’t want to go back. I want to stay. I want to be one of you.

CHARLES WIDMORE: Just because you’re living with them doesn’t mean you can’t be one of us. You should be dead, Benjamin. But this Island...it saved your life.

BEN: Who are you?

CHARLES WIDMORE: I’m Charles...Charles Widmore.

~*~*~

BEN: (seeing Locke) I knew it, I knew this would happen!

LOCKE: Then why are you so surpised to see me?

BEN: Because it’s one thing to believe it John. It’s another thing to SEE it!

LOCKE: Then why were you trying to run away to the main Island?

BEN: I broke the rules, John. I came back to The Island. I was going to answer for what I’d done. I was going back...to be judged.

LOCKE: Judged? By whom?

BEN: Well, John, we don’t even have a word for it. But I believe you call it “The Monster”.

~*~*~

CAESAR: While you were out cold? He was watching over you. He said you killed him.

BEN: (looks at Locke) I killed him? Really? Cause he looks fine to me.

~*~*~

BEN: Don’t! Don’t do it!

ROUSSEAU: You’re the one who infected us, aren’t you?

~*~*~

ROUSSEAU: Don’t take my Alex!

BEN: Do you want your baby to live?

ROUSSEAU: Why are you taking her?

(Ben shoots at the floor)

BEN: Be grateful you’re still alive. Now you listen to me. If you try to follow me, or if you ever come looking for me, I’ll kill you. And if you want your child to live? Every time you hear whispers, you run the other way.

~*~*~

LOCKE: What’s that?

BEN: (looking at picture of him and Alex) Just something sentimental.

~*~*~

BEN: Was there something that you wanted, John?

LOCKE: Well Ben, I was hoping that you and I could talk about the elephant in the room.

BEN: I assume you’re referring to the fact that I killed you.

LOCKE: Yeah.

~*~*~

LOCKE: If all I had to do was die, Ben, then why did you kill me?

BEN: You had critical information that would have died with you. And once you’d given it to me…well I just didn’t have time to talk you back into hanging yourself, so I took a shortcut.

~*~*~

BEN: And that’s why I did it. Because it was in the best interest of The Island.

LOCKE: I was just hoping for an apology.

~*~*~

LOCKE: If everything you’ve done has been in the best interest of The Island? Then I’m sure The Monster will understand.

~*~*~

CAESAR: I’m sorry, but I’m calling the shots here, and I say you are not taking anything. What you are going to do is sit down and tell us how you know so much about this island, my friend.

LOCKE: You’re in the habit of calling people “my friend”, but I don’t think you mean it.

~*~*~

BEN: (shoots Caesar, turns to the other guys) This gentleman and I are taking a boat. Does anyone else have a problem with that? (They all back away, he tosses gun to Locke) Consider that my apology.

~*~*~

BEN: Home sweet home.

LOCKE: Looks like we’re not the only ones who decided to tie-up here.

BEN: That would be Sun and Lapidus. I showed them where the boats were, and Sun thanked me by smashing me on the head with a paddle.

~*~*~

LOCKE: No sense in me dying twice, right?

~*~*~

LOCKE: I don’t think you care about rules.

BEN: Then what do I want to be judged for, John?

LOCKE: For killing your daughter.

~*~*~

CHARLES WIDMORE: Well, did you do it?

BEN: We had a…complication.

(Baby Alex starts crying)

CHARLES WIDMORE: (looks up from his dinner by the camp fire) I’m sorry, is that a baby?

~*~*~

CHARLES WIDMORE
: You might find this difficult to understand, Benjamin. Every decision I’ve made has been about protecting this island.

BEN: Is killing this baby what Jacob wants?

CHARLES WIDMORE:…

BEN: Then here she is. (offers her over) You do it.

(Widmore walks away)

~*~*~

BEN: You don’t have the first idea what this island wants.

LOCKE: Are you sure about that?

(a light comes on in the house)

LOCKE: That was your house, wasn’t it?

BEN: Yes, and that’s Alex’s room.

LOCKE: Well I suppose you better go over there and check it out.

~*~*~

BEN: (opening door, surprised) Sun?

LAPIDUS: (runs in) What are you doing here?

BEN: This used to be my house. I saw a light turn on, what are the two of you doing in here?

(Lapidus hands him the picture of everyone in the 70s)

SUN: That was taken in 1977.

BEN: Are you trying to tell me that your friends were in the Dharma Initiative?

SUN: You don’t know about this?

BEN: Of course not. Where did you get this, who gave this to you?

LAPIDUS: We met some crazy old man outside.

SUN: He said his name was Christian. He told us to come in here and wait.

BEN: Wait for what?

SUN: He said if I ever wanted to see my husband again? I had to wait here for John Locke.

LAPIDUS: But considering he’s dead, we ain’t holdin’ our breath.

BEN: Well you might want to look outside.

(They look out the window, Locke waves)

~*~*~

SUN: What you’re saying it’s—impossible.

LOCKE: But here I am. I don’t know how, I don’t know why, but I’m sure there’s a very good reason for it.

LAPIDUS: As long as the dead guy says there’s a reason, then I guess everything’s gonna be just peachy. Forget about the fact that the rest of your people are supposedly 30 years ago, now the only ones who are here to help us are a murderer and a guy who can’t seem to remember how the hell he got out of a coffin!

~*~*~

SUN: If there’s any chance of finding my husband, then I have to stay.

~*~*~

SUN: Alright, how do we find Jin?

~*~*~

(after going down in his secret tunnel and draining the water to summon the smoke monster)

BEN: (to the hole) I’ll be outside.

~*~*~

CHARLES WIDMORE: And what makes you think you deserve to take what’s mine?

BEN: Because I won’t be selfish. Because I’ll sacrifice anything to protect this island.

CHARLES WIDMORE: You wouldn’t sacrifice Alex.

BEN: You’re the one who wanted her dead, Charles, not The Island.

CHARLES WIDMORE: I hope you’re right Benjamin. Because if you aren’t and it is The Island who wants her dead, she’ll be dead. And one day, you’ll be standing where I’m standing now. You’ll be the one being banished, and then you’ll finally realize that you cannot fight the inevitable…I’ll be seeing you, boy.

~*~*~

SUN: So you knew? This would happen to Locke if we brought him back here?

BEN: Sun, I had no idea what would happen. I’ve seen this island do miraculous things, I’ve seen it heal the sick, but never once has it done anything like this. Dead is dead. You don’t get to come back from that, not even here…So the fact that John Locke is walking around this island? It scares the living hell out me.

~*~*~

BEN: You may want to go inside.

SUN: Why?

BEN: Because what’s about to come out of that jungle is something I can’t control.

~*~*~

LOCKE: Well if it’s not gonna to come to us, I suppose we’ll have to go to it.

BEN: It doesn’t work that way. I only know how to summon it, I don’t know where it actually is.

LOCKE: I do.

~*~*~

LOCKE: It’s weird for me too.

SUN: Excuse me?

LOCKE: I realize how strange this all is. Me, here…but I assure you Sun, I’m the same man I’ve always been.

(Ben walks in)

LOCKE: You ready?

BEN: Lead the way.

~*~*~

BEN: (on phone) I’m going back to The Island today.

CHARLES WIDMORE: The Island won’t let you come back, trust me. I’ve spent almost 20 years trying to return.

BEN: Well, where you failed I’m going to succeed. Just as soon as I do one thing.

CHARLES WIDMORE: And what’s that, Benjamin?

BEN: Kill your daughter.

~*~*~

BEN: May I ask you a question, John?

LOCKE: Shoot.

BEN: How is it that you know where you’re going?

LOCKE: I just know.

BEN: I mean how does that work, exactly?

LOCKE: How does what work?

BEN: The knowing. I mean, did it come upon you gradually, or did you wake up one morning suddenly understanding the mysteries of the universe?

LOCKE: You don’t like this, do you?

BEN: What?

LOCKE: Having to ask questions that you don’t know the answers to. Blindly following someone in the hopes that they’ll lead you to whatever it is you’re lookin’ for.

BEN: No John, I don’t like it at all.

LOCKE: Well, now you know what it was like to be me.

~*~*~

SUN: What is it?

BEN: It’s the wall around our temple.

SUN: What temple?

BEN: It’s about a half a mile from here. We built this wall to keep people like the two of you from ever seeing it.

LOCKE: We’re not goin’ into your temple, Ben. (walks up to hole) We’re going under it.

~*~*~

BEN: I need to ask a favor of you, Sun. If you ever get off this Island, find Desmond Hume for me. Tell him I said I was sorry.

SUN: Sorry for what?

BEN: He’ll know…

~*~*~

DESMOND: Hey, what are you doin’ here?

(Ben swings around, looks at him wondering the same thing, then shoots Desmond.)

PENNY: Desmond? Desmond? Des!

BEN: Don’t move. Not another word. (walks up, gun pointed) Hello Penelope, my name is Benjamin Linus. I’m sorry that you’re caught up in the middle of this thing, but your father—

PENNY: My father and I have absolutely no relationship whatsoever, so whatever—

BEN: You’re father is a really terrible human being! He’s responsible for the killing of my daughter, that’s why I’m here.

~*~*~

LAPIDUS: Ilana, what’s going on?

ILANA: (cocks gun) What lies in the shadow of the statue?

LAPIDUS: What?

GUY: Answer the question.

ILANA: What lies in the shadow of the statue?

LAPIDUS: I have no idea what—(BAM! She knocks him out)

ILANA: Get everyone else. Tell them it’s time.

~*~*~

BEN: You know, you were right.

LOCKE: About what?

BEN: Why I need to be judged…When Charles Widmore’s men came, they gave me a choice: either leave The Island or let my daughter die. All I had to do was walk out of the house and go with them…But I wouldn’t do it. So you were right, John. I did kill Alex. And now I have to answer for that.

~*~*~

BEN: I’ll meet you outside, if I live.

~*~*~

ALEX: Daddy?

BEN: (shocked) Alex?

ALEX: Hi, Dad.

BEN: Oh, Alex…I’m so so sorry…It was—all my fault.

ALEX: I know.

~*~*~

ALEX: I know that you’re already planning on killing John Locke, and I want you do know that if you so much as touch him, I will hunt you down and destroy you. You will listen to every word that John Locke says, and you will follow his every order, do you understand?

(Ben nods, she slams him against the wall)

ALEX: SAY IT! Say you’ll follow him!

BEN: Yes I will, I’ll follow him, I swear.

(The manifestation of Alex shoves him back one more time then disappears)

LOCKE: Ben? Ben! (lowering down a vine) Ben?

(Ben walks up to the hole)

LOCKE: What happened?

BEN: It let me live.

Ben wakes up to find Locke is alive.

Ben seals Alex as a baby

Ben banishes Widmore

This is why Ben was all bloody when he called Jack to go pick up Locke’s body:

THOUGHTS

Great episode! We finally get to see the softer side of Ben, and I knew he’d gone to try and kill Penny when I first saw him at that dock, but I had no idea it was Desmond who beat him up. Whoohoo! Go Desmond! I’m just glad whatever was in that grocery bag deflected the bullet! Good to see Locke is his usual slightly creepy self even after spending all that time being dead. Looks like what’s dead isn’t always dead after all.
