Lost: Because You Left Recap

January 25th 2009 01:13

Lost is back, and last night’s theme seems to be “When am I?”

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

8:15 AM

A dark-haired man reaches over and hits his alarm. A baby starts crying. His wife leans over and kisses his cheek, telling him that the baby’s awake and it’s his turn. The man gets up and puts a record on. The music begins as he makes the bottle, rocks the baby while he feeds it, goes to get ready

“If you can’t make a record…if you can’t make a record, if you can’t make a—” He stops the skipping record and heads out.

The man walks into work, insists he doesn’t need a script, then sits down in front of the camera and says, "Hello, I'm Dr. Marvin Candle, and this is the orientation film for station two, the Arrow."

That’s right the man is Dharma’s own Dr. Marvin Candle (a.k.a. Mark Wickmund, a.k.a. Pierre Chang), and we’re back in The Island Dharma times.

Suddenly Dr. Chang is interrupted with news that there’s a problem at the Orchid station construction site. Chang suddenly forgets about the filming and quickly follows the man down into the underground construction site. When he asks what happened, the construction man tells him that his team was digging through the rock like they were instructed to do, when all of a sudden the drill melted and the operator grabbed his head and collapsed to the ground.

The man shows him an image of what’s behind the rock: The wheel we saw Ben using to move The Island. He nods to the small holes drilled into the rock and asks what Chang wants them to do. Chang insists that they need to stop the drilling right away. Why?

He believes that what they’re digging towards is an almost “limitless energy”, and they can’t drill even a centimeter further without fear of disrupting that energy. He hopes to one day harness the energy and use it to manipulate time.

Chang orders everyone to stop working and leaves, bumping into one of the Dharma workers. The man’s boss turns to scoff about the craziness of Chang’s orders. Time travel? Really? The guy laughs it off as an insane thought. Daniel Faraday, however, does not.

Jack and Ben are right where we last left them, staring down at Locke’s coffin in the funeral home. Ben tells him they need to get Locke in the van, and when Jack asks where they’re taking him, he just tells him they’ll worry about that after they get Hurley. Jack tells Ben that Hurley’s in a mental institution, and Ben points out that should make him easier to recruit than the rest of his friends. Jack’s response? “They’re not my friends anymore.”

“Oh that’s the spirit…”

“How did we get here?” a rundown, bearded Jack asks wearily. “How did it all happen?”

“It happened because you left, Jack,” Ben answers. “Now let’s get started, shall we?” He slams Locke’s coffin closed.

~*~*~

Later on in a hotel room bathroom, Jack finally shaves off that beard. After they get Hurley, then what? Ben tells him they then get Sun, Sayid, and Kate of course.

“I don’t see that happening,” Jack replies dryly. He walks in and sits down on the edge of the bed, asking when was the last time Ben saw Locke.

“On The Island,” Ben answers, continuing to pack. “In The Orchid Station below The Greenhouse. I told him I was sorry for making his life so miserable, and then he left.” Jack doesn’t say anything, and Ben studies him a second, then says, “So obviously John’s visit to you made an impression. What did he say to you to make you a believer?”

Jack stares at him a second, then answers, “Sawyer, Juliet, everyone from the boat…Everyone we left behind, John said that they died too if I didn’t come back.”

Ben seems almost surprised as he asks, “Did he tell you what happened to them after The Island moved?”

Jack shakes his head. “No…no he didn’t.”

“Well then I guess we’ll never know…”

~*~*~

Three Years Earlier

We’re back to Ben turning the big frozen wheel. Outside in the forest, The Others and Locke look up. On the beach, Juliet and Sawyer look up. Where’s that noise coming from? Even everyone on Daniel’s raft and the helicopter can hear it. Everyone continues to look around, trying to find out where the noise is coming from.

The wheel begins to light up as Ben reaches the other side and…

FLAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSHHHHH A whiteout of bright light.

Locke lowers his hand, and finds himself in the rain. Alone.

“Richard?” He looks around. “Richard? Anyone?” No one answers. “Anyone!?”

Out on the ocean, the people in Daniel’s raft look around, confused. “What happened? What was that noise?”

Daniel stares at The Island, muttering, “We must have been inside the radius…”

On the beach, Sawyer and Juliet have no idea what to think. Sawyer glances out at the water, now empty. “Where’s the freighter?”

Juliet turns to see where the smoking boat used to be is now completely clear. “Maybe it went down.”

“Nuh-uh, no way. A minute ago that boat was coughing smoke, and now there’s just nothing?”

“What about the helicopter?”

“It was headin’ for that boat.”

Suddenly, Bernard stumbles out of the forest shouting for his wife. “Rose? Rose!” Juliet and Sawyer run over to join him. He asks if they’ve seen Rose. No. Suddenly, Rose comes running out of the trees shouting for her husband. They’re all relieved to see each other, and Bernard asks where she was. Over by the church. She asks what that light and noise was, and Sawyer tells them both to calm down. “There’s no need to panic. We’ll just go back to camp, figure this—“

“Calm down? No need to panic?” Bernard interrupts. “We can’t go back to the camp.” Why? “There is no camp.”

~*~*~

Bernard takes them all back to where the camp used to be. The castaways are all wandering around, completely confused. Where did all their stuff go? Bernard points out that “Everything but us, all of it” is just gone.

“It’s not gone,” Daniel says, joining the group. They all turn to look at him like he’s crazy. Charlotte runs over to give him a hug, and he tells her that they were on their way to the freighter when it happened.

“What do you mean the camp’s not gone?” Sawyer asks, irritated. Suddenly he realizes something. “Who the hell are you anyway?”

“That’s Dan,” Miles explains. “He’s our physicist.”

“And we don’t have time,” Daniel says hastily. To Juliet, he adds, “I need you to take me to something man-made. Something that built, any kind of a landmark.”

“There’s a Dharma station 15 minutes away from here,” Juliet answers, and Sawyer asks, “You mean The Hatch? The one we blew up?”

“That’s perfect, we should get moving before it happens again, okay?” Daniel starts to go, but Sawyer stops him.

“Before what happens again?“ Sawyer asks. “And why is our camp gone?”

“Your camp isn’t gone,” Daniel answers. “It hasn’t been built yet.”

~*~*~

Kate is at home making breakfast for Aaron, who is watching cartoons as he eats. The doorbell rings, and Kate tells him she’ll be right back. She opens the door to two men in suits, who would like to come in for a moment. She tells them they can stand outside and tell her what they want. Alright then, they want a blood sample from both her and Aaron.

“Why?”

“To determine your relationship to the child.”

When they refuse to tell her the name of their client, Kate orders them off her property. They warn her that they’ll just come back with the sheriff.

“Then come back with The Sheriff.” Kate slams the door on them, then turns around, looks at Aaron, and immediately goes to pack. She throws clothes into a bag, grabs some money and her gun from the closet and, when Aaron asks, “Where you goin’, Mommy?”, tells him, “We’re goin’ on vacation, baby.”

She picks him up, grabs her bag, and walks downstairs. She grabs her keys and turns to look once more at her house. “Say bye-bye, Baby.”

She shuts the door behind them.

~*~*~

Back on The Island, Sawyer, Juliet, Daniel, Miles, and Neil are walking through the jungle towards The Hatch.

Juliet asks Sawyer why he jumped off the helicopter, and he answers, “I told you, we were runnin’ out of gas. I wanted to make sure she—I wanted to make sure they got back to the boat. Don’t matter now anyway, does it?”

“Excuse me,” Daniel interrupts, passing them. “I really need the two of you to pick up the pace, okay? Thanks.”

“First things first,” Sawyer calls after him. “Give me your shirt.”

“My shirt.” Daniel stares at him like he’s crazy.

“Yeah.”

“I *really* think we have far more pressing matters than me giving you a shirt. Why don’t we just keep moving, okay?”

Sawyer thinks a time-out would be better. He orders Daniel to tell them what’s going on, and Daniel just argues, “How ‘bout you trust me?”

“Trust you? I don’t know you!”

“We really do not have time for me to try to explain!” Daniel argues. “You have no idea how difficult that would be for me to explain this. This phenomenon to a quantum physicist? That would be difficult, so for me to try to explain whatever’s happeni—”

*smack!* Sawyer slaps him and both Juliet and Charlotte rush in to stop a fight from breaking out.

“Oy! What the bloody hell do you think you’re doing?” Charlotte asks Sawyer, upset.

“Shut it, Ginger,” Sawyer cuts back. “Or you’re getting’ one too.” Sawyer’s had enough. Frustrated, he turns to Daniel. “Now talk.”

“ The Island…” Daniel begins. “Think of The Island like a record spinning on a turntable. Only now, that record is skipping. Whatever Ben Linus did down in that Orchid station, I think it may have…dislodged us.”

“Dislodged us from what?” Miles asks.

“Time.”

Everybody thinks about this a moment, then Juliet says, “So that’s why our camp is gone? The Island is moving through time?”

“Either The Island is,” Daniel answers. “Or we are.”

“What?” Sawyer asks, still skeptical.

“And it’s just as likely,” Daniel tells Juliet, ignoring Sawyer, “That we are moving, your people and us.” Suddenly Daniel asks if everyone in their group is accounted for, and Juliet looks at Sawyer, who sighs.

“Not everyone.” At Juliet’s look, Sawyer answers, “Locke…”

~*~*~

Locke continues to climb and walk through the forest, all by himself. As he’s walking up a tall grass hill, he suddenly hears what sounds like an engine. He glances around and ducks just in time to avoid being hit by a crashing plane. It’s a small plane we’ve seen before…

The plane crashes into a tree, and Locke suddenly spots something on the ground. He goes over to pick up the hallow statue of Mary…

Locke walks back through the jungle to find the newly crashed plane of Mr. Echo’s brother.

“Is anyone there?” He calls. “Hello?” No answer. “Hello!”

When he still gets no answer, Locke begins to climb the big tree towards the yellow plane. Suddenly, someone starts shooting at him from the trees.

“Hey!”

More shots. Locke gets hit in the leg and falls to the ground, landing on his back with the wind knocked out of him. As he struggles to sit up, a man with a gun walks into the opening. Locke looks up to see a familiar face. Ethan.

“How many other’s on board?” Ethan asks.

“You don’t understand,” Locke quickly answers. “I wasn’t on that plane.”

“Wrong answer.” Ethan readies the rifle, and Locke quickly explains that he knows him. It’s not going to make any sense, but he knows him, his name. “Your name is Ethan,” Locke says, and Ethan stares at him, confused.

“Who are you?”

“My name is John Locke. I know this is gonna be hard to understand,” Locke says breathlessly, trying to get him to lower the weapon. “But Ben Linus appointed me as your leader.”

“That is the most ridiculous thing I have heard,” Ethan answers. “Goodbye John Locke.”

Ethan raises the rifle and Locke can only cringe in anticipation of the shot as the sky suddenly starts to brighten again. The light grows brighter and brighter until—

Suddenly it’s night. Locke lowers his arms and looks around. Ethan is nowhere to be found.

~*~*~

Out in the jungle, Sawyer and company stare up at the darkened sky.

“Great,” Sawyer mutters, turning to Daniel. “So when are we now wiz kid?”

“We’re either in the past…or we’re in the future.”

~*~*~

Sun steps off the escalator at the airport and hangs up her phone when nobody picks up. She walks up to the desk, hands over her passport, and when her name comes up on the computer, the woman asks if she’ll wait a moment. Sun nods.

Sun is taken to another room and locked in as a guard stands outside.

“Hey, where you go—” Sun goes over to try the door. It’s locked. “Open this door.” She bangs on it. “Open this door!”

“Save your breath,” Charles Widmore says, stepping up behind her. “They only do what I tell them to do.”

“You.” Sun stares at him. “You had be brought in here? Why?”

“Because you had the audacity to approach me in broad daylight, in front of my business associates. In public! Why did I have you brought here? Because you showed me no respect,” Widmore answers, warning, “I will be respected, Sun.”

“Fair enough.” She walks over to the table and sits down.

“Since you seem to be worried about your plane, I’ll get right down to business.” He sits down across from her. “You mentioned that you and I had common interests.” She silently stares at him, and he adds, “Why don’t you tell me exactly what they might be.”

Sun stares at him, then answers simply, “To kill Benjamin Linus.”

~*~*~

Back at the hotel with Ben and Jack, Ben is watching the news, where the reporter is talking about a victim that was found in his car, shot on the grounds of the same mental hospital the Hurley was in.

“Okay,” Jack says, exiting the bathroom, now dressed and ready to go. “Let’s go get him.”

Ben continues to stare at the TV as a picture of Hurley shows up on the screen as the murder suspect. Ben clicks off the TV. “Well, looks like we have a change of plan.”

~*~*~

Hurley and Sayid are sitting in a car at night.

“Here she comes,” Hurley says hastily. “Right now.”

They both look up as a girl brings them their food. “Here’s your order, sir.” She hands over the fast food bag, and Sayid pays her. “Keep the change.”

“Thank you.” The girl walks off.

“Awesome,” Hurley says, quickly digging into his food. He opens the bag and turns to Sayid. “You want a fry?”

“No thank you.”

“You know, maybe if you ate more comfort food you wouldn’t have to go around shooting people.” Hurley pops the fry into his own mouth as Sayid starts the car.

They drive to an apartment complex and get out, heading up to the rooms.

“So that dude you popped outside Santa Rosa?” Hurley asks. “Who was he?”

“I don’t care,” Sayid answers. “He was armed and he was watching you. That made him an enemy.”

“You think he was gonna kill me?”

“I’m not taking any risks after Benthem died.”

“You mean Locke.”

“Yes, I mean Locke.”

Sayid starts up the stairs, and Hurley mutters, “I need a cool codename.”

They round another balcony corner, and Hurley asks, “So when did you become so paranoid?”

As Hurley eats his hamburger, Sayid answers, “If you had spent the last two years doing the things I was doing, you’d be paranoid too.”

“Oh yeah? Paranoid, like what? What kind of things?”

Sayid stops walking and looks at Hurley. “I was working for Benjamin Linus.”

“Wait…” Hurley asks, confused. “He’s on our side now?”

“Listen to me, Hurley,” Sayid answers, taking his friend’s shoulder. “If you ever have the misfortune of running into him, whatever he tells you? Just do the opposite.”

Sayid turns to open the door, then stops, noticing the piece of tape he’s placed at the top of door is broken. He quickly pushes Hurley back. “Wait here.”

Sayid pulls out his gun, kicking the door open. The man waiting behind the door kicks the gun out of his hand, and when he comes at Sayid, Sayid ducks just in time, throwing the man off the balcony behind him. Hurley watches in shock as the man falls to his death, and another one comes rushing out to attack Sayid.

Sayid fights him off, runs inside, throws a lamp at the man trying to steady his gun again, and jumps over a kitchen counter to get at the gun he has taped under a cabinet. The man shoots darts at him, one of which catches Sayid in the neck. He pulls it out, swaying as the heavy duty dart clatters into the sink.

Sayid leans over the sink, another dart in his back, his eyes closing. The man slowly approaches to make sure he’s out, and Sayid jumps up, fighting him until the man falls on the open dish washer, killing himself.

Outisde, a bunch of guys run over to check the dead guy on the asphalt, just as Hurley picks up Sayid’s gun. They spot him on the balcony—“that guy’s got a gun!”—one of them snaps a picture with his phone of Hurley holding the gun before they all run off.

Realizing how it all looks too late, Hurley rushes inside to check on Sayid, who has managed to pull out the dart in his back. Hurley stops short when he sees the dead man on the dishwasher. “Whoa.” He pulls Sayid to his feet. “You alright?”

“Get me to the car,” Sayid says, fading fast.

“Dude—” Hurley helps him walk, again glancing down at the dead man. “Oh man, I thought this was supposed to be a safehouse! We never should have left that island!”

~*~*~

Back on The Island, it’s still night and Charlotte and Miles take up the back of the group.

“Do you think he’s looking for us?” Charlotte asks.

“Who?” Miles asks, brushing more jungle plants out of his way.

“Widmore.”

“Took him like 20 years to find this place the first time,” he answers dryly. “I’ll start holding my breath now.”

“Over here!” Juliet calls, pointing to the spot where The Hatch used to be.

“Is this The Hatch?” Daniel asks, staring at the big hole in the ground.

“It was,” Sawyer answers. “Blown up, just like we left it.”

“Okay,” Daniel says, crouching down by the hole to think. “So when we are now? It’s now after you and your people crashed on The Island.”

“You’re saying our camp is back on the beach again then?” Sawyer asks.

“It’s possible, yeah.”

“Good, I’m goin’ back.”

Daniel jumps up. “Hey, no no. “ Sawyer stops and Daniel explains, “It’s pointless.”

“More pointless than starin’ at a hole in the ground?”

“We don’t know when the next flash is coming. By the time you get back to the beach, the camp could be gone again.”

“Yeah well, what if it ain’t?” Sawyer asks. “What if the helicopter hasn’t even taken off yet?”

He’s got a point. “We could warn them,” Juliet agrees. “Stop them from ever flying to that boat.”

Daniel shakes his head sadly. “That’s not the way it works.”

“Who says?”

“You cannot change anything,” Daniel tries to explain. “You can’t. Even if you tried to, it wouldn’t work.”

“Why not?” Sawyer asks, irritated again.

“It—time,” Daniel answers, “It’s like a string. Alight? We can move forward on that string, we can move in reverse, but we CANNOT, ever create a new string. If we try to do ANYTHING different we will fail. Every time. Whatever happened? Happened.”

“How do you know so much about this, Danny Boy?”

Daniel sighs and takes off his backpack. “I know about this,” he says, pulling out a book. “Because I’ve spent my entire adult life studying space-time. I know all this because this journal contains everything I’ve ever learned about the Dharma Initiative. This—” he clutches the book “—Is why I’m here. I KNOW what’s happening.”

“So how can we stop it?”

“We can’t stop it.”

“Then who can?”

~*~*~

Locke is still lying on the ground on his back. He manages to get to his feet and starts hopping through the jungle towards the abandoned plane. Grunting in pain, he climbs inside, spots one of the heroine-filled Mary statues and the skeleton of Mr. Echo’s brother, and rips off one of the plane’s seatbelts.

He sits down to start to use the belt as a tourniquet on his leg, when he suddenly spots a torch through the darkness. Whoever is carrying it is coming his way.

Locke pulls out his knife and waits.

The person’s footsteps crunch through the jungle until the person finally walks into sight.

“Richard?”

Richard smiles. “Hey John.”

As Richard walks over and sets his torch in the soft dirt, Locke asks him what’s going on.

“What’s happening is you’re bleeding to death.” Richard leans down and rips Locke’s pant leg to get the bullet out. Locke wants to know how he knew there was a bullet in his leg, and Richard just answers, “Because you told me there was, John.”

“No, no I didn’t.”

“Well you will.” Richard gets out a first aid kit and puts on his glasses.

“It was Ethan who shot me.”

“Well, what comes around goes around,” Richard answers, pouring disinfectant onto Locke’s bullet wound. Locke grunts against the pain and asks, “WHEN am I?”

“Well John, that’s all relative,” Richard answers, getting ready to fish out the bullet.

“Wait,” Locke interrupts. “The noise, when the sky lit up, where did you go?”

“I didn’t go anywhere John, you went,” Richard answers then turns back his leg. “Alright this is gonna hurt. It’ll be a lot worse if you move, okay? Hold still.”

Locke holds his breath, squeezing his eyes shut and gripping Richard’s shoulder as Richard fishes the bullet out with his metal forceps. He holds the bullet up. “All done.”

“I don’t understand,” Locke says breathlessly. “How—how did you know that I was here? How did you know where to find me?”

Richard looks up from his first aid kit. “I wish that I had time to explain it John, but you’re going to be moving on soon, and we need to go over a couple of things before—”

“Moving on?” Locke interrupts, confused and still in pain. Before he can continue to ask question, Richard gets back to his leg. “Argh!”

“Sorry.” Richard begins to patch him up and tells him to keep cleaning the wound every and to try and keep as much weight off his leg as possible. “The Island will do the rest.”

Locke still doesn’t understand.

“The second thing—”

“I don’t—”

“Pay attention,” Richard interrupts. “The next time we see each other, I’m not gonna recognize you, alright?” He pulls something from his pocket. “You give me this.”

Locke stares at his hand. “What is this?”

“It’s a compass.”

“What does it do?”

“It points North, John,” Richard answers, quickly adding, “Look I wish I had more time to be sensitive about this because it’s a lot to swallow, but—you need to know it in order to do what you gotta do, so I’m just gonna say it, okay?” Locke looks at him, and Richard quickly says, “The only way to save The Island, John, is to get your people back here, the ones who left.”
“Jack? Kate?” Locke asks. “The chopper was headed for the boat, the boat—”

“They’re fine, John. And they’re already home,” Richard quickly assures. “So you have to convince them to come back.”

Locke is totally confused. “How—how am I supposed to do that?”

Richard stares at him and finally answers, “You’re gonna have to die, John.”

As Locke is trying to take this all in, there’s another white flash. Locke looks around, up at the bright morning sky, the peaceful jungle, the smoking plane above him, and wearily lowers his hand. Suddenly he feels the compass in his palm and lifts it up. He stares down at his bloody hand and the compass. He’s going to have to die?

~*~*~

Nighttime. In the jungle everyone is still staring down at the remains of The Hatch.

“So what was this thing before you guys blew it up?” Miles asks.

“A Dharma Station,” Juliet answers.

“For what?”

“There was a man named Desmond living down in it,” She answers. “He was pushing a button every 108 minutes to save the world.”

Miles doesn’t quite know what to think of that. “Really…”

Juliet lets out a soft, mirthless laugh. “Yeah, really.”

Charlotte is just as confused. Suddenly the loud noise, a mix between an electronic hiss and thousands of cicadas chirping, grows louder and louder until—FLASH!

They’re back in the day again. Juliet is the first to notice the hole has been filled. She goes over and unburies the metal Hatch door. She looks up at Sawyer. “I guess you guys haven’t found it yet.”

Sawyer stares down at The Hatch a moment, then stomps off.

“Hey,” Miles calls after him. “Where’re you going?”

“Back door,” Sawyer grunts back. “I’m getting’ some supplies.” He walks off into the jungle before anyone can stop him.

“James wait,” Daniel hurries after him. “Not a good idea.”

“The sky can flash all it wants, but I ain’t startin’ over, Dilbert,” Sawyer says, continuing to stomp his way through the brush. “I ain’t rubbin’ two sticks together to start a fire, and I ain’t huntin’ no damn boar! There’s Dharma food, beer, and clothing in there. And I’m gettin’ Desmond to let me in ONE WAY or another!”

“That’s not gonna work, my friend,” Daniel says, still following him.

“Yeah?” Sawyer says, not bothering to turn around. “And why not?”

“Because Desmond didn’t know you when he first came out of there. That means you’ve never met,” Daniel explains. “Which means, you CAN’T meet.”

“This would all be fascinating if I was listening to you.” Sawyer continues to push through the foliage towards the door to The Hatch.

“How do you even know that Desmond is in there?” Daniel asks. “Think about it, it could be anybody.”

Sawyer finally stops trudging, and swings around to face him. “I don’t care who’s in there.”

“Wait—”

Too late. Sawyer’s already banging on the door, insisting to be let in. Daniel continues to insist that it won’t work, and Sawyer just argues, “Of course it will.” He bangs on the door again. “You open up! It’s the Ghost of Christmas Future!”

Sawyer continues to bang on the door, getting more and more angry, and Daniel just keeps telling him that no one is going to open the door. By now, Juliet, Miles, and Charlotte have joined them.

“OPEN THE DAMN DOOR! OPEN THE DOOR!” Sawyer shouts, and Daniel tries to get him to understand that, “You’re wasting your time—”

“I KNOW YOU CAN HEAR ME!” Sawyer shouts at the door.

Daniel can’t take it anymore. Very specifically, he enunciates, “If it didn’t happen, it CAN’T happen!”

Sawyer is rattling the handle, banging on the door to be let in, and Daniel finally shouts, “YOU CAN’T CHANGE THE PAST, JAMES!”

Sawyer finally swings around and grabs Daniel by the collar, furious. “Everybody I care about just blew up on your damn boat. I know what I can’t change.”

Daniel nods and Juliet steps forward. “We should get back to the beach. It’s been a long day.”

Sawyer finally backs down. He stares at them all a moment, still furious, then wordlessly starts to head back to the beach.

“Why are we going back to the beach,” Miles asks. “If there’s nothing to go back to?”

“So stay here,” Juliet answers, following Sawyer.

Miles looks at Charlotte and Daniel. “That chick likes me.” He turns and follows Juliet and Sawyer.

Daniel suddenly notices that Charlotte’s nose is bleeding, and is suddenly alarmed. She wipes the blood away, commenting that she hasn’t had a nosebleed since she was little. She suddenly notices Daniel’s very concerned look. “Dan, I’m fine.”

Realizing how he must look, Daniel quickly shakes it off. “What? Oh no, no, no, no, what? Of course you’re fine, I’m—I was just—The sight of blood is um—” he backs up.

“Well it’s a good thing you’re a physicist, then isn’t it? Shall we?” She starts to head after everyone else.

He tells her he just remembered he left his pack back at The Hatch, so he’s going to go back and get it. She might as well get caught up with everyone else, he’ll be right behind them.

“Don’t dillydally.”

“Uh, I wouldn’t think of it.”

She chuckles and walks away.

Daniel rushes back to his pack and grabs his journal. He hastily flips through it until he finds the page he’s looking for and stops.

~*~*~

Daniel bangs on the backdoor of The Hatch then backs up slowly, his backpack back on his back again. “Please let this work,” he whispers to himself. “Please, let this work…please…let this work…” He steps forward and knocks again, and suddenly the door busts open, gun pointed at his face.

“Whoa, whoa, whoa! Don’t shoot.” Daniel holds up his hands at a yellow-quarantine-suit-wearing Desmond.

Gun still aimed, Desmond answers, “Then you best explain why you’ve bangin’ on my door for the last 20 minutes, brother.”

Daniel sighs in relief. “Desmond.”

Desmond looks at him suspiciously. “Are you him?”

“Him? Who?”

“My replacement.”

“No, I’m not,” Daniel says, carefully, holding his hands up in defense as Desmond brings his gun back up. Quickly, Daniel adds, “I’m not, I’m not. I’m—”

“Do I know you?”

“Yeah, in a way,” Daniel answers. “But listen, that’s not important. What is important, Desmond, is what I’m about to say to you. I need you to listen.”

Desmond continues to hold the rifle trained on Daniel, but listens as the man tells him, “You’re the only person who can help us, because, Desmond, the rules—the rules don’t apply to you. You’re special,” he says, still nervously eyeing the gun. Trying to get the point across, he carefully adds, “You’re uniquely and miraculously special.”

“What are you talkin’ about?” Desmond asks, his patience running thin.

Suddenly The Noise is back. Desmond glances at the jungle, and Daniel knows he’s running out of time. “Okay, listen to me—Listen!” Desmond turns his attention back to Daniel as Daniel rushes to tell him, “If the helicopter somehow made it off The Island, if you got home—”

“What helicopter?” Desmond has to shout to be heard over the increasing whine. “What are you talkin’ about?!”

“Listen! I need you to listen or people are gonna die! My name is Daniel Faraday.” Stressing the importance of his words, Daniel continues, “And right now, me and everyone else you left behind? We are in serious danger. You’re the only person who can help us. I need you to go back to Oxford University—” The light is growing, the noise is getting louder. “Go back to where we met!” Daniel shouts as Desmond starts to look around, totally confused as to what’s happening. The light is growing as Daniel rushes to finish, “I need you to go and find my mother! Her name—”

~*~*~

Desmond wakes up in a cold sweat in his bed. His eyes snap open as Penny turns on the bedside light.

“Are you alright?” she asks, concerned.

Desmond takes a long moment to catch his breath, something clearly bothering him. Finally, he answers, “I was on The Island.” She lays a sympathetic hand on his shoulder as he repeats, “I was on The Island…”

“You’ve been off The Island for three years now,” Penny answers gently. Desmond covers his eyes, still troubled, and she kisses his shoulder. “You’re safe now. It was just a dream.”

Suddenly, he sits up, turning to look at her. “It wasn’t a dream, Pen…It was a memory…”

Pulling on his shirt, Desmond climbs the stairs out of the cabin and onto the deck of the boat.

“Desmond, where are you going?” Penny calls after him.

He quickly begins raising the anchor.

“Des?” Penny follows him, confused. “Desmond, what are you doing?”
“We’re leavin’,” he answers, still cranking the anchor up.

“Leaving to go where?”

He stares at her a moment, then answers, “Oxford.”

Yes! Great way to start out the season Lost! I am suddenly reminded why I liked this show so much. When I first heard about all the time-jumping rumors, I thought, ‘oh no, not another Heroes disaster’, but unlike Heroes, I’m really liking this Lost time-jumping because it actually makes scientific sense! Plus you don't have to keep trying to figure out if it's past, present, or future *insert character here*. On another note, poor Sawyer. What's a guy gotta do to get a shirt around here?!
