Lawrence Kutner (1975-2009)

April 7th 2009 19:05
When they said “shocking episode” on the promo for this week’s House, they weren’t kidding.

When Kutner doesn’t show up for work, House sends Foreman and Thirteen over to his apartment to see what’s up. When he doesn’t answer the door, Thirteen uses a key to get in, and they find him on the floor in his bedroom. In a pool of blood. With an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Kutner is dead.

Shocked? I sure am. I was so caught off guard in fact, that I hardly paid attention to the case this week because every few seconds I found myself shouting, “Kutner? KUTNER? Really? WHYYYYY?!”

Rumor has it that Kal Penn (a.k.a. Dr. Lawrence Kutner) is going into politics (update: The White House has hired him as a liaison between President Barack Obama's administration and Asian constituents.), but suicide? Wow.

I do think that it was handled well in the episode. Thirteen insists that it wasn’t their fault, Foreman takes Cuddy up on time off, Taub throws himself into the work, trying to find out what’s wrong with a husband and wife who are both dying, and House refuses to believe it was suicide and goes on a determined search through Kutner’s apartment, friends, and family trying to find evidence that it was a murder.

Me? I kept waiting for House to wake up and find out that it was all a horrible dream, and when that didn’t happened, I was with him on the search for a murderer. Unfortunately, I was left with the same shocked empty sadness at the end of the episode. No explanation for suicide, no murderer. Kutner is just gone.

I could have bought an accident, or a sickness he’d been hiding from everyone, even the unlikely event of a murder or having him quit medicine to pursue his love of gaming, but suicide? It seems very out of character. I might have expected it from Thirteen or even Taub, but fun-loving, caring Kutner?

On the official House website, they have a virtual memorial, where the obituary reads:

Mercer County Courier
April 7, 2009

Dr. Lawrence Kutner died on Thursday, April 2nd from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 33 years old.

"Dr. Kutner was a hard working, young doctor with a kind, unassuming, gentle manner. He will be missed by all of us", said Dr. Lisa Cuddy, Dean of Medicine at Princeton Plainsboro Teaching Hospital, where Dr. Kutner worked.

They also have messages from his fellow doctors, and you can add your own thoughts. In Cameron’s note, she writes: “I don’t know if you knew this, but…out of all those new people, I’m pretty sure you were House’s favorite.”

*sniff* He was my favorite too! Who's going to play off House and lighten up the mood on the team now?

So what about you guys? Were you surprised? Angry? Confused? Sound off below!
