Is it just me or...

Are they not giving new shows as much time to gain a loyal fanbase anymore? Ratings that used to be considered good ten, even five years ago are suddenly not worth sticking it out. I completely understand cutting a show that isn’t gaining any interest whatsoever, but why go to all the trouble of gaining fans at all if you’re not even going to give a show the chance to finish the season?
I say if you have the actors, the scripts, and the sets have already been built, why not stick it out and see what happens? Over the past few years I’ve apparently wasted many hours watching only have a show I was actually starting to like get yanked mid-season or ending on a huge “to be continued” that apparently comes with the footnote “…only in your imaginations”.
Was anyone else irritated that we’ll never find out what really happened in that bank in The Nine? I admit I was doubtful about the show when I first heard about it, but once I started watching I thought, “Hmmm, this show might actually be worth watching.” Ooops, sorry, I guess not. Or is it? According to the official website, The Nine returns on ABC on August 1...interesting...I don't see that as hope for a series, but maybe we'll at least get to see the rest of the season?
Knowing that The X-files was in its last season, I was very excited to have The Lone Gunmen spin-off. I’d definitely take nine more years of the funniest show I’d seen in a long time. Thanks to “Them”, instead of nine great years we were given one year, no explanation of how The Gunmen ever got out of that room, and had to watch the sad shutting down of their newspaper in The X-files. And then to make matters worse…*tear* they DIED!!
*Runs off to cry in the corner*
Ok, sorry about that…it’s been what, five years and I’m still in denial?...
Anyway, getting back to more recent years, when I heard about Lost I automatically knew I was going to watch, but I also started watching a little show called, Invasion. Well we all know how that one went. Thankfully we still have Lost, but Invasion left us with a huge finale…To be continued only in your imaginations yet again. I was getting to like the characters and the fun creepiness of those weird water aliens.
When I heard that Frank Spotnitz (The X-files, The Lone Gunmen) was going to do a remake of The Night Stalker, I once again got excited. Here was something to fill the fun creepiness show slot. Low and behold (should I even be surprised by now?), poor Carl Kolchak will never find out what happened to his wife, and neither will we.
I was really starting to like Fox’s Standoff when it went on a sudden hiatus right during sweeps, and now I’m afraid Matt and Emily will be joining the ranks of under-estimated TV characters. The only thing I can say is thank you for at least showing us the rest of the season!
As I sift through the TV listings I start to wonder, how on earth is all this reality TV making it into their 10th seasons when half of “real” TV isn’t even making it through one entire season? Basically it all comes down to money and the fact that people will do anything for their fifteen minutes of fame. Well, if it was up to me, I’d rather watch fifteen minutes of a rerun of something I’ve seen a million times already. But oh well, I guess that’s just me.
Come next season I’m sure I’ll get sucked into yet another couple of shows that will only last only a few months, but I know how much work is put into both the creative and technical aspects of bringing something to the screen (big or small), so come premiere time I’ll dutifully watch, crossing my fingers then glaring at the almighty “Them” when they dutifully strike yet another of my possible new shows before sweeps!!
