Hollywood Writers Go On Strike-looks like reruns it is

November 5th 2007 21:12

The first Hollywood strike since 1988 (which lasted 22 weeks and cost the industry over $500 million) started Today with pickets on both coasts.

According to Yahoo! News:

The strike began after daylong talks Sunday failed to produce an agreement on payment to writers from shows offered on he Internet.

"The Tonight Show" on NBC will immediately go into reruns, according to a network official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the person lacked authorization to comment publicly.

KTLA-TV reported that fans of the "Ellen" talk show were told at the NBC lot in Burbank that there would be no taping on Monday.

Comedy Central previously said "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" and "The Colbert Report" would likely go into repeats as well.

The strike will not immediately impact production of movies or prime-time TV programs. Most studios have stockpiled dozens of movie scripts, and TV shows have enough scripts or completed shows in hand to last until early next year.

At the CBS lot in Studio City, about 40 people hoisted signs and applauded when midmorning picketing began.

Personally I don’t blame them. As a writer, I definitely know it’s not an easy job, and you don’t get paid nearly enough! Plus once you sell your script “They” can do whatever they want to it…Plus let's face it, without good creative writers we'd all be left with a world of "reality" shows. Ahhhh! The horror!

We all watch our favorite movies and TV shows praising the actors or directors, but rarely do people say, “Hey so-in-so is my favorite writer, I’m going to go see his/her next film”. So here’s a proverbial toast to the writers, you don’t get the credit you deserve!

Perhaps they are the unsung heroes of the TV and film industry. What's The Office without its witty dialogue? What's Heroes without its twists and turns?

I hope these writers get paid their dues... FAST! I don't want to miss out on any great episodes!

I hope they do to, and that this year it won't have to take 22 weeks!
