Grey’s Anatomy: Piece of My Heart

May 23rd 2008 01:32

Addison’s back! And she’s in hugging mood! She assures The Chief that she’s not back, she’s just here for one surgery, and then she’s gone.

Meanwhile, Christina and Izzie are still sore over losing The Contest, and Meredith starts her new clinical trial. Derek warns her not to get emotionally involved with these patients, as they are, for the time being anyway, terminal. She assures him she won’t.

They shake on it.

Addison shows up. “Hey!”

Awkward…

“Hey! Come here you!” She grabs Meredith into a hug (much to Meredith’s surprise!) and says, “It’s great to see you guys!”

She comments on the greatness of the sun and surfing in California, and Derek cuts in, “You surf?”

Uh, okay no, she doesn’t surf. But still it’s great to see them! “See how I hugged you?” she asks Meredith, all happy. “You stole my husband from me and I hugged you. I’ve grown! I have. And I can be happy! For the happy couple!”

Even more awkward…

“Okay! I’m gonna go save a life now!” She rushes off and Meredith and Derek quickly go separate ways.

~*~*~

Addison checks in on Sloan. He’s growing new skin for babies and wants to get back with Addison just for old times sake (plus the nurses are shutting him down). Addison rolls her eyes and heads out.

~*~*~

Meanwhile, Izzie’s dealing with her very scotch-smelling, hung-over interns. Um, yeah, George had a party last night and…

Izzie stops short. “George had a party?”

~*~*~

Meredith leads her interns to what she describes as “extraordinary. Take in the moment.” Derek catches up to them and warns them all not to take anything the patient says personally. It’s the tumor talking.

They enter the patient’s room. He’s just laughing at all the inappropriate times, and calls George over to try and hook him up with his wife. She has to keep reminding herself “it’s just the tumor talking…just the tumor.”

~*~*~

Addison meets up with Alex in the hall and grabs him into a hug.

Alex: We’re hugging…

Addison: Yep! I hug now. So you’re my guy huh?

Alex: You think I’d let anyone else in on a case like this?

Suddenly Rebecca shows up. Addison heads off as Alex turns to Rebecca. “You don’t own a phone?”

She had to talk to him. Now. He tries to tell her that he’s a little busy here, he’s off to a really important surgery, but she suddenly blurts out, “I’m pregnant.”

Whoa, what? Sorry, she didn’t mean to blurt it out like that, but he never has any time to talk so she didn’t have a choice but to blurt it…

Alex just asks her if she’s keeping it or not, then says, “I have a really big case,” and heads off.

~*~*~

The team is assembled: Cristina, Alex, Addison, The Chief, Sloan, Bailey, and Hahn. They’re all discussing the case Addison was called in for. A baby’s heart is growing outside it’s body. They’re all going to have to work together here to make sure that the baby and the mom survive. The last case Addison was on like this was ten years ago. The baby squeezed his own heart and died.

Mark is frustrated that no one seems to appreciate the amazing fact that he grew a flap of the babies own skin!

~*~*~

Izzie watches unhappily as all the interns laugh and call out to George as he makes his way over. Apparently it was a pretty cool party after all.

Izzie tells him she spent last night with a search engine, and George just waves it off. The party was spontaneous, nothing. An intern comes up to fist-bump him. “You coded!” They all start laughing. Inside joke.

Izzie doesn’t see the humor in it.

Lexie comes up. “So we’re all set for tonight.”

Izzie: Tonight? What’s tonight?

Lexie: Oh…the interns, we’re just having a sort of darts thing at Joe’s tonight.

Darts! Izzie loves darts! George doesn’t really have a choice but to invite her, and she happily accepts, oblivious to all the groaning interns around her.

“Yay!” Izzie walks off and Lexie pulls George to the side. “You so coded.”

~*~*~

Addison and Bailey are getting ready and Addison comments on how in LA people talk about their feelings, but her in Seattle there seems to be this unspoken code against such things. So…”Any chance you want to tell me what’s going on Miranda?”

Bailey shakes her head. “Just a lot has changed since you left. A lot.”

Addison: Oh come on, name one thing that’s changed in this hospital.

Bailey: The clinic is actually making some money. The Chief’s wife left him. Derek and Meredith broke up, and I—

Addison: Whoa, whoa. Derek and Meredith broke up?

Bailey: Like I said, a lot has changed.

~*~*~

The doctors go to talk to the couple who’s having the baby who’s heart is on the outside. Addison and Alex will begin the delivery, and Bailey will stay behind to close the mother’s incision while Addison takes the baby into OR2. There, Hahn will work on the baby’s heart and Addison will work on the baby’s intestinal problems.

Wait, what intestinal problem? Not to worry, they just want to make sure.

Baby’s mom: I just wish I could keep him inside me, keep him protected.

Baby’s dad: He is protected no matter what. By us. By our love!

Outside in the hall Alex comments, “Something about that guy makes me want to punch him out.”

“And yet you didn’t!” Addison says happily. “For which I am grateful Karev.”

Cristina tries to bond with Hahn. “Hippies. Annoying huh?”

Hahn just frowns at her. “Go away.”

Poor Cristina.

Callie joins Hahn and Addison, asking Hahn if she’s figured out how great Addison is, and Hahn asks her if Addison knows that Callie’s divorced. No, no she didn’t. Callie just laughs, saying it was “the best thing that could have happened, really.” She grins and nudges Hahn.

“Really?” Addison is left to stand in the hallway open-mouthed as Hahn and Callie walk off laughing together. Interesting…

~*~*~

Back with her brain tumor patient, Meredith tries to reassure his wife that she’s been incredibly strong through this whole thing. Her husband just blows a raspberry, telling her, “Jennifer come on! We’re in a hospital full of eligible doctors, and you’re a waitress with no prospects!” He orders her to hurry up and catch a new guy “before I bite the dust!”

Meredith and Jennifer both assure Jennifer that “it’s just the tumor talking” as her husband busts into another round of inappropriate laughter.

Suddenly he stops. “I can’t see. Anything. I’m blind…Hahahahaha!”

~*~*~

Derek checks on his eyes as the guy continues to yell and insult him. Derek ignores him then tells him they should consider moving the surgery to today. The guy just laughs again and asks Meredith, “What about you Dr. Gray? You’re a sexy little thing, you think Dr. Shepherd here is attractive enough for my wife?”

Jennifer leaves and Meredith goes after her. This isn’t easy she knows. Jennifer knows it’s just the tumor talking, but she really doesn’t want this to be her last memory of her husband. She walks off as Derek comes out of the room. Meredith assures him that she’s not getting emotionally involved…

~*~*~

One of Izzie’s interns comes to tell her that she’s having trouble finding a heartbeat on an ultrasound and Izzie just puts her arm around her and tells her that’s what happens when you’ve had scotch for dinner!

She follows her intern into an examining room, where she runs into--“Oh. Rebecca. Hi.”

Rebecca says she didn’t really want an ultrasound, she just wanted something for the morning sickness. She tells Izzie she’s just about five weeks along and Izzie tells her that it can be hard to get an ultrasound so early on.

As Izzie leaves, Rebecca asks if she knows when Dr. Kerev will be out of surgery, and Izzie manages to tell her that she doesn’t know if he’s gone in yet. Again. Awkward…

~*~*~

Addison confronts Derek. “You broke. Up. With Meredith Gray?”

He tells her they’re doing a clinical trial and Addison still can’t get over it. “I hugged her!”

Clearly Derek’s not going to talk about this now, so Addison relents and asks him about his clinical trial.

Derek: Well, if it doesn’t go well, I’m killing people for sport!

He confesses that Meredith is expecting greatness from him but in a clinical trial he’s just groping around in the dark hoping it goes okay.

“Seriously,” Addison interrupts. “What are you doing?” And she’s not talking about the clinical trial here.

Derek tells her he’s seeing someone else…she’s lovely. Right.

~*~*~

Alex comes in to tell Rebecca that she really has to stop paging him because he’s got a very important case today! She tells him she’s just as scared as he is about all this, and he insists that he’s not scared, he’s just busy.

“Look,” he adds. “You don’t want me, okay? This--this is not a thing you want me for. I won’t be good at it. I’m not father material!”

She just wants him to stay so they can talk and figure this thing out together. He has to go.

~*~*~

Back with the couple who’s baby’s heart is on the outside, Alex can’t stand their everything’s-coming-up-roses approach.

“Don’t you understand what we’re trying to tell you?” He finally interrupts. He starts telling it like it is despite Addison and Bailey’s “Dr. Kerev”ing. “You can cross you fingers and close your eyes and hope this all just goes away!”

Out in the hallway, Alex continues to rant about how they’re having a baby and they’re unprepared. They’re wasting their time talking about how much they love each other, “As if that has anything to do with raising a baby!” he argues. “He’s not prepared, I was trying to prepare him!”

“Dr Kerev,” Bailey says. “Right now you’re feeling all your feelings right out in the open. Do me a favor and stuff them back in.”

Alex nods and walks off. Addison turns to Miranda. “Interesting advice.”

“Don’t you start with me.”

They head off.

~*~*~

Callie waves at Addison on her way to the lunch table outside, and is cut off by Cristina who tells her that Hahn is no longer allowed in her apartment.

Callie: What? What are you talking about?

Cristina: Hahn. She’s completely unfair, she refuses to teach me.

She goes on and Callie interrupts that Erica has a good heart, she just has to tell her how she feels, okay?

Callie goes to sit down as Cristina mumbles, “Tell her how I feel? Well I don’t speak girl.” Cristina heads off.

Callie: Sorry about that. Did I mention I live with Yang now?

Addison continues to eat her chips, studying Callie.

Callie: What? Why are you looking at me like that?

Addison: Callie…are you speaking the Vagina Monologues now?

Callie: What?!

Addison is defensive, assuring her that she’s all for it, Erica seems nice and all. Callie breaks into a fit of nervous giggles denying it all the way that she and Hahn are a couple. That’s craziness right?! Addison’s been in LA way to long. Callie keeps going on and Addison just smirks, going back to her chips. Okay then…

~*~*~

In the lunch room, George is torn between Izzie calling out to him and all his new intern friends waving him towards their table. What to do, what to do…?

Lexie corners him first. “Hey listen. I’m just the messenger. But you should be prepared that people are threatening to drop out of the tournament tonight. Nobody wants to get drunk with their boss.”

George tries to protest, but she reminds him she’s just the messenger, and leaves.

Poor George sits down next to Izzie, who asks him what that was all about. Was he discussing all his special plans with all his special friends?

Cristina slams her tray down. “I would like us all to talk today. I would like us to talk. Because…I…care, and I want to know things, and I have fifteen minutes to hear about your feels. So,” She turns to Alex first. “What are your thoughts?”

Alex sucks on his straw.

Okay then. Cristina turns to Izzie instead. “What are your thoughts?”

“Honestly?” Izzie answers. “I’m a little worried about my friend Alex here because his Jane Doe here keeps showing up like something out of Fatal Attraction.”

Alex glares at her and tells her it’s nothing, she’s married. Cristina asks him “Does that hurt your heart?” and Meredith can’t take it anymore.

“What’s wrong with you?”

“I’m trying to talk girl!”

“Well, you coded,” Izzie says with a laugh, and George just hands his head. The rest of them look at her like she’s crazy. “What? It’s new slang, everybody’s saying it.”

“Actually,” George says, trying not to laugh. “The way you just said that? That was you coding.”

Izzie jumps up to go talk to her real patients. She doesn’t have time for clinical trials and girl talk trouble and…yeah, she’s gone. Cristina makes a desperate ploy for the sparkle pager, she and Meredith are fighting over it as Callie comes over to ask, “Anyone, uh, ever think you two are a couple?”

Without missing a beat, Meredith answers, “No, because we screw boys like whores on tequila.”

“And they we either try to marry them or drown ourselves,” Cristina adds.

“Huh.”

Alex sucks on his straw again.

Cristina tells Callie she has to make Hahn let her scrub in or else Callie’s out of her apartment. Desperate times call for desperate measures here.

~*~*~

Izzie happily tells yet another couple that they’re going to have a baby. Wow, what a day for babies huh? Everywhere she looks it’s—the woman cuts into Izzie’s happy speech with the tearful announcement that they need to schedule an abortion.

Izzie pulls back the prenatal vitamins. It’s not her place to intrude, but are they sure they don’t want to sit on this for a while? Yeah, they’re sure. The woman tells her she’s HIV positive. Tearfully, she asks if there’s any way they can get it done today?

Happiness obliterated, Izzie tells them that yeah, she’ll see what she can do.

~*~*~

Callie runs into Hahn in the hall, and asks her if she’ll do her a favor and put Cristina on her surgery.

Hahn: Only if you buy drinks at Joe’s tonight.

Callie: Done!

She walks off with an uh-oh confused look on her face , passing Addison, who makes her way over to where Izzie is hiding out in the nurses’ station eating chips.

Izzie asks Addison if she’ll do her a favor and talk to her patient who has HIV and thinks she has to terminate her pregnancy. Addison tells her, “She doesn’t,” and that she doesn’t work here anymore. Yeah, Izzie knows that but…Addison interrupts, “I don’t work here Stevens!” If she did, she’d be doing surgeries and getting back with her husband. Not that she wants to or anything but…Yeah, the point was she doesn’t work here anymore. “Go! Be the change you want to see in the world!”

Izzie looks up from her chips. “Did you just quote Gandhi to me?”

~*~*~

Alex is talking to the hippie husband who tells him he knows Alex thinks he’s an idiot, but no matter what there’s always hope right?

~*~*~

Derek comes in to talk to his clinical trial patient, and the guy admits that he hates this. He just wants to see his wife. Derek tells him that he doesn’t have to do the surgery today, he could still spend some more time with Jennifer.

The guy admits that he just doesn’t want her to be alone after she’s gone. Derek tells her he needs to tell Jennifer that.

~*~*~

Meredith busts into her therapists office to quickly tell her, “I’m not the one emotionally involved, he‘s the one emotionally involved.”

“He?”

“Derek.” He’s the one who told her not to get her hopes up, and as she points out, anyone who knows her already knows she’s not a hopeful kind of person. No wonder they didn’t work out! Right. Okay then.

“I gotta go. Surgeries about to start.”

“The surgery with no hope?”

“Shut up.”

~*~*~

In the OR, Addison jokes, “So who’s the unlucky McRebound?” She laughs but no one else does. “What? Oh is the whole “Mc” thing over now? Surely things haven’t changed that much.”

Dr. Bailey has the unfortunate task of telling her, “Addison the woman standing to your right? The one handing you the surgical instruments…?”

Addison looks over. “Hey!”

“Hey! Six dates, heavy petting, lots of tongue. Good guy! Scalpel?”

~*~*~

Meanwhile, Izzie tells her patients that they can have a perfectly healthy baby . The guy is happy, but the woman is furious. She was diagnosed at 19, and she’s not putting all that on a baby! She orders Izzie out and asks for a different doctor.

~*~*~

Meredith and Derek’s clinical trial patient is going into surgery. On his way in, he stops laughing long enough to tell his wife that he can’t do this alone. He needs her to promise him she’ll find someone else.

“Okay…okay.”

“Maybe I’ll make it! I hope I make it.” He’s rolled into the ER laughing.

~*~*~

The baby team gets the baby out, exposed heart and all, but the mom starts to hemorrhage. Alex is left with the baby as Addison rushes back to help Bailey.

The Chief meets up with him on the way to taking the baby to Hahn and Alex tells him what’s going on.

~*~*~

Meanwhile, Izzie is at a loss. “I lost the contest, I couldn’t hack cardio. I preformed CPR on a deer, I think I’ve been hiding I—“

“You can’t play darts with us,” George interrupts. What?! Yeah, he’s on this whole trying-to-embrace-what-he-has kick, and his new friends don’t want to get drunk with their boss.

She’s their boss? Right! She’s their boss! Izzie runs off. “I’ve gotta do something!”

A newly empowered Izzie tells walks through her dozing interns, ordering, “Get in here.”

The woman is mad to see her back. “I thought I made myself clear.”

“You did. I didn’t.” She calls out to her interns again. “Get in here!”

Izzie goes on to explain that she wasn’t clear enough when she first talked to them. She told them they could have a healthy baby, but she was unclear. “So just listen okay? I wasn’t telling you that there is SOME chance that your baby might not be born sick, I was telling you that there is a 98% chance that your baby could be born perfectly healthy. A 98% chance. There is a higher chance of your baby being born with Down Syndrome there is of you passing HIV onto your child.”

The woman is shocked. Izzie tells her she knows it’s difficult to change her thinking so quickly, but this is their chance, her chance to be a mom if she wants it.

The woman breaks down in relieved tears and hugs her husband, who thanks Izzie.

~*~*~

Hahn tells Alex that they need Addison in there now before they lose the baby. The heart monitor starts to beep and Cristina suddenly appears. “Tell me what to do.”

Hahn looks at her, then finally says, “Massage the heart. Gently.”

She does. “I can feel it getting stronger.” Heart rate is back up.

Hahn: Good job Kerev. *to Cristina* You can step back now.

(Ouch! That was a little harsh Hahn don’t you think?)

~*~*~

Mark places the skin graft on the baby’s heart.

~*~*~

Derek’s patient flatlines.

~*~*~

Addison and Bailey get the mom back to normal.

~*~*~

Hahn: *looking at the baby* Look at that. Beating inside his chest for the first time.

Sloan: And God admired his amazing skin flap. And he saw that it was good.

Addison comes in to see how the baby is. He’s fine. Alex watches his tiny beating heart.

~*~*~

Derek begins to take off his OR gear and steps back. “Call it Dr. Gray.”

“Time of death, 19:33.”

~*~*~

Bailey’s washing up. Baby’s fine, mom’s fine. “Good day.”

Addison studies her a second, then says, “You look sad.”

Miranda tells her she can’t do this. “If I told you Tucker moved out, if I told you I haven’t slept alone in 12 years. If I told you MY heart hurt so much sometimes I want to rip it from my chest with my own little hands, I would fall apart. And I don’t have time to fall apart. Not that I’m not happy to see you, I am. I just wish that you would go home so that the choice of talking and falling apart would go away.”

~*~*~

Meredith watches through the window as Derek pulls Jennifer into a hug as he tells her her husband didn’t make it through the surgery.

Later on, Meredith admits, “I got my hopes up.”

Derek: Yeah me too.

He starts to leave…

Meredith: Dr. Shepherd?

Derek: Yes?

Meredith: It was a pleasure working with you today.

She holds out her hand and he takes, it studying it for a second.

Derek: Dr. Grey.

They leave, almost smiling.

~*~*~

Addison admits to the Chief that she does miss this. He tells her he could put her paperwork through tonight…No, she needed to come back to realize she needs to be somewhere else.

Izzie walks by to let Addison know that she was Gandhi. Addison laughs, and the Chief raises an eyebrow.

“It’s an LA thing.”

~*~*~

George walks in and Izzie asks him, “Aren’t you gonna be late for your party?”

No, he’s decided he wants to hang out with her. She gets it, go .

George: You know, whenever anyone says something really funny and I laugh I always look around to see if you think it's funny too. Even when you are not there, I look around.

She smiles. “Go.”

~*~*~

Derek steps into the elevator at the same time as Meredith, who is quickly followed by Addison…and Nurse Rose. The door closes.

Have I mentioned it’s awkward yet?

The elevator door opens. Mark is waiting.

He takes one look at Derek and the three women and laughs, stepping into the elevator. “Oh I bet you wish you’d taken the stairs right about now.”

~*~*~

At Joe’s Callie, Addison, and Hahn are laughing over drinks, and Hahn stops for a second to pull a hair out of Callie’s lip gloss. Addison takes notice, and Callie quickly drains her drink.

Mark steps up. “Any of you ladies want to dance?

Addison: Ugh! For the thousandth time, the answer is no, Mark.

Hahn: Sloan—

Callie: I’ll dance with you!

She jumps up to go dance with Mark as Cristina comes over to ask, “Is it because I’m Asian?”

Hahn tells her she’s not without skill, but she’s not going to tell Cristina what a good little girl she is. “So stop seeking my approval, I’m not seeking yours.”

Cristina walks away and Addison finally says what we’ve all been thinking, “A little hard on her, don’t you think?”

Hahn finally admits that, “I think she reminds me of me.”

Addison notices Hahn watching Callie and Mark dance.

Addison: She’s pretty huh?

Hahn: She’s beautiful.

Callie asks Mark if he wants to get out of there. You bet he does!

Over by the darts, George and his new friends laugh, and he automatically looks around for Izzie.

~*~*~

Izzie is still at the hospital. Someone hands over some patient’s results to her, and Izzie takes one look at it, then, “This can’t be right, are you sure this is right?”

~*~*~

Addison starts to leave and Meredith calls after her. “You ‘re leaving already?”

Addison: I have a flight to catch.

Addison starts to leave, but can’t stand it anymore. She heads over to Meredith’s table to tell her what’s what.

Meredith: Excuse me?

Addison: I’m talking about Derek. Derek. Christopher. Shepherd. Are letting him get away?

She swears that if Meredith lets Derek ride off into the sunset “with that doe-eyed little thing--” No. She’s not doing this anymore.

Addison leaves.

~*~*~

“Of course I’m sure.”

Izzie stares at the doctor and down at the lab results. “Then my patient is not pregnant?”

“Apparently not.”

Izzie heads down the hall.

~*~*~

Alex stares at Rebecca a second, then slowly leans forward to touch her stomach…

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Ahhh! No! I’ve never liked Rebecca, and I totally saw that coming! Not cool! Very cool to have Addison back though, even if it was just for a short time.
