Grey’s Anatomy: Losing My Mind
October 1st 2008 03:13
Callie is worried when she walks out to find Cristina *gasp!* vacuuming their apartment! Meanwhile, Meredith wants to fire her therapist, and everyone at the hospital is anxious to meet Dr. Walter Tapley, an amazing surgeon who The Chief just happened to study under.
When Richard says they need something impressive, Hahn tells him that she will “stab someone in the chest if she has to.” This makes George laugh, and The Chief turns to him to make sure he’ll be out of the OR by 10. George is on it. Oh and his wife hasn’t called yet.
Derek decides he’s going to be optimistic about their next clinical trial, and when Meredith seems a little down, he tells her that he can do this one without her if she wants. She simply replies, “I’m not a quitter. I don’t need you to rescue me, let’s do this.” Okay then.
They enter the patient’s room and Greta asks if her surgery can be pushed back a few hours, until after her boyfriend, Andre arrives. Her sister tries to talk her out of it, but Greta is sure he’ll be there.
~*~*~
Izzie walks by to find Rebecca in the hospital again, this time looking for Mark. She catches her and asks her where she’s been, confronting her on the fact that she’s not pregnant and it’s killing Izzie not being able to tell Alex the truth. Rebecca insists that she is pregnant, she’s not trying to trap Alex, and that Izzie should run the test again to see for herself. She also tells Izzie to go ahead and tell Alex anything, she wants him in on this.
Rebecca: I’ve always wanted a baby.
Izzie: You have a baby…
Rebecca: Of course I do, I want another one.
She asks if Izzie can find Dr. Sloan for her and Izzie regretfully agrees.
~*~*~
Greta’s sister finds Derek outside her sister’s room, and confides in him that there is no Andre. Her sister made him up after she went on a cruise, right around the time her symptoms started up. No one has ever seen or heard from Andre, not even pictures. She begs him to tell her sister that they can’t wait for Andre.
~*~*~
George keeps watch outside a door and Alex walks by.
Alex: Is Tapley in ther?
George: No.
Alex: You’re lying.
George: Yes.
Meredith rounds the corner.
Meredith: Is Tapley in there?
George: No.
Meredith: Liar!
George: Yes.
Callie rounds the corner with Cristina in hand, grabbing Meredith by the arm. She drags them both down the hallway, telling Meredith that something is wrong with Cristina.
Callie: She cleaned. Cleaned the apartment. Which she has no idea how to do, so she basically just pushed dirt around the apartment.
Meredith defends Cristina by saying not everybody has to be happy all the time. When Callie counters that Walter Tapley is here and Cristina doesn’t want to meet him, Meredith decides that yes, that is bad. Callie tells Cristina to get some help then walks off.
When Cristina tells Meredith that she really doesn’t care about Tapley, Meredith frowns. “Cristina? Are you in the dark place?”
“Yeah…”
“Me too.”
They both walk off.
~*~*~
George opens the door for Hahn then steps inside himself. Walter Tapley tells them that he’s not there for a visit, he’s there for a double valve replacement and tricuspid repair. He pulls out all his charts, echoes, chest x-rays, and everything else they might need. He may have invented the procedure, but he can’t operate on himself. His colleges can say no to him, but seeing as how he started Richard’s career, he thinks Richard can’t say no.
~*~*~
In The Chief’s office, Hahn tries to talk Richard out of the procedure.
Hahn: Hey I might go down in history as the surgeon who killed Walter Tapley, but hey at least they’re writing about me?
The Chief: Erica, sit down.
He starts to tell her the story, but Hahn interrupts, basically telling him the story he was going to tell her, then tells him she’s still not going to operate on Tapley.
~*~*~
Meanwhile, Rose catches up to Derek and asks why he’s avoiding him. He tells her he lost a patient, that was it. Mark teases him about it, and The Chief shows up to complain to them about Hahn. By the way, The Chief wants to know if he should call his wife again if he already called her and she didn’t call him back.
Mark: See The Chief calls the next day.
Derek: Oh you don’t have to call her back. You just met this person, it’s new, it’s fun, it’s casual!
The Chief: It’s my wife.
Mark and Derek: Ooohhhh…
The Chief: Do I call again?
Mark: Another call looks desperate.
Derek: Send her an e-mail. Invite her to dinner. Casual. Confident.
Mark: Sexy…I mean, romantic.
George runs by and The Chief catches him and asks him to draft a casual, confident, sexy e-mail to his wife. “Tell her the train is leaving the station and she better get on it.”
~*~*~
Izzie catches up with Alex and finally tells him the truth. She also tells him that she ran the tests twice, and they both came back negative. He still doesn’t believe her, insisting that the lab (that SHE) is wrong all the time, and tells her to “mind your own freakin’ business and stay out of my life.”
~*~*~
Meredith shows up at her therapist’s door demanding her chart back. Her therapist argues that it’s not appropriate to show up at her door unannounced, besides, she didn’t fire her, she quit remember? She closes the door, but Meredith pushes it back open then stops short.
Hahn is sitting on the couch. “Make an appointment Grey. It’s what we do.”
Meredith has no choice but to back out of the room, shutting the door behind her.
~*~*~
Everyone’s standing around trying to decide what to do on Talpey, when Bailey gets a page from the daycare center. The Chief sends George to find out what they want.
Lexie gets alarmed when Cristina wants her to put in the central line for Tapley. She’s never done one before!
Christina just tells her to, “Take a needle, jab it into his sublcavian so he can receive medicine and not croak. A central line.” She leaves.
~*~*~
Meredith catches up to Derek to ask how it went with Greta, but he hasn’t spoken to her yet.
Meredith: You haven’t spoken to her yet? I already mixed the virus and the IL2, we only have six hours!
Derek: We’re not going to wait six hours, we’re going to wait three hours.
Meredith: Derek. The guy we’re waiting for doesn’t exist.
Derek: I want to give her a little more time to enjoy him. Or the idea of him if nothing else, because once we remove the tumor, it’s all going to disappear.
Meredith argues that that’s okay, because real love only exists in delusional fantasies anyway. “Real love,” she argues, “Isn’t like that.”
“Good to know.” He leaves.
~*~*~
George shows up with Tuck. “He punched someone named Harrison.” Apparently there was a graham cracker involved. Bailey takes him away.
Lexie comes to George for help with Tapley’s central line. And he can’t believe that Cristina gave it to her! Cristina just mocks him, telling him how he was “Burke’s guy”. She continues to practice her stitching on a cup and George just grabs what he needs, ignoring her on his way out.
~*~*~
Derek asks Mark if he was happy when he was with Meredith, pointing out that Sloan wouldn’t stay with an unpredictable, unavailable woman. He thinks he idealizes it.
Mark: Don’t sell yourself short, allow yourself to grow with Rose. Share experiences, create memories.
Derek: Is this the new leaf?
Mark: *laughs* Yeah.
Derek: *laughs* Needs work.
~*~*~
Tapley complains about what they will and won’t give him, and how if he can’t get his head of thoracic surgery to do what he wants, Richard is not the chief he thought he was. He continues to complain, getting up to rip out all his hospital tubes, and finally The Chief tells him to “You get back in that bed!” He’ll talk to Hahn.
~*~*~
Cristina sits at a table with Meredith, sucking forlornly on her drink straw.
Meredith: You’re not even going to watch the Walter Tapley surgery?
Cristina: I don’t want five minutes with Walter Tapley, I want five years. Tapley’s a star-maker, that’s why The Chief’s a star. Five minutes with Tapley is a slap in the face, it’s like giving an alcoholic a sip of wine.
Lexie comes over to ask Meredith if she can talk, and suddenly Cristina can’t take it anymore. She tells Lexie that Meredith “hates you. She’s not going to say it to your face because she’s too polite, but she thinks you’re annoying. And you showing up like the good little girl daddy didn’t abandon? Is like the worse thing that’s happened to her in months. And that’s saying a lot coming from Meredith Grey.”
Lexie walks off and Meredith sighs. “It’s going to be okay.”
Cristina sucks on her straw. “Wanna bet?”
Across the room, Sloan sits down at Callie’s table. She tells him she’ll be ready in like two minutes, but he stops her. “We’re gonna sit and enjoy a meal together.” He’s turning over a knew leaf. “If you want this—” he points to his lap. “Then you’re going to get this too.” He points to his head.
“Eww.”
Hahn tells him to shove over. They tease him about a threesome and Sloan leaves.
The Chief shows up. “I am The Chief.”
Hahn: And I’m not killing Walter Tapley. I don’t care who you are.
So she’d rather have him die under his watch than under his knife? Yes. The Chief starts to wonder if there’s something with the women in the hospital. Do they all just not hear him when he talks?
~*~*~
Derek and Meredith tell Greta that it is possible that her tumor could be blurring the line between reality and fantasy. Andre might be part of that. Greta tells them that her sister just can’t stand that she’s finally got someone.
Meredith points out that there are no pictures, and Greta pulls out her sketchbook. Here’s one, and another...Derek feels for Greta, and tells Meredith to “leave her alone.”
Meredith continues to point out that those aren’t pictures, just sketches that came from Greta’s head, and Derek interrupts, more forcefully this time, “Leave her alone.”
Greta tells them that she’s an artist, sketching is what she does. She’s in love. With a real man. Derek nods. Greta’s sister tells her to tell them how they met. It was a cruise around the Greek Islands. She was running back to the ship and lost her shoe. That night at dinner, Andre found her shoe and brought it back to her.
Greta’s sister turns to them. “Sound familiar?”
Cinderella…Greta also just happened to have her first blackouts on the ship. Andre carried her—Her sister cuts in that a woman found her on the bathroom floor. “Prince charming didn’t—”
“Get out!” Greta finally yells. “All of you! Get out, this is stupid! Stupid!”
Meredith tells her that the serum they injected her with only lasts a few hours. Greta asks if it’ll expire by three and Derek adamantly tells her, “No it is not.”
Meredith: Dr. Shepherd—
“It is not!” He interrupts, shooting her a warning. “We can wait until three. We can’t wait all day--” He turns to Meredith, “But we can WAIT until three.”
He leaves.
Rose tries to talk to him, but Derek is too upset. He doesn’t even notice her there.
~*~*~
Rebecca is complaining to Sloan that her face doesn’t match the rest of her body. He tells her he can’t operate on her if she’s pregnant, and she argues that she just wants to know if he can finish the job he started or not. Sloan stares at her. Something isn’t quite right here.
~*~*~
Meredith barges into the bathroom to talk to her therapist, who tells her to “make an appointment”. Meredith continues to talk to the stall door. “I don’t want to make an appointment just to get my chart back. I’d like you to get it right now.”
“And I’d like to go to the bathroom in peace,” her therapist answers. “Seems like everybody’s dissatisfied.” They’ll talk about it in therapy.
Meredith argues that she doesn’t need therapy, and suddenly Lexie barges in to tell her that she forgives her for everything, and even though she and her friends yell at her and she hates her, Meredith is still her older sister and she still loves her. There. So, she forgives her. Lexie rushes out.
The toilet flushes, and Meredith’s therapist steps out. “2:00 good for you?”
“Yeah, okay,” Meredith says sadly.
~*~*~
Hahn insists that if Tapley dies, she’s blaming The Chief. And telling every reporter in the land that it was his fault. She stomps out.
Tapley admits that he wanted an old friend to do this so that he could have someone to say goodbye to at his death bed.
~*~*~
Sloan follows Izzie down the stairs, asking what she’s treating Rebecca for. “A pregnancy she thinks she has, which she doesn’t,” Izzie answers.
“Doesn’t one of you have science on her side?”
“Yes, she is acting really weird.”
He tells her that Rebecca wants breast enhancement surgery now and he thinks that maybe she’s suffering from acute stress disorder. It sometimes happens to people who have massive plastic surgery.
“Like thinking you’re pregnant and forgetting that you already have a baby?”
Yeah, like that. He wants her to confirm that Rebecca’s not pregnant, and then schedule her for a psych evaluation.
~*~*~
The Chief asks George to read his text back to him because the screen on his phone is too small. George doesn’t think that’s such a good idea, but does because it’s The Chief. “Dear Adele, eat with me. The love train is leaving the station and you know you want to take a ride—”
“O’Malley.”
“With all due respect, Sir, I’m not the one who came up with the train or the station.”
“Okay give that to me, I’ll do it myself.”
~*~*~
Callie tries to coax Mark into the on-call room, but he’s sticking to his “new leaf turning” thing. He starts teasing her about Hahn and Callie thinking about sex all the time, and finally Callie interrupts, “Stop. Stop talking about Erica Hahn.” Disgusted, she walks off.
~*~*~
Meanwhile, Hahn is staring down at her patient. When The Chief asks her if something’s wrong, she answers, “One of the founding fathers of cardio-thoracic surgery is on the table and I’m about to slice open his chest. Give me a minute.” She takes a deep breath, then asks for a scalpel.
“Don’t screw it up,” The Chief teases.
“I’m gonna kill you.”
~*~*~
Meredith talks to her therapist again about their patient and how she and Derek don’t agree about whether Greta’s boyfriend really exists. She can’t get over why Derek’s all broken up over this true love that doesn’t really exist. Her therapist argues that in their relationship, it was Meredith who wanted to give up, not Derek.
Meredith argues right back that she didn’t want to give up, she wanted to try again but he went and kissed Rose. Her therapist points out that she’s the one who waits for him to mess up just so she can stand back and say “Aha! Now I quit.”
“No, it wasn’t working.”
“Was your life not working when you let that slip from under you?”
“Okay, when are you going to stop suggesting that I’m suicidal?”
“When you start acting like someone that wants to be alive.” To make her point, she reminds Meredith of the drowning thing, and then there was the time she stuck her hand in a patient to grab a bomb…
Meredith argues she was trying to save a patient.
“Why is it that every other person in that room had the sense to hit the deck? You know people run away from this line between life and death. You seem to stand on it and wait for a strong wind to sway you one way or the other.”
She tells Meredith that even though she’s not slitting her wrists, she’s still careless with her life. Why? Because her mother probably told her she was just wasted space and she probably believed her.
Furious, Meredith demands her chart. Her therapist reluctantly hands it over. Meredith takes it, then warns, “And don’t ever talk about my mother again.”
~*~*~
Things are not going well for Dr. Hahn. As she starts to complain about her reputation and how it’s all The Chief’s fault, he interrupts her. “It’s done.”
~*~*~
Meredith and Derek wait with Greta until four. Andre hasn’t shown…It’s five and still no Andre. Greta thikns maybe his plane was delayed or his phone was off.
“He’s coming.” She starts to cry and Derek hands her a kleenex. She can’t believe this. “My head did this?”
“Your tumor did this,” Derek tells her.
“How can he not be real?” She starts to sob and Derek takes her hand. “I’m sorry…” He nods to Meredith. They can start now.
~*~*~
Bailey and her husband are arguing over the fact that he knew Tuck was punching other kids and didn’t tell her. She argues that she had to bribe the daycare to get him back in, and clearly whatever her husband was doing isn’t working.
As their arguing gets louder, George notices and walks in. “Hey Tuck!” He asks if he can take him for awhile and Bailey stops yelling. Yeah, he can take him.
George picks up the baby. “Want to go play with some office supplies?”
George leaves and they continue to argue. She can’t take a week off because she’s trying to make a life for them. Does he think staying at home is a LUXURY?
Their arguing gets louder and louder and George moves to block them from Tuck’s view. “Uncle George says it’s going to be all okay,” he assures the baby.
~*~*~
Izzie shows Rebecca her empty uterus and she still doesn’t believe her. Alex walks in. What’s going on? Izzie tells him she paged him 20 minutes ago.
When Rebecca argues that it’s still too see anything on the ultrasound, Izzie picks up a picture of a baby at six weeks. It’s a tiny spec, but it’s definitely there.
Alex tells Izzie to get out. Izzie sighs, handing over the charts and telling him what Sloan said, but Alex tells her to get out. Izzie leaves.
Alex looks at Rebecca’s charts. “There never was a baby.” Rebecca starts to apologize for losing their baby, but he again tells her that according to all her tests, there never was a baby. She continues to apologize. “Rebecca, you’re not hearing me.” No, she’s not.
~*~*~
Derek and Meredith are getting ready for the procedure, but Greta’s blood pressure starts to rise. A nurse steps up to whisper something to Meredith, and she freezes.
Derek: Is there a problem Dr. Grey?
Meredith: …Andre’s here.
~*~*~
George rushes in to Tapley’s room, and Tapley tells him that he likes George’s work. George is surprised and asks if he could tell The Chief that because he was held back as an intern. Tapley assures George that “Webber would not have made that decision lightly. Learning is like healing, it happens over time. Listen,” he tells George, “Keep running. But not because you want to cut corners, because it makes you a better doctor.”
George nods as The Chief enters. “You’re not supposed to be talking.” They were just talking about how it was amazing that “you haven’t killed me yet.”
“There’s always tomorrow.”
~*~*~
Izzie walks buy Cristina sitting alone in the hallway, and finally asks, “Are you okay?”
“Don’t ask me if I’m okay,”
“Okay.”
Cristina lets out a disgusted breath. “You make me sick. Have some fire, be unstoppable. Be a force of nature. Be better than anyone here.” She tells Lexie to stop caring what other people think. She’s on her own here so “Be on your own.”
Lexie starts to leave, then stops, reminding her that while Cristina was doing charts and sulking she “just saw the inside of Walter Tapley’s heart and that is something that you will never take away from me.”
“Okay,” Cristina says.
“Okay.”
~*~*~
George brings in Tapley’s file for Bailey, asking if she and her husband figured anything out. He offers to take Tuck for a while so they can try.
~*~*~
Alex and Izzie argue about Rebecca again. He assures her that he can take care of it. All he wants is some of her “girl clothes” so that he can go start. Izzie watches sadly as Alex goes into the next room to dress Rebecca.
~*~*~
George brings in tomorrow’s board and Dr. Tapley’s echo for The Chief, and he wants to know what George is doing with Dr. Bailey’s child.
Without missing a beat, George answers, “Dr. Bailey and I are in love, and I’ll be heading back to Vegas with her as soon as my divorce with Dr. Torres is final.”
“We need to write Adele again,” The Chief answers. His wife wrote him back, but it was a typo. George takes a look at his phone. That’s not a typo that’s a wink.
“That’s a semicolon and a parentheses.”
“Turn it sideways.”
“She’s flirting, Sir.”
“Oh. Oh that’s good!”
“Yeah!”
George starts to leave and The Chief stops him to tell him, “Good work today.”
George walks out with Tuck telling him, “You know what that was? That was the atta boy!” He tells the baby about his exhausting day, but at least he got the ‘atta boy’. “And you are going to get that punching under control, right? Oh you and me, huh? Boy it takes us awhile, but we get there.”
~*~*~
Derek and Meredith stand by Greta’s bed. Unfortunately the swelling in Greta’s brain means that she probably won’t wake up. Meredith apologizes to Andre for not believing that he was coming…that he was real.
Andre talks about finding Greta’s shoe and how the whole thing was like a fairytale. But in fairytales they always wake up, right? So she might wake up?
Derek shakes his head sadly.
Meredith (VO): Don’t wonder why people go crazy…wonder why they don’t. And in the face of all we can lose in a day…*Meredith leaves, unable to watch Andre cry over Greta anymore* In an instant…Wonder what the hell it is that makes us hold it together.
~*~*~
Sloan enters the elevator to find Callie and Hahn.
Sloan: Ladies.
Callie: He’s thinking about a threesome.
Sloan: I am not.
Callie: You are. He has been, allllll day.
Sloan: Okay fine, I got a new leaf, not a lobotomy.
Hahn: You couldn’t handle the two of us.
Sloan: Oh I could. But I won’t, but I could.
Hahn: You wouldn’t find it intimidating?
Sloan: Not at all.
To prove her point, Hahn kisses Callie, surprising them both.
Hahn: See? Too much for you.
Hahn exits, leaving Callie in shock. Sloan tells her to meet him in the on-call room. “Right now.”
~*~*~
Derek spots Rose and asks her if she wants to go to dinner, but she tells him she can’t. They spend one night together and then he vanishes? He tells her that he’s already done complicated, can’t they just do fun? “Happy?” They don’t need the fairytale yet.
She take his hand.
~*~*~
Meredith is back at the therapists, much to the other woman’s surprise. She sits down on the couch, trying not to cry.
Meredith: My mother tried to kill herself when I was a kid. After the love of her life disappeared. I never told anybody that before.
“Okay.”
“So you think I’m broken? Fix me. Because I’m no quitter, let’s go.”
