Grey’s Anatomy: Freedom Part II

October 15th 2008 08:06
Alex brings in Rebecca and Izzie is the first person who spots him. He tells her he’s got it.

~*~*~

Derek tells Beth’s parents that they have yet to have a positive outcome, but Meredith wants to continue. As does Beth. Her parents don’t want to lose her, and she assures them that they won’t. “Because I’m not finished.” She wants to do this for Jeremy. “He’d be so mad if I just gave up.” She asks Derek to do the surgery today.

~*~*~

Callie tells Lola that Andy’s asking for her. Lola asks if he’s okay, and Callie tells him he’s definitely not okay. She notices that Lola really does care about him. “He’s my friend. I know I told you he wasn’t, but…he’s my friend,” Lola tells her. When her friends start making fun of her, Callie tells her “screw what they think. This matters, they don’t.” Lola tells her she can’t help Andy.

“You’re gonna hate yourself for this, later,” Callie tells her. “You’re gonna hate yourself and you’ll be right.”

~*~*~

George is paranoid that the files don’t look right. Lexie can’t help telling him everything she found in everyone’s files. George doesn’t want to know this! They need to get out quick before someone finds them! George turns and knocks off a bowl of M&Ms. Great. Now they have to pick them up, and Lexie’s still rambling on about her photographic memory and everything she just found in the files. “One point!” George tells her to just forget about it, but she again reminds him of her photographic memory. She can’t forget! George glares at her.

~*~*~

Derek is upset with Meredith for forcing him into continuing with this surgery. He argues that Beth just lost the love of her life, how can Meredith want to do this? She argues how can he not?

Derek: It’s not me with the big ego, it’s you. You backed me into a corner there, what was I supposed to say, no?

Meredith: Derek—

Derek: I can’t. She’s a kid.

Meredith: She’s a kid who’s gonna die without this surgery.

Derek: She’s a kid who’ll die with the surgery . That’s what you and I do together, we kill things. Over and over and over again. We’ve killed 12 people, and now because of you I will kill a thirteenth. When Beth’s surgery’s over we’re done. I don’t want to see to you, I don’t want to talk to you, we’re done.

~*~*~

The Chief tells Andy that they’re ready to begin and he asks for Lola. Callie tells him that she couldn’t find him. He doesn’t believe her. Lola used to like to hang out with him “before I did this.” He tells her that once there “could have been a kiss, but I chickened out.” Callie tells him that maybe she isn’t someone he should be kissing, but Andy assures her that his whole life is about kissing Lola.

The catheter is in and the guy are ready to take off the last of the cement pieces. Andy is glad that the hard part is almost over, but he notices all the doctors getting ready for something. Bailey tells him that once the last piece is taken off, there is a good chance that all the built up toxins will rush to his heart and he’ll crash. She assures him that it’s okay, they’ll bring him back. “We are good at what we do.” She tells him not to go into the warm welcoming light. Andy lets out a scared laugh.

“One…two…three.” The last piece of concrete is taken off and Andy crashes. All the doctors quickly get to work on bringing him back.

~*~*~

In her therapist’s office, Meredith is frustrated. “I don’t know what you mean when you say she didn’t want to die.”

“When you were sitting on the floor with your mother, what did she say to you?”

Meredith thinks this over, agitated. “She told me to be extraordinary. She said that she had failed but that I should be extraordinary, that I shouldn’t depend on one. “Be an extraordinary woman Meredith” is what she said.”

“And so you became a surgeon, just like her.”

“Yes.”

Her therapist tells her that that means she has all the tools to figure this out for herself. Meredith tries to talk, but she interrupts, “You need to work this through Meredith. I promise you when you do you’ll be glad.”

~*~*~

Derek is trying to get ready for the surgery, but it’s clearly bothering him. He shoves everything to the floor. He does not want to do this surgery.

~*~*~

Lexie tells George that her head is exploding, and he simply tells her to “make it unexplode.” Lexie is confused. Is he mad at her? No. “Then why are you talking to me in that voice?”

“There’s no voice.”

She thinks there is, and George tells her that she just reminded him that he’s him. “The almost guy.” All that separates him from the rest of his class is ONE point? One little point, that’s it? “I mean I would have been okay if it was 50 points,” he tells her. “Or even ten points, but one? That means that it was right there. It was in my hands and I let it slip away. I didn’t want to know that. Do you get that?” He’s been killing himself for one point? “You didn’t do me a favor, don’t kid yourself,” he tells her.

She tries to make it up to him by telling him that at least now he knows he has what it takes.

“Yeah,” George answers a little too curtly.

~*~*~

Alex is finishing up on Rebecca’s bandages, telling Izzie that she doesn’t need any drugs or psych. Izzie insists that she needs a psych consult in order to be admitted. Alex isn’t planning on admitting her. He’s taking her home whether Izzie likes it or not. He yells at her to leave them alone and goes back to Rebecca. Izzie is shocked at his outburst. Technically Rebecca was admitted under her watch…

~*~*~

Sloan tells Callie that she needs to rest her legs, that’s what the breaks are for. Callie admits that she was turned on by his dirty talk, and Sloan tells her it wasn’t him, it was what he was talking about. Callie tries to deny it, but he just tells her, “Callie, it’s okay. I wish I was all someone thought about.”

~*~*~

Lexie sits down next to George in the surgical observation deck. “You had 14 letters of recommendation.” George changes seats to get away from her but she follows. “Cristina had 8, Izzie had ten, but you had 14. And the words they used to describe you? Nobody had recommendations like yours.”

George doesn’t say anything so Lexie continues. “People said the others were smart. They said they were hard workers, they said that they were good. But your letters? They said you were great. They spoke of your kindness, your attention to detail. They talked about how hard you try and that you never give up. They painted a picture of the kind of doctor that I hope to become. It was an honor to read those letters, because now I know that what separates you from the others isn’t one stupid point. What separates you from the others is greatness. So don’t you dare let that one point hold you back.”

With that, Lexie leaves.

~*~*~

Izzie goes to Bailey for help with Rebecca. Bailey tells her she’s doing her job, Izzie needs to do hers. Izzie tells her she can’t. She doesn’t know what to do, but Bailey tells her she does.

“Okay I’ll try.”

No, she doesn’t need to try. Bailey reminds her that she was trained “by me” and that she has all the skills she needs to do this. Izzie walks off in defeat.

~*~*~

Bailey goes back in and The Chief congratulates Cristina on her good work. They get ready for the next step with Andy now that Hahn, Sloan, and Callie are done. Andy’s monitor’s start to beep.

~*~*~

Derek watches as Beth gets wheeled down for her surgery. Nurse Rose tells him she thinks she liked him better when he was saying all that boring science stuff. She feels for him.

“I’m never good enough,” Derek says, staring out the window. “No matter what I say, no matter what I do. I never wanted to do this. This clinical trial is making me a failure. I fail her over, and over, and over…”

“You mean them. When you say “fail her” you mean fail them, the patients.” Rose leaves.

~*~*~

Andy is coding. The Chief calls for Hahn and Cristina tells him that she can do it. It’ll take her seconds, she’s done it before with Burke. The Chief tells Bailey to take over the CPR. “Yang, I’m right here if you need me.” Cristina gets to work.

~*~*~

Derek walks into the OR to tell Beth one last time that she doesn’t have to do this.

“Come on,” she teases. “What are you, scared?”

“Yes.”

Beth gets serious. “Me too. So let’s just leap. Okay?”

Derek smiles. “Okay.” He nods for them to start.

~*~*~

Hahn walks in and immediately starts criticizing Christina’s work. She orders Christina to let her take over, and Christina interrupts, “Just shut up and let me work!”

Appalled, Hahn turns to The Chief. He calmly tells her, “Let her work Dr. Hahn.”

~*~*~

The Chief checks the boards and notices that Derek scheduled two patients. Rose tells him that Dr. Grey said she cleared it with you. At The Chief’s reaction, she stammers, “I could be wrong.” He doesn’t think she is.

~*~*~

Beth made it through the surgery, but Derek’s not optimistic. He tells Meredith she can go.

~*~*~

The Chief finds Hahn and tells her that “Yang flew solo. You should be celebrating because that means that you’re doing your job. Teaching her how to save a life. Residents are like puppies. Eager and enthusiastic, and you need to learn how to teach without crushing their spirit. Now you want to work here, with MY residents? Then you need to do better. You need to be a better teacher.”

Hahn gets up and walks away without a word. She stops when she spots Cristina, who shrinks away.

The Chief notices. “Don’t make me regret backing you up.”

“No sir. Absolutely not, Sir. Thank you, Sir.”

The Chief shakes his head. “Puppies…” He leaves.

Cristina finally smiles.

~*~*~

Izzie introduces Rebecca to a psychologist who is going to ask her some questions while she talks to Alex. She finally stands up to him. If he tries to take her out, she’s going to have him arrested. He doesn’t have this. Alex tells her he’s going to take Rebecca home. She grabs his arm. No he’s not . What is she going to restrain him? If he she has to. Is he going to hit a girl? If he has to.

Izzie tries to get through to him that by taking her home, he could be putting Rebecca into even more trouble, but Alex argues that he can take care of her. “I took care of my mom, and I can take care of her.”

Izzie is shocked. “You’ve done this before…”

“I have done this before,” he replies. “I have done this BEFORE. But I was a kid then and I’m a man now. I have DONE THIS before.”

“Stop,” she says quietly. “You don’t have to say anything.”

~*~*~

Meredith goes home after a long days work and enters the kitchen…only to find the remains of Rebecca’s accident. She stops dead in her tracks.

Meredith scrubs furiously at the blood. Talk about having done this before…

~*~*~

George sits in the Burn unit as The Chief shows up. “You’re here early.” No, he just never went home. George tells The Chief how Andy’s night went and when The Chief tells him “good job”, George tells him that this is not a good job for him. None of this. “Because I’m better than that, and you know I’m better than that.” He tells The Chief that he’s not everyone else, he gets that he “doesn’t have the personality of a surgeon.” Maybe that’s why he thought he didn’t deserve a second chance when everyone else has got one. “I deserve a second chance.”

“Okay.”

“Okay?”

“Okay you can retake the test.”

The Chief leaves. “Okay,” George whispers.

~*~*~

Beth’s parents ask when they’ll have to start worrying about when Beth might now wake up, and Meredith doesn’t answer.

~*~*~

Callie walks out to find Lola in the waiting room. Lola admits that she likes him and Callie is furious. “He knows you and you’re worried about what your friends think?” Lola asks “you think this is easy?” and Callie tells her that she thinks it’s better to be honest. Andy is alive. Barely, but he is alive.

~*~*~

Alex tells Rebecca he called her husband. “He says he took the baby and left two months ago. He says…” Alex sits down at her bed. “You have something called underlying borderline personality disorder. Which means you were fragile to start with, so this…this has probably been coming on for a while. Probably since your accident.” Since they changed her face…”You need help Rebecca, and I can’t give it to you.” He tells her that she’s going to stay here tonight and tomorrow they’ll transfer her to a psychiatric facility.

“I’m sorry,” she whispers. “I really tried. I wanted to be better for you. I know how hard it is for you to trust people and I wanted to be someone you could depend on. I’m sorry…I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay, you tried.”

~*~*~

The Chief stops Meredith in the hallway. “So you convinced Shepherd to do the surgery without my approval.”

“So?” she asks.

“So? That’s how you speak to The Chief? So.”

She tells him that her mother tried to kill herself after he left. “Did you know that?”

No, he didn’t. He starts to apologize, and Meredith asks him how he could do that to such a talented, gifted, extraordinary surgeon. Suddenly something hits her and she leaves.

~*~*~

Meredith barges in on her therapist.

“Tell me.”

“She was a surgeon,” Meredith says. “She was an excellent surgeon. If she was really trying to kill herself she wouldn’t have slit her wrists. She knew better, she would have taken the scalpel and cut her carotid artery. It would have taken seconds to die. She didn’t really want to die. She was an excellent, gifted, extraordinary surgeon . She didn’t really want to die.”

“What did she want?”

“She wanted Richard to come back.”

Why didn’t he? Because he never knew about it and she was too stubborn to ask! Her therapist wonders what that means, and Meredith says, “That part I don’t know, could you just tell me that part for once?”

She can. “It means that you are a gifted, talented, extraordinary surgeon just like your mother. But the difference is, you get to learn from her mistakes.”

“Be extraordinary.” Meredith thinks about this a second. “She wasn’t talking about surgery.”

“No she wasn’t.”

“She wasn’t talking about surgery at all…”

~*~*~

Andy wakes up and Bailey smiles. “Well do I or do I not keep my promises?”

“You do.”

“And remember what I said about the bigger picture?”

“Yeah?”

Lola steps up to take his hand. She brushes back his hair and kisses him. Callie and Bailey smile.

Callie: He’s been waiting his whole life for that, huh?

Bailey: Yes he has.

~*~*~

Callie gets into the elevator with Alex and notices he’s not himself. She asks if he’s okay but he just steps out of the elevator without a word.

Rose and Meredith look at Beth’s MRI scans. The tumor is shrinking. The virus is working. They’re both excited.

Meredith tells her to go tell Derek, and Rose tells her that SHE needs to go tell him. It’s something he’d want to hear from her. She starts to leave and Meredith calls her back. Rose just congratulates her on their major medical breakthrough. “It’s the stuff of legends.” She heads out.

~*~*~

Meredith rushes in to grab the wine bottle from the fridge and Cristina tells her she needs to take the Sparkle Pager back because “I am drunk on the power.”

Meredith asks, “Where is it?” And Cristina just tells her she thinks the pager might actually be mystical. She tosses it back to Meredith, who grabs her coat and rushes out as Lexie runs in. “You paged Dr. Yang?”

“Grab that banana from my cubby.”

Lexie’s face falls. She grabs the banana. “You want me to peel it for you?”

No, she wants her to learn the running whip stitch. “I’m gonna teach it to you.”

~*~*~

Derek notices Beth’s mother crying and goes into Beth’s room to find her awake.

“Hi.”

“Hey.”

“You’re alive.”

“I’m alive.”

Beth takes his hand with her not working arm. “Not just for show anymore.”

Derek smiles. “No.”

~*~*~

Derek walks in and grabs the wine bottle out of the trash. Lexie and Cristina look up.

Cristina: That’s not sanitary.

Derek leaves and Cristina leans over to have a look at Lexie’s stitches. “A little closer together, try again.”

Lexie starts to thank her, but Cristina just cuts her off. “Uh-huh.” Lexie can’t help but smile.

~*~*~

Bailey asks Izzie how it went, and at Izzie’s sharp reply, she hands over the keys to the clinic. Izzie is confused. Why is she giving her her keys to the clinic? Bailey tells her she’s not giving her her keys to the clinic, she’s giving her the clinic.

She’s seen the bigger picture. She loves the clinic, but not more than she loves surgery, being Chief Resident, and her family. So she has to let some pieces go. She gives this piece to Izzie. “You have grown into a fine Dr. Izzie Stevens,” Bailey tells her tearfully.

Izzie thanks her and Bailey tells her to “make me proud.”

~*~*~

And the last 7 minutes? Well, you REALLY just have to watch it:

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Ahhhhhhh! I love that ending!! Poor Alex. And the candle House? Awwwwww! Finally a happy ending! So how long do we think this is going to last? LoL

I was totally on Meridith's side in the roommate thing, though. Maybe if you agree to move in with someone, you should discuss the roommates' status before you just decide to kick them out without talking to them about it. So not cool. And it's not like everyone has millions of dollars like Derek and can just go somewhere else at the drop of a hat.
I liked Mark and Lexie's storyline quite a bit. Also, I liked when Callie told Hahn at the end that she would not be shaving off pieces of herself to fit into the relationship - quite a bit of growth.
If you missed any parts of the episode i would say go and watch it on www.abc.com!

I can't wait for tonight's episode it looks like we are finally going to have Meredith open up to Derek this might be the make or break discussion for them.
