Free Falling
The fifth-year residents return for the first day of a year that will make or break their careers: Meredith faces the consequences of tampering with Derek's clinical trial and is terminated at the hospital; April tries to step up to the plate as Chief Resident in the wake of a giant sinkhole in the middle of Seattle; and Cristina and Owen are still at odds over their drastically different feelings for their unborn child.
She's Gone
News of Meredith and Derek's unsteady relationship raises a red flag for Zola's adoption counselor; Alex quickly realizes that he has become the outcast of the group after ratting out Meredith; and Cristina makes a tough decision regarding her unexpected pregnancy. Also, Chief Webber brings Henry in for a last minute surgery, alarming Teddy.
Meredith: Even good marriages fail. One minute you're standing on solid ground, the next minute, you're not. And there're always two versions - yours and theirs. Both versions start the same way though; both start with two people falling in love.

Owen: They're living together. In your house, Kepner says.
Derek: This is my house. Did she say how they're doing?
Owen: No. I didn't ask. I don't care. Do you want me to ask, for you?
Derek: No. I don't care either.

The Chief: You're fired.

Jackson: I'm kind of busy.
Mark: Yeah, turning that guy into Frankenstein.

Meredith: What did I do? What did I do?

Cristina: What?
Meredith: I have a plan.
Cristina: Okay.
Meredith: I'm gonna be a mom.
Cristina: Mer, there's a giant sinkhole, Teddy is all over me, don't page me 911 unless you have a serious...
Meredith: This is serious! Maybe getting fired was a good thing. What cheerful people say when something crappy happens and they make it sound like it wasn't crappy?
Cristina: A blessing in disguise?
Meredith: Yeah. Maybe that's what this is. This is that. And I can make jam and drive carpool and have play groups. And maybe that's enough. And maybe I'll be a great mom.
Cristina: Okay. I'm gonna vomit, call me when Meredith comes back.

Meredith: Do you have what it takes? If your marriage is in trouble, can you weather the storm? When the ground gives way and your world collapses, maybe you just need to have faith and trust that you can survive this together. Maybe you just need to hold on tight and no matter what, don't let go.

Meredith: I think I stole a baby.

Derek: Yang, where's Meredith?
Cristina: I don't know, they fired her. Maybe she's putting anthrax in Karev's locker.

Alex: You're supposed to have my back, I made a mistake. You have to forgive me. You guys are all I have.

Owen: You'd cut off my leg for me wouldn't you?
Christina: Well I wouldn't botch it like that guy did. I'd leave you with a nice stump so you could get prosthesis.

Meredith: You think that true love is the only thing that can crush your heart, that will take your life and light it up or destroy it. Then you become a mother.
