Glee: Laryngitis

November 16th 2010 21:11

Forced to shave his Mohawk because of a worrisome mole his mom found while washing his hair, Puck (Mark Salling) suddenly finds himself no longer at the top of the high school social ladder. Brittnay doesn’t even recognize him, and all the nerds he dumped in the trash over the years are ready for some payback. Okay, fine. He wearily waits for them to dump him in the trash then just lays there and thinks that he should just stay there and wait to be crushed, because “what’s the point of living when you suck so bad?” As he’s lying there, he hears someone singing. Wait a minute, he knows that voice. Sitting up, Puck spots Mercedes (Amber Riley) in her Cheerios track uniform and comes up with a great idea. Mercedes (whose name he can’t quite remember right now) used to be a nobody, and now she’s one of the most popular girls in school. All he has to do is date her, and he’ll be back on track.

Puck’s plans to seduce Mercedes (he’s discovered “blacks and Jews have a long history of sticking up for each other”) don’t go over as easily as he thought they would, when she tells him that she has no interest in him. They have nothing in common and he’s kind of a jerk. Musically speaking, she explains, “You’re Top 40, I’m Rhythm & Blues.” She doesn’t fall for his moves and heads back to class.

Determined not to give up, Puck finally wins her over with the Sammy Davis Jr. number, “Lady Is A Tramp”, and Mercedes is surprised. She never saw them working out together, but now she kind of likes him. Worried about her, Quinn finds her after class, and Mercedes assures her she knows exactly what Puck’s doing. But unlike Quinn, she’s never had a guy like her for anything before, popularity or no, and is sure her heart is safe. Oh, Quinn wasn’t worried about her heart, but not even Puck will be able to fend off Santana (Naya Rivera). Uh-oh. Mercedes didn’t think about that. They duke it out in song. “The boy is mine!” When Mercedes spots Puck throwing kids back into the dumpster, she breaks up with him. That guy? The guy throwing nerds into the trash? She doesn’t like him. And she’s pretty sure he doesn’t either. Realizing she’s not being the person she wants to be, Mercedes quits the Cheerios.

Meanwhile, Rachel has discovered an alarming truth. She’s basically the only one singing at rehearsals! With the help of the AV club, she bugs the choir room and takes the tapes to Mr. Schuester. He’s disappointed to find out that she’s right. Why aren’t they singing? They all have their excuses, and he tells them that a Glee Club is all about “a myriad of voices coming together as one” . Their assignment for the week is for each of them to find a song that represents who they are right now in their life, and every one of them is going to stand up and sing a solo.

Rachel goes first, singing “The Climb” because it’s about overcoming obstacles, in this case her lack-luster fellow Glee members, and as she sings an awful version of the Miley Cyrus song, Mr. Schuester gently pulls her aside and tells her he thinks she’s lost her voice. On NO! Horrified that her life is over, Rachel goes to the doctor with Finn, where she learns that she’ll never sing again. Ha, no, the doctor was just kidding. She just needs to have her tonsils taken out. This is not good news for Rachel, who is afraid she’ll never sing again (“I need applause to live!”).

Kurt’s really excited about his assignment, he knows who he is, but gets sidetracked when he spots his dad in the hall. Burt (Mike O'Malley) tells him he’s there to pick up Finn (Cory Monteith) so they can go to a game together. Feeling more left out than ever, Kurt suddenly becomes a completely different person, singing a Mellencamp song while dressed in plaid and agreeing to date Brittnay so his dad can see how much he’s like him. Everyone notices how strange he’s acting, and concerned, Mr. Schuester pulls Kurt aside and tells him that the song he chose didn’t sound much like him. Kurt grimly apologizes if he didn’t live up to his expectations, but will tells him that’s not what he meant. Kurt can literally do things that no one else can, they need him to be himself. Mr. Schue tells Kurt, “Don’t lose track of who you are just because it might be easier to be somebody else.”

Kurt’s dad blows off hanging out with Finn when he realizes how much it’s hurting Kurt, and, watching his son’s heartfelt and angry rendition of “Rose’s Turn” (“I had a dream, I dreamed it for you dad, it wasn’t for me dad”), he tells Kurt that he’s his son and he loves him no matter what. He doesn’t need to change. Kurt hugs his dad, telling him he missed him.

After Rachel complain about her ruined life, Finn takes her to visit an old football buddy of his who’s paralyzed. She thinks she has it bad? What about him? He tells her about his accident and how he was angry for a long time after it, but that he realized that he was more than just a football player. He’s actually really good at math and he can sing too. His only regret is not having the guts to try out for his school’s Glee Cub like Finn. Rachel realizes that she was being way too overly dramatic, and after her laryngitis goes away with a major dose of antibiotics and a vow of silence, she goes back to Finn’s friend and offers to give him singing lessons. She realizes that she’s more than just her voice. She’ll probably have to have her tonsils out eventually, but she’s not scared anymore. The club sings U2’s “One” together.
