Extras

The creators of the original Office have another lesser known comedy called Extras, which was until recently airing on ABC Wednesday nights. It’s pretty hilarious.
Patrick Stewart: I will "Make It So."
[Andy looks at him blankly]
Patrick Stewart: You've seen "Star Trek: The Next Generation?"
Patrick Stewart: Why? Your wife won't let you have it on?
Andy Millman: I'm not married.
Patrick Stewart: Oh, your girlfriend then?
Andy Millman: I haven't got a girlfriend either. I live alone.
Patrick Stewart: You're not married, you haven't got a girlfriend... and you've never watched "Star Trek?"
Andy Millman: No.
Patrick Stewart: Good Lord...
I know, I know. Some of us turn up our noses at anything on the ABC, or anything British. Well shame on us. The wry cynical exchanges in this show are bloody priceless. And I get a kick out of seeing them play up the drama queen antics and behind the scenes behaviour of actors and directors on elaborate film sets.
Ricky Gervais (the creator both The Office and Extras) stars as the main character Andy Millman, an extra who works on various movie sets but just can‘t catch a serious career break. His best friend Maggie Jacobs is a fellow (ditzy) extra, who is more concerned with getting herself a boyfriend than taking her job too seriously. The highlight is seeing the cameos of various high profile movie stars who make fun of themselves each week. Guest stars have included Samuel L Jackson, Kate Winslet, Ben Stiller and Orlando Bloom, and upcoming guest stars include Daniel Radcliffe and Steven Fry.
There’s something to be said for British comedy. Let’s face it, American sitcoms are getting less and less funny, and Australian comedy is basically non-existent these days. It’s nice to have a decent, genuine comedy series like this to watch. It is a MUST for fans of The Office or Arrested Development.
