Doctor Who - The Satan Pit
September 10th 2006 05:50
Last night’s Doctor Who was the conclusion of a fantastic two-parter, and this one was called "The Satan Pit". The Doctor and Rose are stranded on a planet circling a Black Hole, which is inexplicably prevented from being sucked inside. An evil presence lurking beneath the earth emerges and starts to possess members of the crew and their servant alien race, the ‘Ood.’ In the conclusion, the Doctor comes face to face with the evil force responsible, a gigantic Satan-like creature that will scare the bejesus out of you. He is faced with the task of saving the universe from destruction, while Rose fights for her life above.
The Brits could show us a thing or two about quality TV. David Tennant is unbelievably talented and funny as the scathing, witty Tenth Doctor (and he‘s certainly nice on the eyes). As someone who has never seen the old series, and has no intention to (no matter what amount of prodding she might get from certain parents), I think the 2005/2006 series is completely watchable for people unfamiliar with the mythology of the old days. The special effects are surprisingly well done, and the humour has a faint Buffyish tinge to it (Yes, I know I make this comparison a lot, but come on. It’s Buffy. The pedestal to which every show is measured).
There’s something for the boys and the girls with this one. Billie Piper proves her acting ability surpasses her skills as a sugary teen pop star, and the chemistry between her and the Doctor is an incredibly good reason for the girliest, non sci-fi fan around (a.k.a me) to tune in every week. Plus there are cool aliens and violence and stuff. You know. Everybody wins.
