5 Do-it-yourself TV-themed gifts

December 12th 2008 23:50
In these tough times money is tight and morale is low, so why not cheer up your best fanboy or girl with these easy to make gifts based on your favorite shows?

1. Anatomy Jane: The Paper Doll Version

That’s right, remember paper dolls? Back in the day before virtual “Twinky dolls”, we had real paper cut-outs ,with real tabs, that really fell off when you tried to send your paper girl to the paper mall with her paper boy. Inspired by this season’s Grey’s Anatomy episode “Life During Wartime”, this is the perfect gift for anyone! From five-year-olds with depressed doctor mothers, to your average therapy-hating residents, this gift is easy to make and educational too.

Supplies: Paper. Colored pencils. Scissors.

Instructions:

1. Visit the Popular Human Body Printables for your choice of immune system, anatomy, or the five senses.
2. Start cutting. (Don’t forget the tabs! May need slits in doll for smaller organs.)
3. Print all systems for maximum dressup fun!

(Note: Will need to print at least two. One to gut, one to cut. Requires the ability to draw legs and face yourself.)

2. EMF Detector

Inspired by Sam Winchester’s own walkman-turned-EMF detector, here’s a way to make your own!

(click for larger version)

Description:
This lovely circuit is a real gem! Easy to assemble and more sensitive than many commercial devices available. It's based around an LF351 low-noise operational amplifier and a 1mF choke acting as the sensor. Unlike most other simple EMF detectors, this one has a meter output for accurate reading, but alternatively, you can also roughly estimate the frequency of the field by plugging in headphones. It can detect any field from 50Hz to 100kHz, making it highly versatile and a worthwhile addition to any hobbyist's workbench.

Or for proper Supernatural instructions, please call Dean Winchester for his brother's number: 1-866-907-3235. (Update: The number has been disabled due to phone being destroyed.)

3. Pie-Hole inspired Pies

Who doesn’t like pie around the holidays? Inspired by Ned’s own famous Pushing Daisies Pie-Hole recipes, this one’s a treat sure to make even the most agoraphobic aunts venture a trip outside!

Ned's Four-berry Pie

For the Filling:

•3 cups blueberries (fresh are best)
•1 cup blackberries or boysenberries
•1 cup raspberries
•1 cup cranberries
•2 tablespoons of butter
•1 teaspoon of cinnamon
•2/3 cup flour
•1-2 cups sugar

For the Crust:

•2 cups of flour
•2/3 cup, plus 1 tablespoon shortening
•1 teaspoon salt
•1 tablespoon sugar
•1/4 cup of ice water

1. Make the Crust

2. Combine flour, salt, and sugar. Mix with a fork. Add shortening and mix with a pastry blender or a fork until well combined. Add ice water and mix lightly with a fork until dough is able to be formed into a ball. Spray pie pan lightly with a non-stick cooking spray. Use approximately half of the dough to form the bottom crust and the remainder for the top crust.

3. Make the Pie:

4. Preheat oven to 425°F.

5. Mix flour, sugar and cinnamon in a bowl. Mix all berries in a separate bowl. Add half of the dry ingredients with the berries.

6. Place a layer of berry mixture in pie pan and top with part of the remaining dry ingredients, continue until all berries and dry ingredients are used.

7. Dot the top with butter. Top with crust. Brush top crust lightly with water and sprinkle with sugar.

8. Bake in preheated oven for approximately 40-45 minutes -- until juices are bubbly and crust is browned.

9. Cool completely and serve.

4. Clorox ™ pen T-shirts!

Great for any and every show, this one’s super easy! All you need is a black t-shirt and a Clorox ™ pen.

Instructions:

1. Put a piece of newspaper between the front and back of the black t-shirt.

2. Write your favorite quote/tagline/etc. from the show of your choice with the Clorox ™ pen.

3. Let sit overnight.

4. Remove newspaper and wash shirt.

5. Wear fanshirt proudly!

5. Jasper The Pig

Inspired by the Bones episode “The Blonde in the Game”, this little guy will be sure to cheer up even the most depressed partners.

Instructions:

You need:
•2 cups baking soda
•1 cup corn starch
•1 cup of water
•2 quart saucepan
•wax paper
•Poster or acrylic paints
•Colored felt-tip markers

What to do:

1. Stir the baking soda, cornstarch and water together in the saucepan. Heat for a few minutes over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture is the thickness of mashed potatoes.

2. Remove the pan from the heat and scrape the mixture onto a piece of wax paper. You've made a kind of clay. Allow it to cool for at least ten minutes.

3. With your hands, roll the cool clay into a ball, then flatten the ball on the wax paper. Keep rolling and flattening the clay until it is smooth.

4. Watch episode while molding clay into proper Jasper shape.

5. All pig to dry overnight or until hard.

6. Color with markers, paint, etc.

7. Give to partner.

(Note: To keep clay from drying out, seal inside plastic bag and put into refrigerator until next Jasper-making day!)

Well there you have it. 5 Do-it-yourself TV-themed gifts that are sure to bring a smile to that special someone. *runs off to make her own Jasper* Enjoy!

All Next Week's Promos in One Place

November 14th 2008 22:21
Okay guys, here it is. I don't know about you, but I find it annoying trying to go searching for all the "next week" promos for all my favorite shows, so here they are. All the promos for next week I could find in one place. Enjoy!

Bones:

LoL! I can't wait, this one looks great!

Supernatural:

Ahhhhhh! No words, no words for this one, just hurry up and be Thursday already!

Californication:

LoL Poor Hank.

Chuck (same promo, first one with subtitles ):

Hmmm...wonder how long the new girl's staying around?

Grey's Anatomy:

Whoa, whoa, whoa, what? Thanks to the weather knocking out our ABC station, I have four weeks of Grey's to catch up on! Ahhh!

Heroes:

I hope Hiro gets his powers back!

House:

I'm really liking this awkwardness with House and Cuddy and Wilson trying to get them together. LoL

Private Practice:

Actually it's only one week. The CMAs pre-empted it this week.

Okay, that's all I could find for now. If you have any requests, let me know and I'll try and find them.

Only eight days until this year's Emmy Awards on ABC. I'm not really sure how I feel about them going the "reality way" (Tom Bergeron, Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel, Jeff Probst, and Ryan Seacrest as hosts? Really? Hmmm…) But it's one of those things that could go either way, brilliant or a bomb, and I'm going to hope for the best...

Here's the updated list of presenters:

•'Desperate Housewives' -- Marcia Cross, Dana Delany, Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Eva Longoria Parker and Nicollette Sheridan -- presenting together
•Hugh Laurie and Julia Louis-Dreyfus
•Tina Fey & Amy Poehler presenting together
•America Ferrera
•Laurence Fishburne & William Petersen presenting together
•Jennifer Love Hewitt
•Hayden Panettiere
•Vanessa Williams
•Kristin Chenoweth & Neil Patrick Harris presenting together
•Kathy Griffin & Don Rickles presenting together
•Conan O'Brien
•Christian Slater
•Kate Walsh
•Christina Applegate
•David Boreanaz
•Wayne Brady
•Lauren Conrad
•Kiefer Sutherland

Also, Josh Groban will be there to perform television’s greatest theme songs live!
From abc.com:
Josh Groban, who recorded last year's No. 1-selling CD, will perform a once in a lifetime medley of more than 25 of television's most memorable themes on The 60th Primetime Emmy® Awards, airing live, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 21 (8:00-11:00 p.m., ET/PT) on ABC.

"In honor of the Emmy Awards' 60th Anniversary, Josh's medley will touch on some of television's most resonant theme songs -- including from Friends, The Simpsons, The Brady Bunch and many more -- the actual full list of show titles is being kept a secret until the show. This will truly be an unforgettable performance," said Executive Producer Ken Ehrlich.

Aaaaand…Don’t forget to keep voting for your “most memorable moments” in both comedy and drama. See who made it to the second round and vote HEREfor drama and HERE for comedy! To see a list of the nominees go HERE.
