Black Books
November 22nd 2006 10:29
So in trolling the TV for something interesting to watch the other night I stumbled on Black Books on the ABC. Bernard Black is the owner of a bookstore called Black Books, where the last thing they seem to do is actually sell books. He's bitter and moody and hates his customers. In this episode, they get a security system installed, only to lock Black out and his other worker Manny inside. Manny decides to seek out a survival handbook, and sets himself up with a bottle of liquid (booze), some flies to cook over the open fire, and a singalong to keep up his spirits.
On Tuesday night I was watching the Melbourne Comedy Gala on in place of Rove Live, only to discover the same actor Dylan Moran from Black Books doing a stand-up routine.
I recommend giving this show a look - it's pretty hilarious, in that quirky, dry British style of humour. Very remiscent of Extras. Look for it at 10:00 Monday nights on ABC.

Dylan Moran is a very funny man. He's touring the country again this year with his stand up. I'm going to see him in Brisbane in early April, but I'm not sure when he'll be in the other cities.

In fact, Simon Pegg, Jessica Stevenson & Nick Frost (from Spaced) have appeared in Black Books (also Dylan Moran & Tamsin Greig, along the above all appeared together in Sean of the Dead, another must see), further reinforcing the link.
The Extras comment aside (sorry,I do love Ricky Gervais & Steve Merchant but just can't stand Extras! Ah well, we'll always have The Office) - Dylan Moran is an extremely funny guy. His background is in stand up comedy (as is Bill Bailey's) and he was the youngest person to win the Perrier Comedy Award in 1996 at Edinburgh Festival. He has won 2 BAFTAs and his shows constantly sell out. Mix his Irish drunkenness with Bill Bailey's dry English humour and you have a damn funny mix - the show is an absolute MUST SEE as is just about anything by these guys. If you enjoy the show, check out Monster and Like Totally (two if his recent stand up shows)..
P.S. The booze is Absinthe (to ensure extra hilarity), and the 'flies' are bumble bees....
