And the Emmy goes to…

September 17th 2007 05:06
Tony Bennett! The legendary singer/songwriter’s special Tony Bennett: An American Classic won the most awards this year with 7 (including Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program and Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special), followed by the made for television movie Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee with 6. 30 Rock won for best comedy and (no surprise here) The Sopranos went out with a bang, becoming only the second show ever to win Best Drama after going off the air.

The Jameses went head to head, with a surprising result—Spader of Boston Legal ended up winning against fellow nominee Gandolfini. Upon accepting his award Spader said with surprise, "Oh my goodness, I feel like I just stole a pile of money from the mob—” Looks at the cast of The Sopranos. “And they're all sitting over there!"

Tina Fey thanked 30 Rock’s “dozens and dozens of viewers” upon their win and Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert decided that, since winner, "Ricky Gervais could not be here tonight. Instead we're going to give this to our friend, Steve Carell!" Who then proceeded to jump onstage for a hilariously great group hug.

Early in the show Terry O’Quinn (a.k.a. John Locke) nabbed drama’s best supporting actor for his role on Lost, and Jeremy Piven won for his role on Entourage, joking, “I want to thank our entire crew, I don't know any of their names,"

Katherine Heigl’s win for Grey’s Anatomy came as a surprise to herself, and she thanked the announcer for pronouncing her name right (she said “Hei-gel” the first time), and stated that winning was a dream come true after 17 years in the business.

Perhaps the most notably difference about this year’s Emmy Awards was the fact that they were presented in theatre in the round—a.k.a. a trap-door-backstage and half the audience having to watch presenter’s and winner’s faces on screens like all of us at home. At first I didn’t like the stage, but once the show started and I saw how the visuals were going to work it was kind of cool.

This year’s host, Ryan Seacrest, wasn’t on stage for long, but one of those few times did include a showing of one of the costumes for this year’s winner, The Tudors—a fact that next presenter Wayne Brady sure got a kick out of.

For those of you who saw the show, hope you enjoyed watching, and for those of you who missed it, here’s a list of winners:
