AFI's 100 Years...100 Movies
June 19th 2007 03:09
Get ready for "AFI's 100 Years...100 Movies" 10 anniversary edition this Wednesday on CBS!
Technically this one is about movies, but it will be aired on TV, therefore it fits into the definition of tvchitchat.net.
100 years. In terms of the history of the universe it’s not that much, after all it would only be 1907, but when it comes to making movies, one hundred years is a very long time indeed. If you look up 1907 at imdb, you’ll come up with 560 matching titles. Look up 2007 and you’ll end up with 11,195 titles…and it’s only June.
Slipping out of my TV clothes and into my movie ones (which pretty much just means I now need shoes so I can be let into the theater…), I ask you, what’s your favorite movie? If you were the ones picking the top 100, what would you include?
I myself would have a terrible time coming up with only 100 movies to which I would deem “Best”. Personally, I have lots of different categories of “favorites”. There are the “Growing Up Favorites” like Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Clue, and the Back to the Future trilogy that I can watch over and over again no matter how many times I’ve already seen them. There are, of course, the “Film Student Favorites” like Casablanca, Citizen Kane, and Sunset Boulevard. I admit to a weakness for disaster movies, anything by M. Night Shyamalan (he writes, directs, and produces all his films!), and have my fair share of “stupid comedy” favorites. I don’t care what critics say, I like to laugh and I don’t need two thumbs up to do it!
At any rate, here are 7 movies over the past few years I’ve inducted into my personal top 100. Why 7 you ask? I don’t know, it just seems like the right number. I’m sure most people will argue whether or not they’re worthy to be added to the already agreed on classics, and feel free to add your own to the list! Whether they make the "official" AFI list or not this Wednesday, who knows, but we’ll still have fun watching!
• Lord of the Rings—All of them. ‘nough said.
• Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl—Johnny Depp again, enough said.
• The Harry Potter movies—my personal favorite being the Goblet of Fire
• Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind—I’ve found people either like it, find it too confusing to decide, or they hate it. Me? Love it.
• The Departed—The most fun I’ve had at a movie in a long time…Leonardo DiCaprio I do believe I’ve not given you proper credit over the years!
• Crash—Happy. Sad. I liked it. A lot.
• Blood Diamond—Not really a big jewelry person to begin with, now I’m glad. Once again, points for Leo and of course, Djimon Hounsou.
Who will make the list this year?

Most of teh quality films seem to be ignored at cinemas, thankfully they are getting a second life on DVD through word of mouth. (EG: Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, memento, Donnie Darko etc)
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is so well structured, the writing in sublime. Great mainstream entertainment, a rarity these days. You can read my KKBB review HERE, if your interested.
