15 TV Shows Based on Books

March 10th 2009 17:26
Have you ever wanted to delve deeper into the world of some of your favorite TV shows via the written word? And I'm not talking about fanfiction here, I'm talking about the books that came before the show. Those pieces of work (fiction or non-fiction, standalone or series) that someone out there in TV land picked up and said, "Hey, I'd like to see that on screen." Well, now's your chance! Here are 15 TV shows that were inspired by books.

Currently in production:

Bones-Based on the Temperance Brennan books by real life forensic anthropologist, Kathy Reichs.

True Blood-Based on the Southern Vampire Mysteries books by Charlaine Harris

Dexter-Based on the novels by Jeff Lindsay.

Legend of The Seeker-based on The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind

Gossip Girl—Based on the Cecily von Ziegesar series of the same name.

Boardwalk Empire (2009)- Upcoming HBO project helmed by none other than Martin Scorsese; based on the Nelson Johnson book, “Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City”

The Unit-based on the book Inside Delta Force by Eric Haney.

Older shows:

Women's Murder Club: based on the James Patterson series of the same name.

Roswell-Based on the series, Roswell High by Melinda Metz.

Band of Brothers-Based on the non fiction book Band of Brothers: E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne from Normandy to Hitler's Eagle's Nest by Stephen E Ambrose.

John Adams-Based on the biography of the same name by David McCulloug.

Roots-Based on Alex Haley's Roots: The Saga of an American Family.

Homicide: Life on the Street-Based on David Simon's non-fiction book Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets.

The Dresden Files-Based on the series by Jim Butcher.

The Barchester Chronicles-Based on the books by Anthony Trollope.

So the next time your stranded without a TV, ipod, or computer, why not check out the library or nearest bookstore? Think about it, no commercials, no TiVoing for a more convenient time...sounds pretty good to me!
